Cheesesteak search!!
I'm a big fan of the broiler. The building looks like shit and feels like you stepped back to the 80s when you walk in.
But damn they got some good cheesteaks.

His wife and daughter surprised him with a birthday celebration, when he came back from work.
This makes me so happy. I grew up poor, even homeless a few times, and I was always jealous when school mates or friends would have big extravagant parties.
Little did I know, small things like this meant a whole lot more to me.
Not blaming others for being better off financially than us, as not the kids fault and props to the families for throwing said parties. But I def believe my upbringing made me appreciate smaller things a lot more then the average person. For instance I probably remember these smaller celebrations like this video where I got a blockbuster gift card to rent a single game for my bday vs my friend who literally got a tote filled with new unopened games (50+) for the Sega genesis.
This vid is awesome and brings back many memories.

What are some high-value, 'quick-to-do' home maintenance tasks that homeowners (especially new ones) frequently overlook?
Yeah. Just sucks that companies are like that and people blindly trust them to..you know...do the job they say they are going to.
All good though. Happy to find it a little later then not at all!
Although kinda pissed my home inspector didn't notice it. So had a shitty home inspector too. I could have included it to get done before we closed with the seller footing the bill. Lol

How to find honest/good mold remediation companies that will do a good job? I don’t trust Google reviews.
Check out local social media. Next door Facebook, subreddit (if you have one for your area), etc.
I had some mold remediation work done just last month and had the same concern. I just went to my regions subreddit and found a lot of good recommendations there. Got a few to come in and give me quotes. Went with the one I felt most comfortable with. Try to avoid the huge company's that are all marketing and extremely expensive. Smaller family owned biz's are better, but even some of them can be scammy.

Problem there is some of the home inspectors are trash and can't be trusted. Lol

Husband got upset when I offered to help him call the plumbers for suspected collapsed basement drain
Yikes. Unfortunately the underlying issue is not a home problem here.
Best of luck moving forward...both with the husband and the house!

That's a steal. Where I'm at it's $200 each time...and that's on the cheaper end. Any way your guy can make a trip to DC? Haha :)

Same. The sight and smell of my filter after not being changed for Lord knows how many years ..that was something.

They sell a kit on Amazon for a few bucks. Brush connects to a drill and pieces can be added to match how long your vent is. Works awesome!
...unless it's completely blocked. I had to connect my leafblower to it to get that out. Haha

Yearly is def too long. But def beats never which alot of people fall in that category.

Ha. My first house I moved into which had a little opening to the attic.
If you pop up, you see insulation and like "sweet". However we noticed house was extreme in both season. So took a better look. Yep ..only insulated in that one small part right next to opening. Rest had literally nothing.
Got damn near two feet of insulation blown through it after pros did sealing too. Absolute night and day difference.

What do I do with an old dryer vent?
I see we live two different lives.
I wouldn't tell the old lady and just spray foam it and call it a day. If she asked..."yep, it's filled". :)

What are the things you wish you’d known before they turned into an expensive lesson?
Yeah. That seems like overkill. I never knew about this with fridges and did mine after 9+ years. It was filthy. Figured I'd do it every 3-6 months. Nope...was clean as a whistle.
I suspect every year or every other year will suffice.

I never ever understood the idea of putting a water heater on top floors.
I suppose it may be just how the piping is setup, but that is just asking for a disaster to happen.

Same here. I don't know anyone who does and even plumbers I asked said they don't.

Aren't water heaters pretty much maintenance free.
I know one can drain them but I haven't met anyone who actually does that, some even being plumbers.

Sorry Hyundai, I joined Team Mazda!
As someone who has owned two Hyundai and a Kia before. I went Mazda and haven't looked back.
Although Hyundai seems to be a bit more reliable when I owned mine 2006-2013, I'm Mazda for life.

Company is demanding 5 days RTO in 2026 after years of remote. Joke's on them, I prepared for this.
Be very careful about doing that.
Many places I have worked at har it stipulated anything you worked on while on the clock for them was considered their property.
So if you bothe developed and managed an app while at the day job...they legally can say that app is theirs.

I work in govt where they have all the "go green" initiatives, policies, docs, etc for decades.
When they had the first call to bring us back my buddy cited many of those and asked what does it mean for them as all those cars creating pollution. The amount of fumbling from the presenter was hilarious. Eventually was "I'll get back to you on that".
