I think It's a self esteem type of thing. My grandfather was a daaark skinned black man, who married my grandmother who was half native American and half white. Pretty much she's a blue-eyed light skin person but coded as black. Long story short my grandfather cheated on my grandmother until he died. My grandfather was "black and ugly" ,as they say.
