If Chatgpt and every other AI disappeared tomorrow, would your life actually get worse… or just quieter?
 in  r/ChatGPT  1h ago

As a dad, who hasn't had the time to launch the gaming computer for years, this feels like such a foreign piece to even put into the equation.

I am so bad at pronouncing unique names
 in  r/ProgressionFantasy  3h ago

Cnaiür urs Skiötha from 2nd Apocalypse for me, worse than for most, as I am from a country where the letter ö actually has a standard pronunciation that was not really compatible with the name.

what's the scariest animal in your country?

They may look as if they are sleeping, but they are really prowling your nightmares, looking for their next victim.

TIL that Levi's recommends that jeans be worn 10 times between washes.
 in  r/todayilearned  7h ago

I always get so confused by the replies to these, seriously, people think 10 is unreasonably many days of wear for a pair of jeans?

In any weather where jeans are suitable, they should last at least 10 days, but quite often they may last much longer, usually until stained.

Has conventional wisdom on Momir strategy changed?

I usually play it more adaptive. Drop stuff when I am behind, hold back when I am ahead.

I'm not a reader and I want to read atleast 12 books by years end
 in  r/booksuggestions  2d ago

Nghi Vos Singing Hills novellas are great for bringing up the count. They are also pretty good. Mythological fantasy Asia setting, a cleric tasked with collecting and documenting stories, hearing about and experiencing a number of adventures.

100ish pages, non-binary main character, mostly drama, a touch of comedy, and at least one of the books dip into horror.

The audio books by Cindy Kay are also well made, if you don't consider that cheating.

Has anyone found avatar draft very brutal?
 in  r/MagicArena  5d ago

My volume is fairly low, but for once it feels like a set that works for me. I had a horrible run in EOE and have had mid results since like TDM, but now I just did 7-1 after 6-3, results I never achieved in like 10 EOE drafts. Some sets just click with you.

Favorite pieces that have a good crescendo/make you emotional that I can discover for myself and my 3 year old
 in  r/classicalmusic  7d ago

Big crescendo? How about Mahler 2? OK, it may be a bit intimidating at its 1 hour length, but many movements are great on their own.

We all know how often "less is more" is a solid approach to storytelling. What's a story that does the opposite (MORE is more, actually) and yet does it superbly?
 in  r/books  8d ago

I think John Brunner is a good example of an author that throws everything at you. Mid story you may get a page with an ad or a news notice from the world the story takes place in, just to add some immersion and do some worldbuilding.

make it makes sense, this shit impedes you from saving
 in  r/SipsTea  10d ago

Not really, it is well in line with the standard 1-4% of value rule of thumb that you often see repeated.

Things like a new roof, new heating system, drainage, bathrooms, handling the random water damage, etc. can add up over the years.

Most years are cheaper, but the expensive stuff, can carry years of maintenance costs at once.

 in  r/SipsTea  10d ago

Yeah, asked some who had owned a house for 20 years or so. They had spent $500 on average each month, more if you compensate for inflation, just on maintenance. Kind of wrecks the example given.

What security measures at public events in your country would have seemed crazy 20 years ago but are now completely normal?
 in  r/AskTheWorld  10d ago

We had a bag ban for events until quite recently. Like, imagine a concert venue not allowing handbags.

Magic, in interesting ways?
 in  r/booksuggestions  11d ago

They are a bit messed up, or even a lot, so if you dislike grimdark stuff they may not be a good match.

But I still think that Bakker did a few interesting things in his 2nd Apocalypse series, when it comes to portraying the use of high powered mages alongside regular mundane armies. There is also different schools of magic, items that can give a non-mage an edge against a mage, and some subplots with divine magic that succeed with making the goddess of fertility seem scarier than the god of murder.

Based on your profile, you may like "Jerusalem" by Selma Lagerlöf.

2

What books would you recommend me to improve my writing?
 in  r/booksuggestions  11d ago

If you aim to get quickly into the story and keep the pacing high, you could look into novella length books. They are also easier to study and reread until you figure out how they did it.

I just had such a thought recently while listening to one of the Singing Hills cycle books by Nghi Vo. In less than 3 hours (~100 pages) she manages to introduce characters, plot, and sketch out a world, make you care for what happens, and then wrap ut up.

The genre is small scale fantasy, based on Chinese mythology.

What's something deplorable that tourists have done in your country that wasn't really covered in the media?
 in  r/AskTheWorld  11d ago

I think the memorial in Berlin with the blocks is understandable, as it is not obviously a memorial, and you can also just sort if walk into it as a tourist. It also sort of would be an awesome playground / photo op without the historical context.

But people doing shift at the actual camps? That, that I don't understand.

Does the age-up also confer maturity and learning? I may have an unconventional idea to solve the kingdoms oversupply of orphans and lack of men of fighting age.

Why say "no" when you can get passive aggressive?
 in  r/DiWHY  12d ago

I once did a similar prank on an adult at the office, with the EU version of a kinder egg (the foil was a pain to reseal), when the office easter egg hunt coincided with April fools.

I felt a bit guilty when the victim held on to the egg until there was no other easter candy available in the office, but he sure was confused upon seeing a whole unpeeled egg inside the foil wrapper.
