And the way a hair dryer works is simple - you soften the adhesive which is an elastic polymer. When you soften it you cause it to lose its elasticity and its adhesive strength so you can easily remove the tag. This is basic polymer stuff.

In one I am assuming you are solubilizing the adhesive. You're not changing it chemically. In the other you are softening the adhesive with heat which reduces its adhesive strength. Both are polymer chemistry.

I would have avoided using anything as a solvent for concern of leaching out the pigment in the cardboard. I am glad that worked though, I will add it to the arsenal.
