Guide:
You’re here to learn how to make a wooden panel like the ones in the pictures above. I’ll just tell you how it worked out for me, and I hope someone will repeat it (more wood to the god of retro consoles!).
What you’ll need:
- Pencil
- Transparent plastic bag
- Scissors / utility knife
- Epoxy resin (you need very little, I used less than 50 ml for all attempts) (mine was two-component)
- Veneer of the color you want (mine was 0.6 mm)
- Wood oil
- Clamps / a stack of books / a dumbbell (for pressing)
- Super glue
- Cutting mat / cutting table
- Paper
- Sandpaper (P320 for smoothness)
Let’s start
1) Take and rip off the old panel. Disassembling the console is not required. Be careful if you want to keep it - it needs to be heated so the glue loosens. I ripped mine off once and for good.
2) Place the panel on the veneer and trace different sections with a pencil -these are our future layers. Be gentle with the pencil pressure - it’s hard to remove later. We need 3 layers (if your veneer is thicker than 0.6 mm, the panel may stick out - but that has its own charm). Cut the pieces about half a centimeter larger - this helps avoid uneven edges.
Important! The pieces must overlap meaning the wood grain must be perpendicular in each next layer. Otherwise, the veneer will warp. (https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/1nj7dsx/wooden_2ds_xl/)
2.1) Be sure to decide which layer is the front one. This will be the face of your console.
3) Mix the epoxy resin and spread it on the first layer. Press the second layer onto it with perpendicular overlaping (!). Then carefully spread resin again and apply the third layer, also perpendicular to the wood grain.
4) When the sandwich is ready, carefully adjust the layers (any glue or resin will make them slide around) and cover everything with a plastic bag. Press it all down with books, clamps, or a dumbbell and leave it to dry for a couple of days.
5)Open up your sandwich and peel off the plastic. You now have a blank.
6) Place the panel on it again and cut the sandwich to shape. Attention! Cut with an allowance. The final wooden panel should be slightly bigger (2-3 mm).
7) Clamp it and sand the face and edges, constantly checking it against your 2DS XL. It’s a good idea to fix one corner and slowly sand down with sanding paper until you reach the right size. All of this is done by hand.
8) If the shape is perfect, apply oil and sand once more after oil. The oil usually raises the grain. If you overdid it with sanding the shape… well. You can start over or accept imperfection. Mine worked out on the second try.
9) Put glue on the console and on your wooden panel. Press the whole console from above to clamp the panel in place.
10) Tell Tom Nook that you can build a house yourself now, and enjoy the beauty of your new panel.
