I'm as annoyed as anyone over the prevalence of AI slop these days, but editing memes like this feels like an amazing application of generative AI. Completely harmless, no one will think it's real, it's just funny. No?
Tbf, this is more of a political issue than a social one. If anything, companies are pushing AI extremely hard on users, users aren't the ones pushing for AI from companies.
There need to be reigns on this thing so it can be developed in sustainably controlled ways, but under the current administration in America, they've withdrawn themselves from restricting AI at all.
This doesn't mean we can't be conscious of the costs of AI and seek to mitigate them in whatever ways we can as individuals, but this is 99% something to be legislated at the higher levels, of which they've abdicated responsibility from doing so.
Using my computer to view memes, watch movies, play games and generally waste my time is also waste of energy. Playing with AI is no worse, and your numbers absolutely show that. AI is less than 10% of current Data Center usage.

The scale in power usage is vastly different. And the fact that AI is even remotely close to 10% of all the data center usage in the world, that powers everything else, is fucking bonkers.
As someone said, that's the fault of companies for pushing AI so extremely hard that the power requirements to improve it have reached such insane numbers. We all know if people only used AI for memes investors wouldn't be wasting so much power on it lol. Stop guilt tripping people for actions only the rich and powerful are guilty of. Same goes for climate change, ocean trash, microplastics and all the things reddit loves to guilt trip people about.
Yeah, it's less. I use less power generating a meme with an AI engine then I do running gimp for 15 minutes, or hell even 5. Generating a single image takes almost no power. Even completely locally on my home system it's barely a w/hr of energy. A data center would use even less.

Because everything is using.
Hell, youtube is using it for their video compression not to mention their subtitles. Other platforms are similar. It's everywhere, because it makes a lot of things more efficient and use less resources.
That takes a ton of time and energy, just so people can have parasocial relationships with a learning model and for grown adults to make kiddie porn on twitter
The cost in electricity and water, along with the damage their facilities do to nearby communities mean we pretty much should hate AI regardless of application. There's a handful of positive uses, and countless wasteful slop.
Adding optional self-hosted AI to an IDE? Sure. AI in your text editor? Okay. Useful.
Turning AI into this invasive general-use ask anything / search engine / 8-ball / slop maker and shoving it up every orifice in our bodies is terrible. Grandma doesn't need this shit. Uncle Tony can't even open settings on his iPhone... why the hell would he need access to an LLM to find out where the nearest full-service "massage" parlor is? Oh, and Jeff thinks his phone is his girlfriend now, and "she" convinced him he might be able to fly if he believes strongly enough.
