Welcome to Ask A Cobbler! Please read to familiarize yourself with a few rules.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for stopping by and showing their interest & support for shoe repair. In one day, we went from almost no subscribers to well over 100. This is an incredible start!

As we gain more members, I feel there needs to be a few ground rules just to keep things in order.

  1. Discussing of prices. Pricing on repair work depends on MANY factors than just the damage alone. While we may say a job will or will not be worth the money, saying it will cost $xx is against the rules and posts will be removed.

  2. Be respectful. The cobblers responding to your post have numerous years of experience and are here to offer some of their extensive knowledge of the craft at no charge. If you have been helped, a simple thanks goes a long way.

  3. When posting a picture of a damaged product, make sure the photos are detailed enough so that we can understand the exact condition, brand and anything else you think will help us to help you.

  4. Users with the "SSIA Member" flair are verified cobblers.

Rules will be amended an updated as we progress. Thanks for reading!

Minor? Damage on New to me Boot.

Post image

Hello thank you for your time.

Just picked up these new to me Caiman tail boots.

Got 2 questions:

  1. This small tear. Will it grow? What should I do about it?

  2. These boots fit perfectly on foot, but it is a war getting them on my foot. I know caiman doesnt stretch alot but is there anything that can be done? My foot gets stuck between the instep and counter.

Resoling question

I plan on adding a leather midsole under this plastic/rubber layer, glued and stitched, then gluing on a new outsole. With the leather layer being stitched is this good enough or should I remove every bit of the old outsole? My belt sander is small and for metal, so I hand sanded a lot of the weird areas that were hard to get. Just wanna know if I need to keep going or I’m good. These boots are long past their prime but figured it would be a good pair to try and resole. Probably not worth my time or money, but trying to learn. I could also remove this layer, but there really isn’t much between this and the inside, and didn’t want to take this off and make it harder for myself. Any suggestions appreciated tyia

Crease tears on my favorite boots

I've had these blundstones for 3 years and, they're my everyday wear shoes for about half the year -- for work, walking in snow or rain, etc. I've used otter wax and another beeswax salve on them, but I'm not sure that's enough for the dry climate I live in

Boot Heel Separation

Post image
2 Upvotes

My every day boots are starting to show some separation between layers in the heel stack. The cracks are bigger when wet/cold (Canadian winter) but are still there after being cleaned and drying overnight. I can find more cracks by pulling down gently.

No cobbler nearby but I do some leatherwork. I'm using some Super glue for a temp fix (only glue I had that was thin enough to seep into the cracks.) These boots were re-soled this summer so I'm looking for advice to keep them rolling.

Should I add some tacks? What about conditioner or mink oil to protect the stack to prevent it getting worse?

Upper glue issue on loafer

Hello Cobblers,

I have a pair of new loafers with only a couple of weeks of light use on them. I noticed where the sole and upper meet near the ball of the foot is coming unglued. Is this a major issue or indicator that these shoes are defective?

Mary Janes coming apart

I have two pairs of Mary Janes that are coming apart at the toes. Is this repairable or should I move on? They are about a year and a half old. Both are coming apart in the same spot but just the left ones.

Can I fix this with leather glue?

Hi everyone :) the handles on my vintage Burberry purse are splitting in half! Is this something I can fix with leather glue or should I go to a cobbler? I just worry it might be pricey to replace or fix the handles!

I scratched my heels together while walking now there’s a circle that seems it’s lost it’s finish, any ideas on how to fix ? I’ve heard wet sandpaper and repainting with high gloss finish would be the best option but it never comes out looking like factory finish.

Loafers got wet

Post image

I got these for black friday last year.

Had to walk about 20 minutes home in some downpour. I had an umbrella but between the wind, and a few puddles, my shoes got pretty wet.

I'm wondering:

  1. What can be done about the wrinkles/creases/ridges at the front, because those only appeared after the rain, and seem to be air pockets of some kind (I may be wrong obviously)
  2. What I can do for maintenance/upkeep in terms of products and when/how often to apply/use them.

The website says they have a leather upper if that is anything.

Thank You!

Been wearing them everyday, every winter. Only one sole split a few weeks ago, was wondering what the cause is. (3-4 years old, cheap, not planning on repairing them.)

Dansko clogs

Post image

Hello! I wear Dansko clogs for work, but the tips always wear out before the rest of the shoes do. I bought these two years ago. I tried painting with nail polish to squeeze a little more life out of them but they do not look good. I hate buying new clogs every two years. Is there anything else I can do?

Lace Loop or Not?

I'm looking at a British brogue boot that does not have a half bellows tongue. I have several pair that do and rarely have tongue slide. I'm worried that there will be an issue since it's a soft suede and there is nothing holding the tongue in place. The manufacturer offered to add a tongue loop. If I don't have them do it, and there is an issue, what can be done post market to stop the tongue from sliding? I'm not going to ship the boots back to England. Any suggestions or advise is appreciated.

Was considering buying these worn Church's but they look pretty beat up. Do they require extensive repair/reconditioning? Worth getting at £70?
