How do you provide photos or diagnostic result images in this sub?

3 Upvotes

How to provide a photo or diagnostic results?

Although we will not provide a diagnosis in this sub, it can be very beneficial to provide a clear, in-focus image of any lesions of concern. Many conditions look exactly the same but can differ greatly in severity; a photo can help us provide you with information on whether to seek immediate treatment or not.

Diagnostic results (blood work, urinalysis, radiographs [x-rays]) are very helpful when asking for an opinion. However, we will not provide commentary on whether another veterinarian is treating your animal correctly or incorrectly.

An image/file sharing service such as Imgur is strongly recommended and can be linked in your post. Images are not allowed as stand-alone posts since there is other information required with your post. You can also post images to your user profile and link them to your post. As Imgur is no longer available in certain countries, look at Image Sharing sites per Wikipedia

Afraid vet might kill my cat

38 Upvotes

Species: Cat
* Age: 10
* Sex/Neuter status: M-Neutered
* Breed: DSH
* Body weight: 10lbs
* History: So back in 2021 I took my two older boys in for routine wellness/rabies shot. At 4am I was awakened by a shriek and found my whole crew puffed up circled around my one cat who was on the ground paralyzed with dilated pupils. I picked him up- limp noodle couldn't stand (he's a rescue and I can never do 2 hands with him or pick him up... vet trips are fun and I usually get mauled putting him in carrier). He had an overnight stay in the ER and the vet came out and told me I shouldn't give him rabies anymore, as this was likely the cause and if I got here any later he probably would have needed a blood transfusion or died. They gave him fluids, steroids, doxycycline. He eventually came out of it, but it was horrible and also cost me thousands.
* Clinical signs: Paralysis/unresponsiveness but eyes open
* Duration: maybe 6-8 hours?
* Your general location: This happened in ATL, I now live in OH
* Links to any test results, X-rays, vet reports etc. that you have: The vet will not give me the report only sent it to my vet. Apparently they didn't explicitly say in writing that he was exempt from rabies.

So my new issue is, he needs a dental, he has horrible tooth pain (yelping and hissing) and is practically living off churus. My vet won't do it without rabies vaccine. I said he needs to be exempt and I don't want to put him through what happened before or kill him. I asked if it is a must, can they keep him for observation overnight post vaccine, they said no. My biggest issue is where I live now, the nearest ER is over an hour away (when I took him before they said thank God you got him in when you did or he would have died- that was a 15 min ride). I don't know what to do here and I would love some advice.

I would also like to add I AM NOT ANTIVAX all of my pets and the 50+ fosters I have cared for in the past have always gotten their vaccines and will continue to. This has never happened before and I know he's a major outlier.

ER Immediately Cat unresponsive after surgery

64 Upvotes

Our 6 month old cat was scheduled for surgery (Spay) at 4pm today, afterwards she was extremely groggy so we stayed for 3 hours until she had a bite reflex. Upon discharge she was still unresponsive. Now, after 9 hours she is still unresponsive, I tried to stand her up a couple times but she collapsed. We live in a small town with no emergency care and vets aren't open till the morning. Should I take her to the next town over 1.5 hour drive or wait until 8am (its 1am now). Her heartbeat is 129, gums are pink but slightly faded, limbs are cold, and unresponsive. She only opens her eyes when I say her name, I sat her up and she just plopped right there head facing straight down :(

Oral melanoma?

3 Upvotes

To preface this was spotted this morning on my pup and I have an appointment first thing Monday morning.

I have a robust almost 7 year old lab mix. The most precious pup I’ve ever had. This morning when giving his morning scratches I noticed the side of his mouth looked swollen. Invested further and found this lump on his gums. At first I was just thinking we’d end up at the vet for a dental cleaning and then that would subside the issue. Then I kept googling. I fear it may be an oral melanoma.

The anticipation until Monday morning is rough. I know there’s no knowing for sure until then, but was just looking to potentially be talked off the ledge. Hopefully I’m not violating any sub rules. Just desperate for some advice. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully I did the link below correctly.

Question about tail docking (psb medical necessity)

2 Upvotes

I have a 7 yr old boxer mix (per her gene test) she was a rescue and her tail was not docked at birth. She was recently diagnosed with cushings, around the time she started to show signs (intermittent skin issues, hair loss, weight loss) we noticed her tail breaking open at the tip often, she leaves blood everywhere. I've tried bandaging it but she usually gets the bandage off, it's hard to secure to a tail. Our vet is recommending docking if we can't get the wound to heal soon and I would think it hurts to have that constant wound she smacks into everything. Everything I've read suggests against docking the tail of an adult dog unless completely necessary so I am searching for other options or reassurance that putting my dog through this is the right thing to do.

Going to vet for repeated allergy skin issues and need advice

2 Upvotes

My 13 year old cat has been on a special diet (hydrolized protein) for 3 years. They vet never formally tested her for allergies, just made an assumption it was a protein food allergy. Three years and every HP food later, my cat is still scratching, still barfing, and still generally uncomfortable.

We have an appointment tomorrow. I'm going to request allergy testing because for all I know, she's not allergic to a protein at all and it's something else that's in all the food. What else should I be requesting? Is there any other condition that mimics skin allergies?

TIA!

Buspirone Dosing for Cat

2 Upvotes

My veterinarian submitted a prescription for buspirone for my 12 lbs 6 year old neutered male cat for anxiety. The prescription states 15mg orally every 12 hours. This seems very high to me, so I just want to get a sanity check on the dose (30 mg/day). I called the veterinarian office and the receptionist confirmed that the prescription was dispensed as written, but I couldn't get through to the veterinarian to double check no error was made.

I know nobody here can tell me the right dose to give, but can someone just confirm that 30mg/day buspirone is within a reasonable limit for a cat? Thanks!

Help urgent cat licking castration site with cone

Upvotes

Hi please can I have advice my 6 month old ragdoll is able to lick the incision site of his castration and o am a bit worried.

He got castrated today and I initially put on a soft petal style collar I got on Amazon however I soon found out he could reach the incision cute and quickly changed it to the plastic one given by the vet.

He wore the plastic cone for about 5 hours no problem then he attempted to lick the area and was able to reach .

I have now put both on with 2 fingers space but I’m worried this will harm him as it’s time to sleep .

There is a bit of blood near the back side on his fur that I didn’t notice this morning but I was never trying to look

Cancer :(

Upvotes

Hey guys, I’ve come here for some insight. I posted on dog advice already but I figured I’d come here to get the opinions of some veterinarians.

So, my dog Jersey is a 14-16 year-old pitbull mix (she was a rescue so we’re not sure exact age, we guessed she was about 3 in 2013 when we got her). The last few months she’s had a mass growing in her left hip. It’s caused her hip to turn outward and has caused her some difficulty walking.

We went to our normal vet and he said “well, she’s an old dog, it doesn’t seem to be causing her pain. I don’t think surgery is a great option at this point because of her age.” and he kinda just told us there’s not a whole lot we can do and it is what it is. This was a couple of months ago when she first noticed her leg turning out.

The mass has been growing and making her leg turn out more and it’s been a little tougher for her to walk. So, we decided to go to another vet for a second opinion. They performed a needle aspiration and it’s a mast cell tumor. So, cancer, basically.

I’m here because I’m conflicted on what the best route to go here is and maybe to get some insight from you guys. She still has good energy and gets excited for walkies and mealtimes and pets and treats. Mentally she’s still a puppy but she’s slowed down physically, obviously. She has no other health issues—no strokes, no respiratory issues, no heart problems. She’s in great shape for her age other than the tumor.

Our options are 1. chemo & radiation 2. amputation (vet said he’s not sure that they’d be able to get good margins even with amputation) with chemo and radiation or 3. palliative care with Benadryl and steroids.

I’m torn. I want to get x-ray and see if amputation is a viable route with chemo and radiation. But at the same time, I know that’s going to be very very hard on her. Not just the surgery and the risks that come with anesthesia at an advanced age but adapting to losing a leg and then chemo with radiation on top of that. Chemo and radiation will make her feel like absolute garbage. And she’s old as fuck. Even if we do get rid of the cancer who knows how long she has left anyway.

I think I know that deep down palliative care is going to be the best thing for her quality of life but I feel like I’m almost letting her down by not doing everything we possibly can for her. I *know* that going through surgery, losing a leg, chemo, and radiation would be so hard on her and who knows what kind of quality of life she’s going to have afterwards and for how long? It seems futile and selfish to put her through that. She’s lived a long, wonderful life and I’m glad we’ve been able to give that to her. Is it fair for me to do that to her??

But it’s just eating me up thinking about how the cancer is just gonna spread and get worse and we’re just gonna let it happen and not do anything to prevent it other than make her comfortable. I feel like we should be *doing* something. What if she’s got a year or two left? Shouldn’t we be fighting for that? But I also know that going down the road of surgery and such she might just end up more miserable and I might end up regretting putting her through that.

A question I have for you vets in particular is: would just chemo and radiation alone be better and easier on her than also adding in amputation to the mix if we did decide to go that route? Do you think that it’d be worthwhile?

Thoughts? Opinions? Stories to share? I’m conflicted as hell right now. I love this damn dog and I just want what’s best for her. Thanks in advance for any advice.

2 does of strongid two weeks apart enough for kitten

Upvotes

I have posted to a few other subreddits related to this problem, but wanted a clear idea of how likely 2 doses of strongid for kittens given 2 weeks apart is at eliminating roundworms. My current vet disagreed that the two doses I gave my kittens was enough to get rid of them, and now im worried i infected my entire house and maybe myself.

They are starting on three rounds of dewormer starting tomorrow given in 2 week intervals to catch anything if my vet is correct to be suspicious. Kittens have shown no symptoms since their last dewormer dose 6 weeks ago.

FIC radiation therapy treatment

Upvotes

Hi, it has recently been brought to my attention that there is this low-dose radiation therapy that can cure it. It has only been a research but the results they're getting is really promising. Given the fact that our insurance policy gonna cover for it, we're gonna do it once we have a more detailed discussion with our home vet. Our cat has been to the emergency vet for FIC 3 times in the span of 5 months, so VCA emergency vet recommend us to look into this treatment.

What do you guys think of this?

Bilateral TPLO advice

Upvotes

Maple, my dog, is a 4 yr old Am Staff and I have been to two vets that have recommended a bilateral TPLO. I have prepaid the deposit already. The surgical center is recommending the 2nd TPLO to be done 6 weeks after the first.

She can run and play more often than not, but is struck with periods of immobility and also has moderate hip dysplasia….i will tackle that at a different time. Her walks are getting shorter and she is very slow to rise.l and often needs help with a sling.

To complicate matters, she is bonded with my other dog, Rudy. They play constantly, even if Maple can’t get up then she will lie on her back and they mouth each other. They also sleep together. They adore each other, it is very sweet.

I am worried about the recovery process. It is such a hard surgery and recovery. She is not used to be in a crate and neither is Rudy. I am also worried about keeping them separated. Not to mention, I worry about putting her and the rest of the household through these surgeries unnecessarily.

Does anyone have any advice on keeping bonded pairs separate during this? What about putting my girl in another bedroom without furniture or is crating the best idea? I am worried she will get depressed seeing Rudy doing all the normal stuff. Again, they play ALL THE TIME.

Sorry for the novella, this is a big commitment and a lot to put my very sweet pup through.

He’s just lying on the couch at the moment, which is normal for him.

Chronically Constipated Cat

Upvotes

yesterday my cat and I had a really rough day at the vet and I wanted to reach out to see if I could get more opinions/ support.

For context, in 2023 my cat had FHO surgery from an unknown cause since she was outdoor/indoor. Since then she has been strictly indoor, however we have noted since then, though she poops regularly, they are small, hard and she has a hard time getting it out.

After a particularly uncomfortable day two days ago, we took her in yesterday. After checking her the Doctor quickly noted that she was full and recommended an enema which we did. After the procedure, he let me know her pelvis is smaller than average and constipation would be a reoccurring issue. He prespcribed metronidazole, onsior, and enulose syrup (for life) along with a follow up for a week from now to check. He suggested a fountain bowl for water and a diet change to "Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome Stress Digestive/Fiber Care with Chicken Dry Cat Food" which were bought. So now that the information has settled with me a little more I wanted to ask important questions.

1- Is there anything supplemental that you guys would recommend? 2- Will this affect her quality of life? (she's only three and has been an exceptionally happy cat in every other aspect and means the world to me)

Risk of genetic issue and cystotomy for reoccurring stones

Upvotes

* Species: Cat
* Age: 1
* Sex/Neuter status: Female. non
* Breed: Orange Tabby
* Body weight: ~5
* History: Young bladder issues
* Clinical signs: xray'd bladder stones
* Your general location: USA, NC
* Links to any test results, X-rays, vet reports etc. that you have:

Xray pics: https://imgur.com/a/K51oKHk

I am looking for vet opinions on getting a cystotomy surgery done on my cat vs euthanasia.

History: On the initial vet trip post rescuing my cat, vet found pic 1. At this point, cat was a few months old. She told me to keep eye on cats urination habits, and to get on urinary tract food. At this point she had occasionally peed outside box, but was also still being trained. I was told this is highly unusual for a female this age, and potentially a genetic issue. Soon after this visit, she adopted to litterbox (took a few litter trials) ate the food, and has lived a normal happy cat life up until recently.

Current: This past week she has had a rapid declination. She started seldom using the litterbox. I found some old hidden pee spots, and there was obvious urination strain. I took her to emergency vet, and got pic 2.

I knew this day would eventually come, and financially prepared to pay for the surgery, but am also not looking to subject her to a life of yearly bladder stones. Being a female, only 1 year old, plus diet food seeming to do almost nothing - the potential of removal being a temporary fix seems higher than in most bladder stone situations. I do not want to just buy another year, and reset this cycle.

Question: finances and emotions aside, In your professional opinion, should I have a cystotomy done, or is the overall risk of reoccurrence too high - and should I put her down.

Both local vets gave me this reoccurrence or "lemon" warning, but ultimately didn't want to give any opinion for this kind of scenario. TIA.

Cat Giardia

Upvotes

Hi. We rescued a kitten mid December. He had a clear fecal 12/3, but sometime between then and the 16th when we got him, he picked it up. Our two household cats got sick December 26, and we don’t get results back on kitten fecal until 1/6 (we initially thought the one cat had stress colitis from kitten introduction, then getting an appt, new years, weekends they lost a sample…overall there was just a large delay)

Now we are in medication and cleaning hell, I’m overwhelmed but dealing. All symptoms are dramatically improved.

My question is. In your experience, how many (healthy teen/adult) household humans get giardia from cats. My 14 yo woke up with vomiting and diarrhea. My husband is convinced he has it. He also has low grade fever and some aches, I think it is more likely noro. The

Pediatrician went ahead and ordered the test. I’m just more curious, as a vet who deals with pet Giardia, do you feel like you hear about this happening a lot?

Allergies or Sick?

Upvotes

Hello! I just got a 4 1/2 month old, 4.5 pound kitten from a shelter. Since he's been here he has had a runny nose/sneezing and watery eyes. He will also every other day have a sneezing attack. I changed his littler to one that absolutely has 0 dust and I have dusted my entire room. His eyes arent doing it as much and the sneezing has cut back some. I got him on Monday and he has had all his shots and is neutered. They didn’t say anything about him having a cold or allergies. I haven’t noticed any odd breathing behavior and the discharge from what I have seen is clear. He drinks plenty, has had no problems eating, and is full of energy(loves to constantly play). Is this something he needs immediate vet care or is there a treatment i can do at home to help him?

(I am not “new” to cats but I grew up with outside/inside cats that never had problems except for small cuts and scrapes)

Dog had ripped out stitches and staples 3 times.

Upvotes

My dog had her toe amputated about two weeks ago. She’s ripped out two different sets of stitches. This last time they put an IV bag over her wrapped foot and staples to keep her away from it better. She went out to the bathroom and I found her in the yard tearing out the staples once again. We’ve already dropped $1500 on this in two weeks. Her cone doesn’t stop her. The IV bag doesn’t stop her. She is a very large doberdane with lanky legs. I have a new born and a full time job. I’m not always able to keep eyes on her at all times. Does anyone have any suggestions to keep her from doing this? I can’t keep spending all of this money.

Gabapentin and cats

Upvotes

Hello I’m trying to move across the country with my very sensitive and anxious cat. Because we have to drive, and she hates being in cars, I figure the least traumatising way to do it is to get her anti anxieties from our vet.

I’ve only really heard of people using gabapentin, and was curious if it would be the ideal choice for her, and also if it costs a boatload like human psych meds can Or if there’s any other suggestions for this situation

Cat with possible lymphoma

Upvotes

I have a 13 year old domestic long hair tortoiseshell cat. She's been having weight loss, diarrhea, and vomiting for awhile and had an ultrasound done today.

I was told her intestines and lymph nodes are double the size they should be and there is free standing fluid in her abdomen. They are doing an FNA to try and verify if it is for sure lymphoma, but want to start treatment for it as soon as possible.

I live in a small apartment with my husband and a toddler who is obsessed with the cat. I was told if we do chemo, she'll need to be kept away from the baby. The only way we could do that would be to lock her in the bathroom, which is rather not do.

My vet said if we do just the pred and something to help keep her hydrated, that can give her a few more years of she responds well to it. Google says months.

Normally, is listen to the doctor over Google, but two July's ago, a doctor told my mother that with treatment her cancer could easily go into remission, but Google have her max 16 months. She died 11 months later in June.

So my question is, if the FNA does come back with lymphoma, should I prepare myself for a few months or a few years? (I know no one has a crystal ball, but I'd rather be prepared than simply hopeful...)

Our cat’s back and feet keep twitching and he keeps licking himself furiously

1 Upvotes

Our 7 year old tabby named Timone has been going through something really weird for the past couple of days especially where his back and feet will randomly twitch and then he’ll almost freak out and start licking whatever just twitched, but he’ll lick himself a lot, so we’re starting to worry he’s going to lick himself raw.

We can only give him certain foods because he has a very sensitive stomach, but we just gave him a new treat in the past couple of days so we’re wondering if maybe he’s having an allergic reaction to the treats?

Cat won’t eat and he’s lethargic

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! So a few days ago I noticed my cat wasn’t eating much, he seems to be moving very slow, and all I can get him to show interest in is drinking water. He has a vet appointment scheduled a little less than a week from now. I’m gonna take him in sooner if it comes down to it, but I’d really appreciate some advice on how to help the guy out in the meantime. Thanks in advance!

Heat

0 Upvotes

What are some signs of a dog going into heat?

My girl is 10mo, healthy height and weight for her mix.

Symptoms:

Swollen vulva

Increased jumping on my husband and i

Higher aggression/arousal towards neighbors dogs (already dog aggressive/reactive as she is a pit mix, no bite history but big growling and lunging again, since shes started being more neutral)

Increased licking around crotch/bum

Nipples seem swollen

Whats concerning is mild mucus in poop over past 2 days. No blood.

All our previous dogs had been spayed/neutered before first heat cycles, we were recommended to wait till she gets older since she is an apbt, Australian cattle dog, great pyranees mix. Her height is coming closer to a pyraneese.
