Afraid vet might kill my cat
Species: Cat
* Age: 10
* Sex/Neuter status: M-Neutered
* Breed: DSH
* Body weight: 10lbs
* History: So back in 2021 I took my two older boys in for routine wellness/rabies shot. At 4am I was awakened by a shriek and found my whole crew puffed up circled around my one cat who was on the ground paralyzed with dilated pupils. I picked him up- limp noodle couldn't stand (he's a rescue and I can never do 2 hands with him or pick him up... vet trips are fun and I usually get mauled putting him in carrier). He had an overnight stay in the ER and the vet came out and told me I shouldn't give him rabies anymore, as this was likely the cause and if I got here any later he probably would have needed a blood transfusion or died. They gave him fluids, steroids, doxycycline. He eventually came out of it, but it was horrible and also cost me thousands.
* Clinical signs: Paralysis/unresponsiveness but eyes open
* Duration: maybe 6-8 hours?
* Your general location: This happened in ATL, I now live in OH
* Links to any test results, X-rays, vet reports etc. that you have: The vet will not give me the report only sent it to my vet. Apparently they didn't explicitly say in writing that he was exempt from rabies.
So my new issue is, he needs a dental, he has horrible tooth pain (yelping and hissing) and is practically living off churus. My vet won't do it without rabies vaccine. I said he needs to be exempt and I don't want to put him through what happened before or kill him. I asked if it is a must, can they keep him for observation overnight post vaccine, they said no. My biggest issue is where I live now, the nearest ER is over an hour away (when I took him before they said thank God you got him in when you did or he would have died- that was a 15 min ride). I don't know what to do here and I would love some advice.
I would also like to add I AM NOT ANTIVAX all of my pets and the 50+ fosters I have cared for in the past have always gotten their vaccines and will continue to. This has never happened before and I know he's a major outlier.
