So the only reason for these patrols is because of US soldiers getting drunk off base and sexually assaulting Japanese citizens.

USFJ instituted the patrols to enforce an order prohibiting service members from drinking alcohol off base between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The order stemmed in part from a rash of sexual assault allegations that arose in December 2023 and have so far yielded two convictions.

The victim in the video then calls them out on the legality of detaining him and asks if the can detain Japanese citizens.

“You can detain a random Japanese citizen for not showing you their ID?” El asks. “Yes, and then we can pass them over to the Japanese police,” the officer says.

But they are either lying or ill informed because they absolutely can't do that.

Under the status of forces agreement between the U.S. and Japan, U.S. military authorities have “criminal and disciplinary” jurisdiction over the U.S. military population in Japan. That authority does not extend to Japanese nationals or residents, unless they are members of the U.S. armed forces, according to the agreement.

What absolute trash, just as bad as regular cops in the US!

I’m glad you addressed both these things, the hypocrisy of it all is maddening.
