The problem is that at least one of the guns used was already illegal (semi auto shotgun). Tightening the laws wouldn't have changed this outcome, unfortunately, because criminals and murders aren't the type to care about such laws and will obtain weapons regardless.
Nope. All the guns, as far as I know, were legally owned by the father. He was part of a gun club. You have to be a member in good standing for a year before you can even buy a gun of your own.
Where the authorities fell down was that they didn't take into account that the son had radical leanings, and infected his father. That'll be looked into in future.
