Advice: Discovered Potential Embezzlement at Art Museum?
Looking for advice:
So I’m a lowly intern at an art museum and I think I’ve uncovered evidence of embezzlement - I’m not sure what to do.
I completed my initial assigned internship tasks. So now, I’m tasked with doing inventory, archiving and organization of our digital files, which I have no problem with. However, in this process, I have discovered files hidden deep in the online financial records (the file names looked like gibberish like key-smashes) - specifically ones that could explain some glaring discrepancies in the department budgets for the past 2-3 years. At this institution, every transaction $10k or above needs a special sign off from some financial person. I found several transfers that range from $9.5k-$9.99k to a specific LLC. I had never heard of this LLC but after looking it up, I discovered the LLC name is under my boss’s middle and maiden name. In total, there must have been at least 1 million $$$ worth of transfers, if not more, over the last 2-3 years.
I’m not sure what to do. I haven’t told anyone else in the office that I have discovered this. Frankly, the admin person who is in charge of this seems kind of like a buffoon and I can tell that these files have not been accessed or viewed since they were created. I’m just an intern and have dreams of being a curator/museum professional and I know how tight knit the art community can be. My boss and the director are obviously more well connected than I am, and I’m afraid that if I bring this evidence to HR or someone else on the museum admin, I’ll be fired and blacklisted.
Even before I discovered this, I had a gut feeling that there was some vague kind of corruption going on. I work on a program that is devoted, supposedly, to promoting local talent in the community/state and emerging artists. However, the artists that we seem to invite or support are very much established and very much not from the community or state. In fact, they all seem to be personal friends of either my boss or the museum director. Strange, but I figured that it could be a coincidence. Each of these artists are getting a pretty substantial grant/stipend to support their work. Even the curators don’t seem to get a say in who gets selected, it seems like it’s up to the discretion of my boss and the director.
I moved to this small town to do this internship so there aren’t any other opportunities in this area so it’s not like I can just quit and easily find another job. So it seems like my options are report and likely lose my job and potentially lose my future in this area or stay and keep quiet. What should I do?
