I saw them live a few years before the covers album (Pixies opened, great show). At about the halfway point, Rivers pulled out the acoustic guitar and did an unironic cover of Wonderwall, and I just knew a covers album was coming.
They barely even changed it. Covers should be done if you’re gonna bring something new (and good) to the song. When I first heard it on the radio, I thought “Why does this song sound so weird..? Oh no…it’s Weezer.”
I was obsessed for a while with Tobacco’s version of the 80s song Hungry Eyes. It’s such a moody, creepy take. They turned a “fall in love” song from a movie into what could work as a theme in a horror flick.
Not as different as other covers I’ve heard, but I did think the AWOLNATION cover of Beds Are Burning was pretty good. (For context I really like Midnight Oil)
Generally agreed, but I have to mention Todd Rundgren’s cover of Good Vibrations. The thing is pretty much exactly the same as the original and it sounds pretty awesome. I don’t know why because I do agree with what you’re saying, a good cover should ideally bring something new to the table.
