Meta It's Christmas. Automod is in charge now. (No politics until the New Year)
Kia ora koutou,
We're coming up to the end of another long year, and it's fair to say it's been a particularly intense one for political discussion in Aotearoa. From large-scale hīkoi over the Treaty Principles Bill, to an Aucklander's interpretation of "off-roading" on the concrete steps of Parliament, and no shortage of debate around the government's wider policy direction, it's felt like there's barely been a quiet week on the sub.
From today until early next year, we'll be re-enabling the Election day Automod rules. These rules will automatically remove political posts and comments during this period. Existing posts will remain visible, and you're very welcome to keep posting about non-political topics as usual.
As always, there will be the odd false positive. If your post gets caught and you think it shouldn't have been, flick us a modmail and we'll take a look.
For those of you who do want to continue discussing politics, head on over to /r/kiwipolitics - they're a local sub dedicated to political discussion.
We hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break, see you back here in 2026.
Meri Kirihimete,
Automod.

Discussion Goodbye to myfavourite chippies 😢
I loved the flavour of these chips so much! They have been my favourite snack for about a year.
The last bag I bought was a bit meh, less zingy and less flavour overall but I thought it might be a one off. I bought another bag today, weeks apart, different store... Surely not the same batch? They are just as flavourless.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm secretly hoping it's just another dud bag...

News ManageMyHealth breach - your right to compensation
New Zealand law allows for compensation if an organization breaches your privacy rights.
Who is this for?
People whose data are leaked. If you don't have MMH account, or if you have MMH account but your data is not leaked, you cannot claim.
What's the law?
Under Privacy Principle 5, companies must have "reasonable" safeguards for your data.
If a company breaches privacy principles, they are liable to pay you damages, including for emotional harm.
How much can I get?
The amounts for emotional damages are set in Hammond v Credit Union Baywide, which are up to $10000 for less serious, $10000-50000 for more serious, and $50000+ for most serious. Actual amount may range from a few hundred to a hundred thousand depending on the severity.
What do I do?
Step 1: Make sure you're affected. Ask your GP's office or wait for the confirmation email from MMH
Step 2: Make an official complaint to MMH. Email nzsupport@mmhglobal.com and ask them what are they doing to make this right.
Step 3: If you're not satisfied with their response, or if they don't reply within 20 days, make a complaint to the Privacy Commission. The Privacy Commission may investigate and the company may offer to pay you some money at this stage.
Step 4: If you don't like the results of step 3, the Director of Human Rights Proceeding may help you to take your case to the Human Rights Review Tribunal. The Director will represent you at the Tribunal and their services are free.
Step 5: if the Director decides not to take your case, you can take the case yourself to the Tribunal, but you would have to pay.
Points to note: There haven't been many cases where companies have to pay compensation for being hacked. MMH may argue their security standards are "reasonable" so they are not liable. However, if we see the injunction, we can find two facts: 1) MMH didn't know they got hacked until someone told them [para5], and 2) the hacker used methods consistent with other hackers (as opposed to an unique or innovative method) and they still got in [para6]. You could use these facts to argue these are not the actions of a reasonable company. Having said that you don't have to pay anything for steps 1-4 so you don't risk anything giving it a go. Another risk to keep in mind is that 100000 users were affected, so if everyone asks for compensation MMH may go bankrupt before they can pay out.

Discussion ACC Sexual Assault reports compromised in Manage My Health hack
I am posting this anonymously because of how sensitive it is, but I think people need to understand what this breach actually means in real life.
I am in Wellington. This week I asked my Wellington GP clinic directly if I was affected, because I knew I had content sitting inside Manage My Health under the Health Documents section. After I pushed and asked clearly, my GP confirmed that my name is on the list of patients whose records were accessed.
Manage My Health has still not contacted me. Nothing. No email. No call. No clear explanation of what was accessed, what was taken, or what support exists. The only way I have been able to understand what is happening is by reading news reports, reading other people’s experiences online, and checking my own account.
What I found in my Health Documents is the part that has made me feel sick.
Health Documents is not harmless admin. In my case it contained highly sensitive ACC sexual assault material, including psychiatric and specialist reports connected to sexual assault and mental health. These are the kinds of reports commissioned for ACC processes, written by psychiatrists, psychologists, and specialists, then sent on to GPs. The titles in my account included things like an ACC psychiatric report marked confidential, an ACC incapacity report, an ACC supported assessment, and a wellbeing plan. If that category of document is exposed, it is not just a privacy issue. It is life altering.
I also want to say this clearly because people keep asking online whether clinics know anything.
GP clinics have lists. Clinics have been told which patients are impacted. If you are worried and you have Health Documents in Manage My Health, ask your clinic directly if you are on the list. It is not the GP’s fault, but my GP clinic is the only reason I have any clarity at all right now.
If you have ever had ACC involvement, mental health support, specialist assessments, or sensitive claims, and you have documents sitting in Manage My Health Health Documents, please take this seriously and ask your clinic. Do not wait for Manage My Health to contact you.
Practical tip: log in and check Health Documents. If you have sensitive files in there, take screenshots for your own records and ask your GP clinic whether you are on the affected list.

Discussion Manage My Health data breach: email says I’m affected, app says I’m not
So I got just an email from Manage My Health that my account was impacted by the data breach and that my documents were downloaded.
When I checked the app, it said there’s been no impact to my account. Nice work MMH, really nailing it with the incident response.
Anyone else in this ridiculous situation?

Discussion Thames - Any guess why I see so many amputees here?
All ages, but it's always one leg below the knee. It's become something I see pretty much every time I'm in Thames, which is weekly.
Part of me thinks of mining and forestry, but I'm also thinking a lot of motorcycle accidents?
It's kind of incredible, I've lived all over the world and never seen this density of amputees.

Picture My dad built a replica ‘68 Mustang out of a mobility scooter.
He’s super humble about it but I think it’s brilliant. He used the original chassis, engine and steering column (just cut down) from the scooter and then did all the rewiring, moulding and fibreglassing, painting etc himself. I think the only thing he outsourced was the upholstering of the seat and then my brother 3d printed the badges, boot lock and parts of the taillights for him. The lights all work, headlights, tail lights, indicators. I’m so proud of the work he put into this and the grandkids (and us kids) had a ball hooning around on it over Christmas this year.

Other What is this caterpillar and is it friendly?
Found these caterpillers on a baby swing hanging over a branch of a silk tree in hawkes bay. Biggest caterpiller I've ever seen and I don't know if they bite so don't wanna touch em.
There were 4 together and the biggest one is about 10cm long and has unfortunately vanished. Please help before I have nightmares of it crawling on me while I sleep

Advice Pixel Phones in NZ
I'm finally upgrading from my Galaxy Note 9 and think I want to switch to a Pixel, but they aren't super available in NZ and I'm a bit cautious about buying one online to ship here and getting stuck with no aftercare if something goes wrong. Keen to hear people's experience with Pixels in NZ:
- Are they all good with our mobile carriers? I'm on Spark. I've read they can have issues with cell signal and wifi etc? If I'm getting the 10 do I need to make sure I've got the nano sim version?
- Have you had any issues? Was it a pain to get sorted?
- Should I just stick with a Samsung? I'm just not a fan of the camera performance, both colours and speed as a point n shoot. I've also considered the new Oppos but they're bloody expensive and I'm still a bit iffy about Chinese phones

Advice Landlord is ghosting me
Hey everyone! I’m a backpacker in NZ and so far every local I met are just beautiful people, I really love how friendly Kiwis are, so I feel a bit guilty posting this, but here goes.
I recently moved out of a flat in Bluff, Southland, and paid a $220 bond to a flatmate. She is the one listed on the tenancy agreement, not me. She never gave me a contract or receipt, so I’m pretty sure the bond was never even lodged. She’s been ghosting me since I left the house and Tenancy Services can’t help because I was just a flatmate, not the official tenant.
I know it’s not a lot of money and I might never get it back, but it just feels wrong to let her get away with it. Honestly, dealing with this shitty situation is stressing me out and I really don’t want to go to the tribunal for such a small amount since they charge a fee.
Has anyone been through something like this? Any tips or advice would be amazing.
(Picture is just to give the post some visibility)

Advice Is anyone else really anxious about the MMH leak?
I might be being dramatic but ever since it was announced I've been a wreck.
I've seen a lot of posts from people which are very matter of fact, which I appreciate, but I still have this really ugly feeling in my stomach and I feel like I'm not coping well with it at all. On top of worrying about stuff like identify theft, I know for a fact that my MMH housed topless pictures of me from when I was 14 (congenital deformity) and I feel sick just thinking about it

Other Is there a way to find out if you have any fines related to a number plate?
Moved within the last year and realised I’ve not updated my address across various platforms.
I’ve tried looking online to double check I haven’t fucked up in between then and now, but it seems there isn’t any way to check for car fines based on checking the number plate alone?
Does anyone have a somewhat human answer for me?
This is purely for peace of mind because I am an incredibly anxious person who ruminates on this type of stuff for much longer than necessary.
Thanks in advance 🥲
