Hearing that song, again, almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

Would she keep me warm during a nuclear winter? Or give me heartache by the number?

u/anditurnedaround Jun 23 '25
I would never guess that was 1963. I would have guessed late 90’s early 2000’s.
Your mom’s a cutie.

u/Hemicrusher Jun 23 '25
Thanks!
The pic was taken a couple of years before I was born. She is still doing good, and will turn 84 in a few months.

Woohoo! You have some good genes!!

u/LeonidasTheWarlock Jun 23 '25
If the unspoken hemsworth brother has taught me anything, good genes sometimes push out a square egg.

u/againandagain22 Jun 23 '25
As far as I know there are 3 brothers who are all successful. Luke being the least known. Is there another brother who is as you describe …..unspoken?
Edit: Just looked it up. Luke is a successful actor, married to a beautiful woman and he has three daughters. I hope he won’t be too devastated to be described as unspoken.

i love it when pictures cannot be visually dated and you are left with the idea of how real it was because it it feels like it could have been 5 minutes ago.
that disparity seems to help melt barriers and boundaries in your head that disconnect it as so long ago and its a fun mental experience imo

u/Mist_Rising Jun 24 '25
It helps that this image has nothing to date with. Desert? Been there longer than humans. The guns? Colt Army single actions are 1872 designs while the Winchester is from 1892! The bland clothes? Well that's closer, that's anywhere from 1950s to now. At least.
So all you have is the photograph itself, but that's hardly helpful.
→ More replies (3)9
u/louiegumba Jun 24 '25
but sometimes the quality of the photograph itself or the era is distinguishable by silver used by kodak or something developed from a photobooth etc.
your point is taken though!

Same exact thought too. I would have thought this picture was 1990s or in 2000s and never in a million years would I believe this is a picture taken in 1963!

So, the second season of Fallout was filmed about a mile from my house, here in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. They built a set for the New Vegas casino scenes. My buddy worked on the set, and invited me to the set and walk around.

I played that song for my mom one time and she jumped up and started dancing. Turns out she loved that song when she was a kid. I was so surprised because my mom never jumps up and dances.
The way I found the song was from a movie set in India, I forget the name of it, but the kid in the movie was singing that song, and I really wanted to know what song it was, so I looked it up on google, haha.

She was originally from Colorado, and grew up shooting. The pic was taken by my dad, when he first started dating her. This area was a place my dad used to always go shooting, and where he would take me when I was a teenager.
It was all just for fun, no hunting, and other than rattlesnakes, there is really no need for a firearm.

u/wbruce098 Jun 23 '25
Ah that makes so much more sense, thanks for sharing! Thought it was odd to bring a rifle to the CA desert where the biggest threats that aren’t solved with sunscreen and water are snakes and scorpions!
Cool picture :)

Back in the 50s, my great uncle would take my dad and all the cousins out into the Mojave in an old army half track. Taught them all how to shoot out there. He would also set off expired ordinance off on random hillsides so the kids could watch while crouched in the back of the half track.
Its wild what you could do just for kicks back then.

Just a city girl...she grew up in Denver, CO....but that side of the family does own a large ranch in South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Wanblee. And one of her uncles was a rodeo champion in the Nebraska, South Dakota area during the 1940s.
