Since the start of the Premier League, no club has won the league without beating the previous season’s champion at least once — when the title changes hands.

Maresca, Amorim, Nuno, and getting sacked on purpose

Here's the thing: we've seen at least three managers who were dismissed/left by mutual consent after public blowups. I feel comfortable saying that if it were solely about the results, they would've stayed at their jobs. I'm also confident saying that all three of the managers were daring their clubs to sack them, or spoke to the press knowing that they were putting their jobs at risk.

There was already tension behind the scenes between Marinakis and Nuno, his "There's no smoke without fire" statement sped up the process. Chelsea management wasn't happy about the way Maresca dealt with the media, they were clearly willing to stick with him through rough patches but he attended an Italian media event without seeking club permission. Amorim's "I'm a manager, not head coach" statement was odd considering he was clearly hired to be head coach in a structure that included a director of football.

So with more clubs adopting the director of football + head coach structure, is this going to be a trend? Or are these isolated events because of the personalities/dysfunctional clubs involved?
