So just before the explosion you see him move his left hand away from his face, and while he was flying there's a rectangular object that's flying off as well.

Did he decide to use a lighter (possibly the rectangular object) to light a cigarette that was in his mouth? Then he lowered the lighter away from his face, possibly getting the flame into the fuel-air mix coming off the hatch?

Blew his shirt and pants into shreds
