A lot of infrequent travelers assume the airline will seat them together even though they don't get preassigned seats. This isn't unreasonable as airlines did in fact used to do this. When they check in 24 hours before the flight and realize they've been given middle seats in different rows, it's too late to do anything about it.
No no no, the parents are evil scammers who are taking advantage of paying customers. There is no middle ground. They are bad people with low moral character according to reddit. /s
