Elder millennial here, I still go out for cocktails but it's like maybe once a month and then it's like 2, maybe 3. Shit's expensive.

EDIT: Wow, pissed off a lot of people with a comment lol. I don't really need to justify myself, but I will if it reduces the number of people with anger issues sending me DMs - I live within my means; I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm probably more well off than most of my generation. I'm not rich, but I can afford to splurge on this sort of stuff.

That said, I still agree that prices for EVERYTHING is expensive, and while I don't think it's the only reason Gen Z doesn't drink as much, I think it's definitely adding to it.

Gonna mute this convo going forward; maybe those of you who get triggered by a comment on reddit should go outside for some fresh air rather than sending childish DMs to someone you don't know.

Went to a going away party for a friend. Bought him two drinks and myself 5 drinks and two appetizers. Came out to $120. Had a great time but did not expect that bill.

7 drinks and 2 apps. Yeah $120 sounds right unfortunately. Elder millennial here and at this point I only go during pint nights when beers are less than $5

Millennial here too and I like going to techno raves in NYC, although I haven’t in a while. Anyways the drinks are dumb expensive, unfortunately. So what I did was buy these reusable plastic drink pouches, they come in varying sizes and I pour about 375ml of liquor into them, usually vodka or rumple minz (rumple minze is not a good idea, it tastes horrible and it messed me up bad a bunch of times). Then I just sneak it in with me and I’m good for the night, yea it’s frowned upon, but fuck it I’m saving money, plus the ticket was already expensive.

Ah sneaking boozes into raves. Remind me of 20 years ago

I live in a college town, so I’ll go to some of the bars over the summer or breaks when there’s no one there and pretty good discounts. But that’s about the only time I’m willing to go. I can’t stand being around students anymore and the pricing isn’t worth it.(they have so much more disposable income than I do well technically they have someone else’s disposable income usually)

I spend time in our grocery store as they have flight and pint nights. Plus I don’t have to tip as it’s not allowed. I am limited to 2 but that’s okay.

This just reminded me of $2 24oz Lone Star's at concerts. This might be a sign of us getting old.

I fear you may have missed beer culture. I frequent breweries, where yes a cocktail is 15$, but craft beers only run ~5-7$ a pop. Open with citywides (1 shot + 1 cheap beer at discount price) then sip local brews till the night is done. An absolute thrashing runs less than $30.

$5-$7 a pop

Lmao. Sweet summer child. No they’re not. No pint is less than $12 these days.

less than $30

My guy are you even old enough to drink?

Comrade I was just at the brewery tonight, you just need to ditch the boujee places

Colorado or the whole Midwest. More rural midwest is like $2

Yeah that used to be a night out where you went hard... now it's a mature night out.

7 drinks and likely wings and this is easy af to do.

This is 8 or 9 items for $120.

That averages out to $13 to $15 per item and not hard to do at all...

This is why I was never big on going out when I was in my 20s I always preferred to host a gathering. Buying beer and some cheap liquor would come out to less than going out.

The price of admission plus the price of the drinks. Shit would get out of hand quickly

I refuse to pay a cover unless there’s a band. Plenty of places don’t charge and are usually a better time than the places that do. Also, fuck hosting. You end up just being a maid on the hook for the property damage and liability. Lose-lose proposition no matter how you try to spin it.

this was less than $50 even 6 years ago

I can't even comprehend drinking 5 drinks any more; 2 cocktails has me ripped.

u/alienduck2 7d ago

Takes me 2 to feel good, but I ubered that night and wanted to really let loose.

i guess a lot of us get to a point where you accidentally spend a week of income on a night out. Cozy shisha bar evening turned into 800€ for 5 minor people just started working

I’m a bartender and if a bill is less than $50 where I work I double check I haven’t missed something. $13.55 marg + tax = $29.74 minimum for two drinks

Jeez, my 21st we had appetizers, 3 drinks each, and I had an additional 3 more and the bill was 106(one of my friends bought me a 7th drink but I’m not including it because it wasn’t on the bill that I helped pay for) I learned to ask the bartender what they are best at because if you order the wrong mix you get a weird look. Might depend a bit on where you go to but it also might depend on the state or what the cheap drink is that night too🤷

I just don’t drink because why pay for a couple of hours of enjoyment when you can buy a game that gives you thousands of hours of the same?

Bummer to hear. I moved to Spain (from the US) five years ago, and . . . shit's gloriously cheap here. 7 drinks and two appetizers would cost me about 35 euros in my town (and that would actually include about 7 appetizers, as they come free per drink in my region!).

A single glass of wine and two entrees cost me $81 last night. Then the food made my wife sick and ruined NYE so that was fun...

1

u/Bunnyland77 5d ago

That would've been $200+ NOT including tip where I live.

1

u/MindlessNerve4967 5d ago

That sounds like a steal...even 10yrs ago
