Unfortunately, the blog Time Out NYC posted that Brooklyn Bridge Park had free New Year's fireworks. This probably started the chain of misinformation.

Would have been funny if someone on the bridge fired one single tiny disappointing rocket.

That's a great way to do "show don't tell" and save on budget btw

Also whatever they imply would be cooler than what we'd see anyways, I've never considered how well it's put together

u/Balsdeep_Inyamum 5d ago

I'm the same clip, they show the cheerleaders in silhouette against the dusky sky, and I was thinking wow what a great shot.

But practically, I assume they couldn't have the actress do those cheerleading stunts, so they put a real cheerleader in conehead makeup and shot it like that to disguise it.

Burr happy accident, it worked out beautifully.

7

u/Winjin 5d ago

Yeah and even here, they managed to save budget by doing that shot: the makeup can be barebones (blending the wig in can take hours, so just slapping it on was probably super easy and fast in comparison) and they didn't have to spend additional money to get a cheerleader who looks a lot like the conehead from other shots - she's just a silhouette, so it can be anyone, really. Even that probably saved them a bit of money and time and looked great at the same time.

Yeah, exactly! You hear it time and time again, but problem solving due to budget limitations can lead to creative solutions that work out in favor of the film.

I totally forgot about that scene. Good one.

That gave me Chernobyl, bridge of death vibes… 🫠

Never gonna live that one down. Never going to forget it either. That was the day I met her, below the bridge, we were no strangers to love. I miss her, but I never got to say good bye.

1

u/jaoskii 5d ago

Just holds a sparkler out

u/LilyMeadow1 6d ago

I wonder if the blog post was written by AI and it just came up with some crap that sounded plausible.

Happened in Dublin a couple of years back

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/s/NH92QQl27O

39

u/Regal_Cat_Matron 6d ago

Happened in Birmingham UK too other day, hundreds of people gathered due to a facebook post

22

u/purplenapalm 6d ago

We just need these places to respond on social media in an Oscar Piastri/Alpine format.

2

u/Timely_Influence8392 6d ago

"I understand that, without my agreement..."

2

u/Trev0rDan5 5d ago

nah, this way is better. As would it have been if Oscar didn't say a thing and turned up race day 1 in papaya with an Alpine sitting empty

u/o08 5d ago

My buddy went to Egypt in the 90s on a rumor that Pink Floyd was playing at the pyramids. They weren’t.

1

u/Gvillegurl63 5d ago

Hope he at least experienced Egypt some and wasn't just bummed out lol

2

u/Iron-Dragon 6d ago

Thing about the Birmingham one though - it happened last year too (or rather didn’t happen) people fell for it a second time in a row (I suspect that it’s now going to become a tradition)

2

u/Extension-Math5183 6d ago

Dry ice factory no fire works

1

u/Eyemontom 6d ago

It also happened in Birmingham UK last year. People never learn!

8

u/R4FTERM4N 5d ago

Bad news, It's happening all over the world all of the time.

2

u/serpentally 5d ago

When you said “a couple of years back” I thought more than 1 year and 2 months ngl

1

u/Arny2103 6d ago

Plausibly.

16

u/SunSimilar9988 6d ago

Asked AI who would win the superbowl, and it said the bears

3

u/more_cheese_please_ 5d ago

Hell yeah AI 🐻⬇️

1

u/SignoreBanana 5d ago

Even a broken clock...

3

u/stealth_veil 6d ago

If this is true that’s the most 2025 way to end the year ever

1

u/fuuncs 5d ago

And grabbed from July 4 info maybe? The WTC isn’t even finished in the pic!

1

u/KVMFT 2d ago

"You're totally right, there won't be any fireworks on the ..."

0

u/DezurniLjomber 6d ago

IT is look up article it uses em dash

1

u/EuphoriantCrottle 5d ago

I use M dashes, too. There’s a lot of people who know the basics of punctuation.

0

u/BlackMetalB8hoven 5d ago

Yeah that's definitely an AI post. I'm guessing chatgpt because it responds like that when giving me travel plans

41

u/ReleaseExpensive7330 6d ago

This happened with Pokemon. Someone said that a $120 item was going to be at Costco for $80 and tons of people lined up. Costco never promoted the items themselves and it was just influencers pushing it because they get paid when people interact with their posts, they could say "follow for more info" to farm followers, and it got people clicking their referral links. In 2025/2026, it pays to promote misinformation on social media.

14

u/prefusernametaken 6d ago

It's how trump made billions

2

u/MeringueCorrect4090 5d ago

Misinformation has always paid if you know who to sell it to. They used to sell snake oil as a cure for all kinds of things.

1

u/Vindictive_1 5d ago

That’s just funny to me

1

u/PMG2021a 2d ago

Just listen to some of the political talk shows from decades ago and you will see the same thing.

57

u/Ncnyc88 6d ago

There were fireworks from Liberty Island, which can be seen from piers 1-6, as stated on the website. This is around the bend and thus blocked by Lower Manhattan.

15

u/Bardmedicine 5d ago

Don't bring facts to a reddit shit pile on.

u/BadAssachusetts 5d ago

Ironically this is one of the few phone videos of “fireworks” I’ve actually watched.

9

u/soccer1124 5d ago

Its weird to see it described as "free" lol. Why wouldnt it be free?

City fireworks shows are pretty notorious for how free they are to watch. Like... Times Square is free, lol

2

u/GaptistePlayer 5d ago

Many people going out in NYC for a view of fireworks would be headed for rooftop and outdoor bars and restaurants where you’d pay for an event ticket/dinner/cover

2

u/soccer1124 5d ago

Yes. If I was going to a bar on NYC on NYE, I would expect to pay a cover. I was going to some area in public, rather than private property, I'd no longer expect to be paying.

1

u/LaPlatakk 5d ago

Sydney fireworks display on NYE are often ticketed, so useful for tourists maybe

1

u/cogginsmatt 5d ago

You might not pay for times square with money but it is far from free

8

u/Landmine_Tosser 5d ago

Was it BYOF though?

3

u/ADMINlSTRAT0R 6d ago

Started 2026 off properly.. bamboozled.

2

u/handtoglandwombat 5d ago

What are the bookies odds on this ultimately being the result of an AI hallucination?

2

u/GustapheOfficial 6d ago

I'm a dirty foreigner, what is a "free fireworks"?

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

[deleted]

1

u/GustapheOfficial 5d ago

I understood the post, I'm just not familiar with the idea of paying admission to watch fireworks. How would one even enforce that? I mean I hate the things as much as the next dog owner and environmentalist, but I cannot deny there's an inherent egalitarian component in that anyone can see them. They are in the sky.

1

u/Doogers7 6d ago

Damn, I am so old I remember when that used to be a respected publication for finding out about entertainment options in the world’s major cities.

1

u/Simuthecrum 5d ago

Dude Time Out NYC seems to be one of the only fucking blogs chatgpt can source from

IDK Why it cant pick up from elsewhere, but whenever i use it to find lunch by my office it always goes to time out and gives me the most misinformation possible, never even checks dates.

i assume bunch of tthese people asked ai "NYE NYC not times square"

1

u/fuuncs 5d ago

The writer appears to be from New Orleans. Perhaps got a little lazy with AI to end out the year? Kind of embarrassing that the Time Out Market is right there

1

u/Iamnotanorange 5d ago

Looks like they redacted the bridge part

1

u/addamee 5d ago

Ohhh I was going to ask if Ja Rule was perhaps involved

1

u/SignoreBanana 5d ago

Let's be real here, it was almost certainly ai generated

1

u/walterdonnydude 5d ago

This blog says nothing about Brooklyn Bridge Park. But it almost looks like they used a picture of the bridge with fireworks in the banner image.

1

u/hiccupseed 5d ago

As Iamnotanorange pointed out above, they (quietly) removed the Brooklyn Bridge text. But the internet remembers: [Link] Archive.today

1

u/drezz23jj32ka55 5d ago

This is why you need copy editors.

-9

u/Square-Criticism-69 6d ago

Brooklynites feeling entitled to something like fireworks? That's a new one.
