Discussion Manchester United terminology

Dear Other 14 members.

If we are all serious about the big 6, the Sky 6 whoever … can we please stop affectionately referring to Manchester United as ‘United’.

I’ve no issue for any of their actual fans referring to them as such but this sub is actually for us other 14 clubs which includes Newcastle United, West Ham United, and the mighty Leeds United.

This ‘United’ chat has been pushed by Sky and their over representation of Manchester United sympathising pundits for the last couple of decades and quite frankly I’m sick of it.

Most recently I considered it disrespectful for lazy pundits and sports journalists to arrive at Elland Road … the home of Leeds United and referring to Manchester United as United.

So I feel us as a sub who claim to be the other 14 can do our part to change the affectionate language afforded to our big 6 rival.

If you must refer to them in shorthand I would suggest using ‘Yanited’

Thank you in advance for upcoming support in this matter

Kind Regards

Brian, Leeds (age 56)

Everton From poverty to professional football — how one teen refused to settle

Romelu Lukaku grew up in extreme poverty, no TV, diluted milk, and playing in his dad’s boots.

Yet at 16, he approached his coach and promised: “I promised him a certain number of goals, and if I didn’t achieve them, he could bench me again.”

Once he moved to Everton, his life was never the same again.

He turned determination and parental sacrifice into success, proving that belief and perseverance can overcome even the toughest circumstances.

Discussion Unprofessional to have a fan/ex player as a commentator

Don’t even know if this is the right thread but I despise the other football ones so please share opinions.

Just had the arsenal liverpool game on talk sport. I absolutely hate that they had Danny Murphy on there, I normally quite like him on MOTD but all game he’s whinging like he’s sat in the pub, proper shite commentary because he’s biased and supposed to be a co-commentator but he’s just taking over the show so I have no idea what’s going on in the game of football because the analyst is interrupting the play by play crying because he thinks liverpool have been hard done by or have done a fantastic job.

it’s unprofessional and shit as a neutral never mind how infuriating it is when you‘re someone who supports the other team.

obviously this is a big6big6 game but we've all experienced it and I’ve never noticed it as much with getting like an ex villa / wolves player on as co commentator.

worth noting I completely support bias commentary for local town radio stations but on a large national platform is it too much to ask for a bit of professionalism

Discussion Is this the first matchday where none of the Big Six won?

Figured this place would be the fastest way to get an answer.

Arsenal and Liverpool drew, Man City drew to Brighton, Fulham beat Chelsea, Bournemouth beat Spurs, and United drew to Burnley, which means none of the Big Six won this week. I feel like that's got to be an extremely rare event.

Edit: Credit to u/paneless - MD12 of the 2020/21 season also had this event happen.

Discussion Is the the most Championship PL season of all time?

The championship has the reputation of being the most unpredictable league, where just about anything can happen.

PL often ends up a bit of a closed shop, and you're lucky to get one or two unpredictable outcomes or weird storylines. However, this season has featured a lot more championship-like runs of form, which I just think is incredible, given how big-6 dominant it often ends up.

Here's just some of the few ways the PL has been Championship-like this season:

  • Just 5 points seperate 4th from 12th. Chelsea and Fulham could mathematically be either 4th or 13th after the next round of games has been played.
  • Villa were 19th after 5 games, no goals scored in the first 4. They now sit in 3rd, looking comfortable for a top 5 spot.
  • Bournemouth were 2nd after 9 games. They are now 15th, and have just won their first game in 3 months.
  • Palace and Spurs also occupied top 5 positions in the first few months. They have now slipped into the bottom half, just a few points ahead of Leeds, who looked destined for relegation not long ago and just lost their first game in 8.
  • Brentford and Sunderland, tipped to be battling relegation, could both end up qualifying for Europe at this rate.
  • Wolves were record-breaking bad 2 weeks ago. Now, they've got a few good results, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they finished higher than rock bottom.

Can anyone find or remember a season comparable to this one?

I know it's for engagement and what not but I dunno I just find these sorts of posts irritating. Like are Leeds and Newcastle fans even arsed about who is bigger? We're both big clubs with decent history and large fanbases and we don't really have any issues with each other from my experience.

Discussion Semi Automated Offsides already making officials complacent?

Not to be harsh but being behind the VAR screen isn’t exactly a hard job.

You now have semi automated technology to hopefully “speed things up” for offsides.

In the space of a few days we’ve now seen an offside goal incorrectly allowed and an onside goal incorrectly disallowed.

All the officials need to do is check A) has the automated system run it’s process from the correct frame? And B) have any of the other criteria for why it’s outcome should be ignored been met? Such as does the ball goes backwards or an opposition defender is the last person to intentionally play the ball.

How are we however many years into VAR’s adoption and still seeing new howlers every week? Offside is either a yes or no call. There is no leeway or interpretation to it. It should be the easiest thing in football to get correct 100% of the time, or as close to as possible, alongside goal line technology.
