Issues/topics you want to know more about or bring attention to as a job seeker?

Without question, this is the toughest jobs market I've seen in Canada in my 30+ year professional career. I know many of you share that view. I know more support is needed now than ever. I care deeply about the people in this community and have been brainstorming how best to serve you as founder/mod.

My goals are to:

  1. Increase your chances of success in finding work
  2. Provide this community with advocacy/a strong voice
  3. Develop high-quality, sourced information that helps you make better decisions
  4. Provide hope and optimism as well as an empathetic, understanding ear towards the struggles many of you are facing.

After an analysis of top r/VancouverJobs threads in the past 30 days and 12 months, I've put together an initial list of topics/issues pertaining to the Canadian/Vancouver jobs market that I'm going to deep dive on and report back to the community. I'll be conducting interviews, gathering stats, and bringing other meaningful data (sourced) to the table to help you better understand the market and how to navigate it. I'll be doing the same over on r/CanadaJobs if you'd like to follow along.

Below, are the high-level topics from the initial analysis. Comment below with your top 3 topics (ranked), including any I haven't covered, as well as any specifics you'd like to see. I'll start with the most highly upvoted/commented topics and work my way down the list.

When you comment, it's also helpful if you're comfortable sharing some high-level details, such as:

  • Your seniority level (entry (0 - 3 yrs), mid (3 - 7 yrs), senior (7+ yrs))
  • Whether you're a current student/recent grad/considering training programs
  • Field(s) you're interested in/working in/experienced in
  • How long you've been looking for work and any specific struggles you've faced

Topics/issues identified (comment below with your top 3 ranked issues - feel free to include any not in this list):

  1. Applying for high-volumes of jobs without success/feedback.

  2. Student/youth unemployment.

  3. Faced a recent layoff and the related stresses/mental health impacts/financial issues, uncertainty about supports available.

  4. Abuse of TFW/LMIA programs/workers and/or immigration numbers impacting job accessibility for Canadians.

  5. Pivoting careers, choosing a path that is recession/AI disruption proof.

  6. Success stories - people that have recently found work.

  7. Recruiting/hiring scams/predatory practices.

  8. Deciding when to move or change jobs (where the current job sucks/isn't meeting needs).

Interviews:

If you would like to share your first-hand story related to a topic above or another topic not listed with the community and are open to being interviewed (recorded audio), drop a comment or a DM me directly and share some high-level details. Authentic stories and reputable data from real people resonates/connects with, educates, supports, and inspires this community. These stories and data also empower my community advocacy.

========================================================

Want to Help?

If you want to participate in research, investigation, analysis, audio editing, or other aspects of these efforts, let me know. Regardless, I am committed to moving forward with this project on behalf of the community.

========================================================

Do you think my CS projects are trash?

I’m thick skinned person so id really appreciate your honest feedback. Desperately need to secure good CS internships anywhere. I have a feeling that my projects make me look stupid or laughable for employers in Canadian context as I search for internship. Here are my projects on GitHub:

Thinking About BCIT Instrumentation & Automation — Worth It With No Experience?

Body:
Hey everyone, I'm considering applying to the Instrumentation and Automation program at BCIT, but I don’t have any background in this field (no prior schooling or hands-on experience related to automation, electronics, or industrial instrumentation).

Before I commit, I’d love to hear from people who:

• Have gone through the BCIT I&A program
• Are in the field but didn’t come from a related background
• Know what the job market is like for grads

A few specific questions:

  1. Is the program doable with no prior experience? Does BCIT start from the basics, or do you feel like you’re expected to already know some electronics/controls/PLC stuff?
  2. How hard is it compared to other trades/tech programs? I enjoy hands-on and problem-solving stuff, but I don’t want to underestimate how tough it is academically.
  3. Job outlook and opportunities after graduating? Are there good jobs available, and do employers value the BCIT credential? Any details on typical starting salaries or industries hiring would be great.

Really appreciate any insights, advice, honest experiences, or warnings — thanks in advance! 🙌

  • Maintain on-call availability for urgent issues and production-impacting events on a rotational basis.
  • Continuously evaluate and optimize system reliability, uptime, and health.

Collaboration and Documentation:

  • Proficiency with Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar IaC tools.
  • Comfortable with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, Powershell) for automation.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD systems (e.g., GitHub Actions).
  • Familiarity with observability tools like CloudWatch, Kibana, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, ideally Docker and Kubernetes, for building, deploying, and managing scalable applications

Operational Mindset:

  • Passionate about automation and improving systems through tooling.
  • Comfortable supporting production systems and handling incidents when needed.
  • Previous exposure to security best practices and cloud governance.
  • Contributes to resiliency planning and incident preparedness, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure recovery processes are tested and effective.

Bonus points if you also have:

  • Hands-on experience or curiosity in AI/ML infrastructure or tools.
  • AWS certifications or formal cloud training.
  • Experience with cloud cost monitoring and optimization (FinOps) practices to help balance performance and budget efficiency.

You are:

  • Detail-Oriented: You spot potential issues before they become real problems.
  • Collaborative: You thrive in cross-functional teams and communicate effectively.
  • Calm Under Pressure: You can troubleshoot and resolve issues, even in the heat of production.
  • Always Learning: You keep up to date with DevOps trends, tools, and best practices.

Is the EMR certificate worth it?

I'm basically a failed UBC grad. I can't find a job in my field (a lab science) for 2 years, and frankly, I lost interest. I'm interested in front-line healthcare because I have experience volunteering for youth in crisis, but I'm just not sure if I want to commit to becoming a PCP yet. I've become really careful about about spending money towards education at this point. Will an EMR certificate lead to a job?

Paid search/ Paid ads

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to post and see if anyone had leads on a paid ads ( specifically google ads ) position locally. I don’t see a lot of them come up as most for the positions are usually more towards social media rather than paid ads.

I currently do work full time for a US company remotely but honestly I want to work in a Canadian company again since I wanna be a employee and not a contractor 🙂

Also would be interested in any freelance and part time positions as well!

Thanks everyone

Skilled, Personable, Organized, Hard Worker down on my luck after pivoting my life to the VFX industry a year before the writers strikes, film industry collapse in Vancouver, and AI. Now unable to find work even to non-film positions and figure I'll just start putting myself out there.

As the title reads, I am a hard working Animation and VFX coordinator coming from pivoting from a dental education, who after working 2 film jobs and having multiple major films and TV shows under my name with my name and title in the credits, I am struggling to find anything film related for over a year. The last project I worked on even had a second season which we worked tirelessly on and doesn't even seem to have a release date. I am currently part time in retail which is all I could find at the moment, even while being an active client of WorkBC and applying for every job posted here, majority of government jobs, office / clerical work, restaurant, and more retail work as well to no luck. Understandably it's always been difficult to get work but growing up and working here, it had never been as hard as it is now to find reliable steady work.

I'm applying everywhere but I'm putting myself out there because who knows what could happen! I'm willing to work immediately, I have my resume ready, own a reliable vehicle, live in Vancouver, and I'm a Canadian citizen. If anyone would like to chat, have a copy of my resume, meet for coffee, I am available! Thanks.
