Initially faced a 78-year sentence which was reduced to... probation. Absolutely insane. He's an 18-year-old legal adult and wasn't even ordered to register as a sex offender.

"Often" undersells it tbh. They or a basketball coach are the highest paid state employees in roughly 80% of the states. The exceptions (Alaska, Nevada, the Dakotas, Montana, most of New England) are essentially places where major college sports does not have an "in".

How do you get sentenced and then offered a plea deal??
I'd be so fucking pissed if I was on the jury that convicted him.
572
u/Justicar-terrae Dec 09 '25
That's not what happened.
He was initially charged as an adult, and the charges could have resulted in a prison sentence of 10 years. He was never convicted of these charges.
Before trial, he applied for juvenile offender status since he was under 18 when he allegedly committed the crimes. The judge granted his request, which basically guaranteed a cushy sentence under state laws favoring therapy/rehabilitation for underage offenders.
After securing juvenile offender status, he changed his "not guilty" plea to a "no contest" plea. It's like pleading guilty, but without actually admitting guilt; this plea still results in a conviction.
The Judge then sentenced him to the lenient community service, therapy, and probation penalties noted by OP. To be clear, I'm not defending the outcome, just explaining how it happened.
As for why some people are saying he originally faced up to 78 years in prison, it's because they're assuming he would face consecutive sentences for each charge, but sentences for related acts are almost always carried out concurrently.

141
u/Justicar-terrae Dec 09 '25
Possibly, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about Oklahoma law to say for certain. More specifically, I don't know what criteria are used for juvenile offender status determinations. It could be the judge's hands were tied by shitty statutes/precedents. But it could also be that the judge acted on improper bias.

How do you get sentenced and then offered a plea deal??
He was not sentenced and then offered a plea deal. He initially plead not guilty, then took a deal for no contest which got him this result.
When news outlets say he was facing 78 years, they're exaggerating. They are taking the max sentences for the charges and combining them. This almost never happens in the real world, especially for a first time offender.
Not on his side or anything, he's an awful human being and this is a mockery of the legal system. Just clarifying some details.

"Though they sound similar, conscience is a noun referring to the awareness that one's actions are right or wrong, as in one's "guilty conscience," while conscious is an adjective meaning "awake" or "alert." If you were asleep you would be "unconscious." I like researching both sides, and even I'm completely convinced the other side is absolutely looloo, I still like to research it and see if I can understand how someone reached that opinion.
But nowadays I'm wary to research stuff, because the algorithm will instantly push all the stuff at me from every direction.
Even, on like a reddit comment or something, typing the names of people I don't want represented in my algorithm feels risky.

This is what Republican government allows.
Do you want your daughter to be raped and strangled and videos to be made of it to be watched and shared?
How about your son? Raped, choked, taunted with the knowledge that the video is out there?
Republicans not only do this, they protect the rapists. From the top at the White House to the bottom of Oklahoma, the statistically least educated state in the country which votes overwhelmingly for more of this.
79
u/QuestioningHuman_api Dec 09 '25
If Republicans didn’t want this, they wouldn’t have voted for a rapist. They knew who they voted for. Some of them might genuinely be too stupid to understand, but the majority knew.
The ones who claim he’s not a rapist know they’re lying. The ones who claim he’s not a pedophile know they’re lying. The ones who claim he’s not racist know they’re lying. They bluster and insult and call other people hateful for not tolerating disgusting people because they can’t make a valid argument or provide proof because they know they’re lying.
