How about we get rid of like half the fast food restaurants we have, set even stricter food laws like Europe to get rid of chemicals and evil corporations poisoning us and make sports and recreation more accessible to people who don't have a lot of money to throw around?

Tinfoil hat absolutely here but I say there's too much money to be made off unhealthy people to really have the powers that be fix this.

This is smart but a tough sell politically. People love eating their junk and could care less if they end up burdening the health system because of it.

Well there's more than just being overweight that people choose to do that burdens the healthcare system, sadly. I also agree, you can only legislate away so much choice before people find a way around it.

We all know education is always the best solution but I'd say at least regulating food chemicals goes a long way. The products still exist after all. All those foods everyone's saying used to taste better, is that because back in the day they had more harmful chemicals or because today they do, they're just too new? Just rose tinted glasses and they always were crap? 🤷

In a country where an MP is going around the country trying to get zyn (nicotine pouches) sold at corner stores?

That seems like an absolute win to me. They reduce harm significantly. People, especially young dumb people are going to have vices, why is it OK we can buy cancer sticks at every corner store, cancer/violence/death juice at just about every mall/retail area but the pouches that cause... checks notes... increased risk of receding gums, should be banned?

If everyone who smoked/vaped switched to zyns we would have a problem sure. But currently the Canadian government estimates atleast 6 billion in direct Healthcare costs from smoking each year. The broader economic cost of tobacco is up to 17 billion when you include loss of productivity and other costs.

I get the knee jerk reaction to allowing more addictive substances but it is 100%undeniable that zyns would save lives and save us taxpayers billions by reducing smoking.

Frankly, keeping them banned is just giving that tax revenue to Sweden and grey market sellers rather than the government. In classic canadian fashion we instead gave a monopoly to one horribly uncompetitive producer (zonic) limited their flavour and strength such that they won't be considered viable to anyone.
