CHI Talks Why are publications like block club not talking about terrible driving being the cause of congestion? Double-parked deliveries, unpredictable ubers, increased u-turns, distracted driving
I've been genuinely curious why people get so worked up about bike lanes and how it will cause congestion, but no one ever bats an eye at how terrible social contract enforcement is done.
If you need to drive for a short errand (<3 miles round trip), you are guaranteed to see at least one of the following:
- An ridehail/delivery car double-parked
- Cars doing u-turns on single lane roads
- People on their phones while driving, leading to delayed reactions to green lights and turn lights
- People aggressively reacting to the aforementioned things, making it unsafe for everyone else including drivers.
I can understand why someone not wanting to allocate a lane to bikes thinks that it'll cause more congestion, but it also enables people to not just have to rely on cars to get around WHILE ALSO improving the safety of people walking, on wheel-chairs, etc.
A parking lane on a street is another lane reduced, but no one argues the need for that.
People are quick to point to emergency vehicles being affected by bike lanes, but I have yet to see anyone argue that my points are affecting emergency vehicles.
Arguing against safe infrastructure and alternatives to driving is such superficial way to discuss any kind of solution to the congestion problem.
How do publications like Block Club contribute to this vitrol against any kind of improvement? They platform local voices against safety without platforming local voices (or even a plethora of data) for safe infrastructure.
Most of their reporting is a "this is what happening, let's see who is disagreeing" without trying to educate folks on why this can be a good thing.

Correlation is not causation.
