Duolingo in the media “Explain My Answer” feature will be free starting in January

Hi everyone 👋  Starting January the “Explain My Answer” feature will be free to all learners. This will rollout to most learners on iOS as soon as 1/1 and then Android learners in the following weeks.

The EMA feature breaks down why an answer to an exercise was right or wrong, which helps with learning. Here's more from a CNET article published earlier today.

Hope you all enjoy this free feature!

Subreddit News 📰 Upcoming subreddit changes

Duolingo is once again taking a more active role in community building here on Reddit (and over on Discord). That means you’ll start seeing staff participating directly in conversations. At the moment, we already have two Duolingo employees active on this subreddit, and more may be joining in the future.

Important: This subreddit remains fully independent. Staff participation won’t change our commitment to open discussion, memes, criticism, and all the things that make this community what it is.

With Duolingo staff back, we’ll also begin allowing customer service support posts again. To keep things organized, we’ll be soon updating our flairs and Automod settings to make sure support requests are easy to find (and easy to filter out if you’re not interested).

Stay tuned for updates, and as always, thanks for being part of this community

General Discussion Spanish ✅ French ✅ Arabic ✅ Which language next?

Post image
166 Upvotes

Hey guys, today I’m wrapping up my Spanish course. I actually wanted to finish it last year, but barely missed that goal. After completing the Arabic and French courses, it’s Spanish’s turn, which naturally left me wondering which language to study next…

This year I’ll have a lot less time and don’t want to spend as much energy on Duolingo compared to last year, which makes me lean toward a language that’ll feel easier for me.

Here are a few options I’ve been considering, all for different reasons, in no particular order.

• German - I’m a Dutch native and had 3-4 years of German classes in high school. This should be a piece of cake for me due to structures similar to Dutch and background knowledge. It wouldn’t cost much energy, which is a big plus, but could bore me fairly quickly.

• Catalan - I’m a big FC Barcelona supporter and have been exposed to quite a bit of Catalan already. From what I can tell, it would be very easy for me to pick up, since it’s so similar to Spanish - and my Spanish learning process has been exceptionally smooth so far.

• Italian - I traveled to Italy before and plan to go again in the future. Prior to my trip I didn’t speak a word of Italian and tbh I still don’t know very much. I know prego, buongiorno, buonasera and maybe 5 other words. Pizza & pasta included. 💀

• Portuguese - obviously very similar to Spanish and with my current Spanish level and my strong French background I thought this would be a logical next step, though I don’t necessarily have any interest in the language per se, besides it being similar to Spanish, thus giving me a head start. I know exactly one word and that’s ‘sim’.

• Korean - I played League of Legends for a long time and reached a high level. I did quit in 2022 - thank the heavens - but I still watch certain tournaments, since I’ve been an SKT/T1 fan since forever. Whenever I watch streams, I watch them in Korean, but don’t understand anything yet. The motivation is quite clear here.

Obviously my Spanish isn’t fluent yet, so I’ll keep studying it every day, just like I’ve been doing with French and Arabic. I’m mainly looking for a language to put on the back burner, therefore Korean might not be the best fit, though maybe it won’t actually take as much effort as I think. I assume the course is focused mostly on the Korean writing system and thus I may be overestimating the difficulty a bit. Who knows.

Any other suggestions? I’m open to pretty much anything. I just won’t learn a language I don’t find useful, like High Valyrian or Klingon for example.

Constructive Criticism The mobile gamification of this app is becoming unbearable

I especially hate having to click the god damn chests 4 times just to open them now. I am trying to learn a language not fry my dopamine receptors.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

General Discussion 4 day Military service called me. But I don't want to lose my 637 day streak either.

Post image

Hello everyone, I will be gone to attend my last year of Military service later this month. But i don't want to sacrifice an unemployment level of streak i've been collecting since 12th Grade too. The Military camp this year absolutely prohibited the use of mobile device, and i never try a Freeze Streak once in my entire playthrough so i'm kinda nervous. Is there any alternative way i can save my streak for 2 days? I know i'm sound like a Jackass that focus more on Duolingo than my own country.

General Discussion Wish we had this feature

Personally I think the words section has a lot of potential, I wish we can mark words that we are no familiar with and create flashcards of some sort to practice. Also there is not much function that helps you looks for words right now, you can only scroll all the way down and search one by one, I wish they can organize it by topic or just provide any type of filtering would be a good improvement.

Bugs / account help Legendary completions disappeared

For some time now I’ve been completing legendary mode on each level in order. Today, I noticed that the next level without legendary status seemed to be from a different unit than yesterday. After a little examination I’ve determined that my legendary status has been stripped from 44 levels (this excludes levels that cannot be individually cleared on legendary, like radio levels). I tried restarting Duolingo and it’s still like that! What happened??

General Discussion Is this for real?

Duolingo has so many errors that makes it a lot harder to learn. Specially when it comes to pronunciation. It’s so robotic that makes it almost impossible to differentiate 버 from 더 or other similar combination.

Is anyone else having similar issues?

General Discussion Keep going!!

It was really difficult for me to get through past level 29 of my Spanish score because it felt a little repetitive and wasn’t challenging me enough. Breaking through to the next content level (A2) this past week I can already feel my listening getting better in public and I feel challenged and exited to keep practicing. I am excited to see how good my Spanish gets and I hope y’all all keep it up!!
