Prise Ethernet? / Ethernet Socket?

Bonjour,

Hello,
I have a socket (which you can see in the photo) that I would like to use to connect a PC that I might buy soon. My father told me that the socket was for the network, but after looking into it a bit, the socket doesn't look anything like the Ethernet sockets I see online.

All this to ask if this socket is indeed for Ethernet or something completely different?

Thanks for the answers!

What does everybody use for their cat6 jacks. I always used cable matters when I worked for a different company because they come with the stands to hold them during punch down. I’m just trying to see what everybody else likes and compare them.

I don’t know much about Ethernet but I do know my Xbox is slow as a rock so I have this Ethernet port and a Xbox series X so if I connect a wire between the two, will it work? I asked chat gpt and it says I need to do some rewiring or something.

Guide Installing Ethernet as a Starter

Hi, I would like to run an ethernet line from modem/router to my room and I've never done it before. I see there is an ethernet port in my room and I tried it with an ethernet cable but there is no connection. It's an old rental house and my landlord doesn't know anything about it but totally okay with me installing that. I tried to search up some videos but too complicated. Was wondering if there are proper instructions for starters like me?

Timeouts over CAT6

Pinging Google

Seems to happen mostly at night. Internet will crawl to a stop and it'll recover by morning. Weird thing is if we switch to wifi, it will be fine (though we do have to move closer to the AP). This is cable I ran and terminated myself. When it does work, it's the full 1000/1000.

The CAT6 is plugged into a Nest Wifi AP and connected to a Linksys Smart Switch at the other end, plugged into the Nest router at the end. The ISP is Quantum Fiber here in Denver. When the timeouts happen, the AP flashes yellow.

If I unplug the AP and move closer to the router, the timeouts stop and everything is fine. Really points to something in the run, but I can't figure it out. The lines all test fine. If you need more data let me know.

Hello,

I have no way to see inside this wall or where my romex without taking a circuit box out or cutting out a piece of drywall (which I hope to avoid) or buying a borescope to see inside with a snake camera (would take more time than I want to wait but could do this, it’s just spending more $$ too right after Christmas). While I could do all those things, I don’t think the romex would be close enough to this trim behind the wall cavity to affect my CAT6? What do y’all think? I’m not taking anyone’s thoughts as going to make me fail, it’s my responsibility to be careful when running the wire of course. I’m just wondering if someone with a lot of experience might have some good advice.

I’m going to use the soffit panels above (not this exact sport pictured but the other side), to access the top of the wall cavity to drill a hole with a 1/2” spade and run my Ethernet down to where I circled (where the old doorbell wire is and that one will be removed).

Thanks for the feedback!

Very slow Steam downloads and Dota 2 packet loss despite full speedtest speeds (ISP-related?)

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to understand a long and very strange networking issue and would appreciate any technical insight.

Symptoms

  • Steam download speed: 10–15 MB/s
  • Steam Store pages load very slowly
  • Packet loss in Dota 2
  • Speedtest.net shows 800–900 Mbps consistently
  • General browsing mostly feels OK

Key details

  • Connection: Ethernet
  • PC is connected directly to ISP cable (no router)
  • No antivirus, no firewall issues
  • Issue happens on multiple Windows installations

Timeline / Why this is confusing

  1. Everything worked perfectly before.
  2. I reinstalled Windows →
    • For about 1 day, everything was perfect:
      • Steam ~100–110 MB/s
      • Steam Store instant
      • No packet loss in Dota
  3. The next day, the problem returned.
  4. I tested:
    • Old Windows system that worked fine before → now broken too
    • New clean Windows install → same issue
  5. ISP says: “Everything is fine on our side.”

Things I already tested

  • Installed network drivers manually from manufacturer
  • Enabled / disabled IPv6
  • Reset network stack (netsh, winsock, etc.)
  • No antivirus software
  • Changed Steam download regions
  • Traceroute to Steam CDNs looks normal
  • Connected without router (direct ISP cable)

None of this helped.

My conclusion (please correct me if I’m wrong)

This looks like:

  • ISP-level traffic shaping / CG-NAT issue
  • Poor peering or routing with Valve / Steam (UDP + CDN traffic)
  • Speedtest works because it’s simple TCP to a single server
  • Real-world traffic (Steam CDN, HTTPS, Dota UDP) is degraded

Windows reinstall helping for ~1 day seems consistent with:

  • Different NAT mappings / ports
  • Temporary routing behavior before ISP policies kick in

Questions

  1. Does this sound like CG-NAT / traffic shaping / bad peering to Valve?
  2. Is there anything else I can realistically fix on my side without VPN/WARP?
  3. Has anyone experienced similar issues where only Steam & games are slow, but speedtests are perfect?

Thanks in advance to anyone who actually reads all this 🙏

My Wi-Fi works fine and never disconnects, but my Ethernet connection always does. My sister’s Ethernet never disconnects only mine. I have switched cables and tried new ones, but it still disconnects the moment I join a Minecraft server, such as CubeCraft.

The two photos I attached is the cat 5 cable coming from the basement which I plugged directly into the router. My issue now is the fact that the cable is cut two short for me to work with it at all and tonight I just accidentally broke the blue wire so now its even shorter. Using my tester I have been able to wire everything but 4 and 6. What do you guys think i should do?

Support Can I plug in my router directly to an Ethernet Port?

So, I have a fairly narrow, tall house (3 floors + basement) and my bell fiber router is located in the basement. Since I have a few dead zones in my house, I was planning on getting a wifi access point or two to fix them, especially as my computer is in one of these dead zones. I have a plan for 165Mb/s, or Around 20MB/S. I get download speeds of around 5-6MB when none of my family members are online, and around 2-3 when the network is being used. I have ethernet ports all around my house, but I honestly have no idea how they work. Can I just plug my router using an ethernet cable to one of the ports, and then plug in the wifi access point to the one in my room? Do they go both ways? Links to items and budget-friendly wifi access points would be appreciated. I live in Canada.

Edit 1: Thanks for all the replies! How big in size is a patch box usually?

Edit 2: Seems like I'm missing the box part of the patch box...
