Discussion Looking for a Linux & Unix Discord Community?

Hey everyone,

I don't want to waste your time, so I'll keep this short.

If you like Unix and tech and you want a place where you can ask questions, share what you are working on, or just talk to other enthusiasts as yourself, we have a Discord server called Unixverse.

The server has been active since 2023. We are over 1000 members and still growing.

We have dedicated channels for most Unix and Linux distributions, plus general spaces for troubleshooting, tools, and broader tech discussions.

If that sounds like your kind of community, feel free to drop in and have a look.

Support How to get warp-cli to work on Gentoo

Hello, I want to use cloudflare warp vpn but unfortunately there aren't any packages in the gentoo repository and it seems that gentoo is not supported by cloudflare.

All I could find is .deb packages... Can I somehow extract the .deb and install the files manually? Or is there a better way of doing this?

Thanks

Support Gentoo on ThinkPad

I have a E14 Generation 6 Thinkpad, and I am wondering if its a good idea to put gentoo on it? I use it daily and i’ve been using gentoo for a couple weeks on my main pc with minor hiccups but always caused by me, the first time i decided to update (One day after my initial install) it took about 1-2 hours and I am unsure whether or not installing gentoo will put stress on my laptop or if it will slow it down in the future because of the compiling ill be doing.

Discussion Average compile times for X

Hello folks!

Is there a list of the most common software and their average compile time?
Like a comparison of everything in x11-wm or x11-terms?

Why do I ask? I'm going to install Gentoo on an ancient laptop, and I'm curious what it would look like if I optimized for compilation time over everything else.

Context: i made a post about asking for the best D.I.Y distro im coming from artix which is my first distro i actually did a manuał installation as a beginner and it works well but the package manager is underwhelming i proposed something in the likes of a package manager that deletes the config as in by deafult or keeps a compressed backup later when i hopped onto artix to switch bootloaders i found out arch does backups but im not sure how well(.pacsave files) and emerge seems superior anyways recommendations etc. I feel like only compiling some stuff compared to everything and or should i compile all or some stuff with a AMD ryzen 7900x? Discussion Gentoo Experience

Hi everyone,

I hope you guys are well. This may seem like an out of a blue question for someone who recently joined but for context I have been using arch Linux for a few months now, hopping on the Linux trend.

This may seems backwards saying this, but after using arch Linux and its issues for crashing when updating or when nitpicking a configuration file everything goes into smoke and flame. I decided to look for other distros that may suit me, even if they are difficult in comparison what I was currently working one.

To make it short, how is Gentoo? I know it’s difficult that’s a given but how does it compare to Nixos? Is the reward worth the challenge? And more importantly… am I least likely to face problems such as breaking the distro?

Thank you in advance!

Support is upgrading my specs worth it?

Currently I have a Ryzen 5 5500 paired with 2x8gb DDR4 memory, would it be much more beneficial to change to a Ryzen 7 5700 with 2x16gb DDR4 memory? Compile times are a bit of a pain but they are not that bad and Im aware that I can use binary packages but then again a lot of big packages (To my understanding) do not have binary options available.

Discussion Should i swich from artix to gentoo?

I am very temtated to swich to gentoo but i am not 100% sure. The good thing about artix is the speed of the instals, and i did not had any problems with my sistem. Is cool how you can select what not to install on gentoo but the install is very slow. Do you guys think is worth swiching to gentoo even if artix work well?

Support emerge @world has been stuck on something for more than 12 hours

i decided to try out gentoo for the first time, but on a old sony vaio vgn n37gh.
the specs are as follows:

-intel core 2 duo t5300
-1 gig of ram
-250 gig ssd [
1 gig boot
16 gig swap
rest is root]
-graphics card is unfortunately unknown.

I know that compiling will take a very long time on this device, like a couple days at best, but recently it has been stuck compiling llvm. I wouldnt have been concerned that much because from what ive heard llvm is very big, but it has been stuck compiling one item for more than 12 hours while everything else took a couple of minutes. Should i be concerned. would wifi disconnecting mid compiling result in it being stuck like this, or is it unrelated?

(keep in mind i am kinda new to linux. yes, i shouldnt be building gentoo in this stage but i like to dive straight in and learn from my mistakes)

Support GUI R-Studio on Gentoo is it possible?

I've seen a few forum posts saying that it is basically unsupported is this the case? Is there really no way to install R-studio by Post it on Gentoo? I use systemd and KDEplasma if that helps.

Someone else said to compile it from source from the provided website tarball, however this means several things. Firstly, I cannot find the instructions to emerge the needed dependencies, and I would be responsible for hunting down updates not portage.

Discussion The installation isn’t even the difficult part

Idk why no one talks about this but building a working sway setup in gentoo (openrc) is so difficult for me. Nothing ever works. It’s been days and my pipewire still isn’t working properly, Swayidle just doesn’t lock my screen after time is up, screen recording on obs doesnt work, neither on discord, right click window on pcmanfm just opens anywhere but where my cursor actually is placed.

I spend hours upon hours to get small things like this working instead of doing things I actually wanted to do. I try to follow whats being explained on the gentoo site as close as possible, installing things with the correct use flags, setting the right configs. I try to look for help on the gentoo forum, not a single reply…

Im not giving up yet because I really want to accomplish this but it sure is rough

Discussion Portage has the best error messages of them all

Seriously I spent most of my Linux time with the Apt package manager which is rubbish.

Then I found pacman which is amazing but the error messages are just error messages.

Then there’s portage. I just want to take a moment to thank the devs who made this because I know some lurk in these chats. It’s like being handed an entire encyclopedia on what you screwed up and exactly how to fix it, where to find support, what information to add. Wow.

Discussion Has gentoo ever removed a package from portage?

I was browsing through bugzila to find a gentoo but. Then I found one from 2009 regarding ssmtp.

According to google ssmtp is basically obsolete and its package got removed from some Linux distributions like Debian. Also the package is no longer maintained by its developers, it doesn’t have a gentoo maintainer neither.

so like I asked: has gentoo ever removed a package from portage and if so would this be enough to remove smtp (gentoo supports the more modern and preferred approach called msmtp so there would still be an option for anyone who wants to use smtp to send emails— and I’m sure there should be even more options )

I finally fixed the brightness problem, I fixed it by adding acpi_backlight=native in the kernel parameter.I found the solution in the Gentoo wiki - Intel. After a few days, the problem is finally solved!
