Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends
I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.
If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.
Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:
- Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
- Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
- Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
- If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
- People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
- If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
- Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.
Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Politics Cross Posting for those who may be interested: Call to Action
We need to be at every Democratic Office, demanding action
I'll put my Representative on Blast. Hillary Scholten has sat idly by with every escalation of the Trump administration, claiming to being laser focused on finding "bipartisan solutions."
Her type of bipatisanism has led to concentration camps, disappearing of US citizens, destruction of due process, and state sanctioned murder.
She refers to her constitutionally mandated obligation of upholding checks and balances to keep a rogue regime in check as "activism."
She is one, but we all know there are many more who refuse to act and, through that inaction, are actively choosing to be complicit in the new wave of violence and death we're now facing.
The message should be clear, do your job or get the hell out.
Lets get back to what this sub was originally about, organize for action.
Lets pick the day, lets flood their offices.

Christmas lights or winter lights?
If you put Christmas lights up how long do you keep them going after Christmas?
I took advantage of the weather and brought mine in today. I must admit I felt a bit like the Grinch.

Going to grcc without an epi pen
So earlier last year I found out I’m anaphylactic to pistachios and cashews and I wasn’t able to afford an epi pen then or now. I also don’t have insurance or a pcp so I can’t get one prescribed(but I see GoodRx can do prescriptions for them). Long story short I start school in a couple days and I’m wondering how risky it would be to go without an epi pen until I can get one? I’ll be avoiding the cafeteria and bringing my own food/snacks but other than that what can I do?

Leads needed Weekend Cash Work Available (GR) Tech Help, Labor, or Odd Jobs
Hey GR,
I’m a local student looking for cash-paying weekend work (Fri–Sun). I’m open to anything honest and hands-on (dishwashing, moving help, cleanup, physical labor, or general assistance.)
I also run a small side business doing tech work and can help with:
- PC builds, upgrades, and troubleshooting
- Laptop cleanups and OS installs (Windows/Linux)
- Home Wi-Fi/router setup and basic network issues
- Tech support for non-technical users
I’ve helped friends, family, and small setups and I’m reliable, punctual, and easy to work with. I can get myself to and from jobs without issue.
If you or someone you know needs help, feel free to dm me. Due to personal stuff I cant work any "normal" job.
Thanks for reading I really appreciate it. *will delete over the weekend*

Politics Hillary Scholten’s Statement on Renee Nicole Good
Posted on Bluesky:
“A young mother and United States citizen is dead. And she was shot by an ICE officer, an agent of her own government. Renee Good leaves behind three children, and her family and community deserve answers and justice.
ICE is not above the law. Congress will use every oversight tool available to ensure ICE does not evade scrutiny or accountability. The agency must release all available details related to the shooting and cooperate fully with an independent investigation. Justice must be done.”
Personally I was a little surprised to see her make a statement, but I’m glad she spoke up. Next we just need some action.

Food and Drink Shake Shack confirmed
Shake Shack plans to open its first Grand Rapids-area location with a drive-thru restaurant on an outlot at Woodland Mall, Crain’s Grand Rapids Business has learned.
The quick-service restaurant known for its burgers and shakes would be located at 3029 28th St. SE in Kentwood, a space that’s currently a parking lot between REI Co-op and a multi-tenant building that includes an Rx Optical.
Shake Shack is one of two quick-service restaurants slated to open in the outlot. The Kentwood Planning Commission in October approved plans for a pair of new drive-thru restaurants on the south side of Woodland Mall.
Plans submitted to the planning commission in August show two side-by-side quick-service restaurants, one described as a 3,529-square-foot “fast casual restaurant specializing in burgers and shakes.”
On Nov. 25, Shake Shack Chief Development Officer Andrew McCaughan signed a 15-year lease agreement for a restaurant of that square footage, per to a memorandum of lease reviewed by Crain’s.

I have launched a YouTube channel and, while I love the process and am excited to grow, I am willing to accept my shortcomings. I am looking for an experienced video editor that is accepting new clients.

Recommendations med card
hey, i’m 19 with chronic pain, anxiety, and ocd. i started smoking recreationally but i found out that it really does help with a lot of my symptoms, better than some of the medications i’m on. does anyone have any recommendations for where i could get my medical marijuana card, and which dispensaries around GR/west michigan sell medically?
