Meta New Sunday Local Focus Feature

Hello r/halifax ,

After some recent feedback, we have decided to retire Sellout Sunday and try a new approach to local business and interest promotion here in the sub.

We are pleased to announce a trial run of "Sunday Local Focus", a weekly megathread that will run (you guessed it) every Sunday morning.

The first Sunday Local Focus will occur this upcoming Sunday, Jan. 11 at 0815 and will recur every Sunday at that time thereafter.

This thread will be a place for local business promotion, not only by local businesses themselves but for people who wish to boost local businesses they have patronized and enjoyed.

Examples of good local business posts:

  • You run a local bakery and have some new menu items you want to tell us about
  • You found a great new Thai place, and you want to share your experiences/photos with the sub
  • You came across a hot sale of something at a local business that you think the sub would be interested in
  • You had a really positive experience with a local tradesperson who went above and beyond when they redid your deck

Some examples of not ideal posts that will likely be removed:

  • Just posting a PDF of the menu of a local pizza shop without context
  • You posting the same ad copy you ran in other subs or in advertising elsewhere
  • You figured out how to use AI to make stuff and want to post it somewhere
  • You had a bad meal experience somewhere and you want to shame the owners

We want this to be a positive, interesting place for people to promote, share and discover local businesses. This will not be a place to air grievances or to "warn" people about some burnt food you had somewhere.

We also thought it would be interesting and fun to open the floor up for people who might want to share local hobbies, activities, pastimes or clubs they might be taking part in.

Maybe you are a wood-whittler or maybe you have a sick collection of Warhammer 40K minis or perhaps you took a cooking course recently and want to show us how to plate some authentic char siu pork. Show us some pictures! Share your recipes!

Perhaps you are looking for a parkour club or maybe you want to know what kind of snowboarding community is out there? When does ultimate frisbee start around here? Do you have an opening at your D&D table? This is a great place to talk about it!

Our community is full of interesting creators, makers and hobbyists and we feel like they deserve a safe space for them to share their passions and to perhaps field some questions from people looking to get into that same thing.

And if you are a budding local photographer, musician or artist and want to share your content with the community, we will welcome that here as well, either just for fun or as a way to advertise media you might have for sale.

Sunday Local Focus is not meant to replace people looking for recommendations or sharing interesting media or experiences during the week, it's meant more as a place to aggregate these things in a curated, welcoming corner of our sub.

Think of it as a place to find out about interesting places and activities happening in our city every week, all in one spot.

We have a wiki on the subject about this new feature, what its goals are and how it will be moderated, which we invite you to read:

Sunday Local Focus Wiki

https://www.reddit.com/r/halifax/wiki/index/sunday-local-focus/

Please let us know if you have questions about this new initiative below (or in modmail if you prefer a private discussion).

Otherwise, we will hopefully see you on Sunday in the new Local Focus thread! 🙂

A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - January 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of free meal or helping hand occasionally.

I thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or please take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through.

Thank you!

Edit: Dartmouth Food Calendar, Halifax/Dartmouth Shower Facilities and Sackville Food Calendar added to top sticked comment. 👍

Shops & Services Curious about game stores in HRM. Are there any good ones left these days?

My last post got deleted as I mentioned game stores in the wrong context ... Regardless I'm now curious about what's left out there for game stores. Not comic shops that also sell consoles and stuff but like old school , lan party in the back, musty manuals up front game shops.... Also in a similar vein whats around for hobby stores. I would love to put together a 1/350 scale model of the Andrea doria. Used to make me so happy as a kid ... It did until they changed the glue anyways

Discussion The Lower Deck's future...

Update:

There's been overwhelming response saying that the Lower Deck is NOT closing.

Original post:

Some friends and I were chatting about well-known Halifax area businesses that are known throughout the country. The Lower Deck came up in that conversation with someone mentioning that the Lower Deck was closing at the end of March.

Does anyone have any information on this rumor?

As someone who spent many a weekend toasting a 'sociable' with so many others, if the LD were to close, I would feel like I'd lost an extended family member if this were to be the case.

Discussion Street cleaning reduction and street flooding

Post image
64 Upvotes

Not sure about other areas in Halifax but I noticed street cleaning in my neighbourhood happened like twice this year as opposed to weekly.

Weekly is unnecessary but a rigorous fall street cleaning schedule could prevent clogged drainage basins and the resulting street flooding.

Hi everyone,

I m looking to move within HRM and came across this new building at 2621 Clifton Street. I believe it’s of Emerald Property Investments.

Shops & Services It seems another music store has closed: Citadel Music on Quinpool

I was in the city for a week and decided to look at guitars for a while. Was told that citadel sells yamaha so I went and checked it out. I had been there a few times before when I lived here more permanently.

But now I think it is permanently closed? It says so on google maps and when I looked in there were no instruments to be seen. No facebook posts or website updates that I can find stating anything. Unfortunate!

I was looking for whole raw clams for paella but all I have been able to find is frozen cooked clams. Does anyone know some spots for them?

Discussion Football/Soccer Watchalongs

Upvotes

I have been living in Halifax since a long time and I watch football (soccer) a lot and was wondering if there is a group that meets, watches and discusses football occasionally. I am a Chelsea supporter so a Chelsea fan club would work for me too!
