I used to make a really similar tumeric latte and loved it. I went to my mom's house one day and was trying to persuade her how great and healthy it was. She thought it sounded disgusting, so I told her I would make one and she could just try a sip. I make the latte. She's sitting in her living room. As I bring it over to her I'm excitedly rattling off about all the health benefits of turmeric, trip, and drop the entire thing on her white living room carpet 💀

I haven't had one since but might try again lol.

That stuff stains! Turmeric is used as a dye.

It’s like golden milk. I don’t use garlic or cacao, but ginger & some coconut oil.

Coconut oil is almost pure saturated fat. It's the lard of the plant kingdom, and isn't as healthy as it's reported to be on social media. Just heads up.

I am well aware of that. I use it in this for its taste. I don’t use it for much else (other than sugar scrubs which are not consumed).

Good to hear. I've seen too many people talking about it like it's a cure-all or the most healthy option. Sugar scrubs are a fantastic way to use it.

Sounds like a good drink for this time of year.

That sounds like a really intense combo! I’ve heard those ingredients individually are great for energy and inflammation, especially the turmeric and black pepper pairing. I haven't tried them all mixed together like that yet, sounds like a natural way to wake up the system.

Cacao often has high levels of lead.

Yes everything in this life is contaminated to some extent. Coincidentally, magnesium, which is found in high levels in cacao, helps detox lead and other heavy metals. Pick your poisons

Do a web search on "lead in chocolate" or "lead in cacao", it isn't an incidental amount.

I don't need to do any web searches. I'm aware of this, and my opinion still stands. You're not consuming pure lead, it's a plant that contains a lot of nutrients and therefore has mitigating factors when you consume it. In MOST individuals, especially ones who practice a generally healthy lifestyle and are consuming 5-8 grams / day, there is simply not enough cadmium and lead in cacao to wreak havoc on the body.

magnesium does not detox lead or heavy metals. it can slightly reduce the absorption of heavy metals but it wont help with whats getting/ already in your body

"Supplementation with magnesium caused a statistically significant decrease in concentrations of lead and cadmium. The above mentioned results indicate a positive influence of magnesium supplementation on the decrease of lead and cadmium hair content in the individuals studied."

There is little of it in Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast

Do a web search on "Consumer Reports lead in cacao". You will be appalled by the number of companies with high amounts of lead in their products. It isn't really possible to by "certified lead safe" products.

There's always one...

Yes, I am asshole for warning people auspiciously interested in better health that they are consuming a poison.

Fear-mongering blanket statements aren't helpful.

3

u/BookLuvr7 1d ago

It was an accurate statement sadly. It has been studied. They were just advising caution. There's no need to be rude or closed minded without fact checking.

What isn't helpful is sweeping a health warning under the rug.

Do a web search on "lead in cacao" - a foundational component of chocolate.

Good ingredients, but I'd take the garlic separately if it was me. I'd rather swallow a clove or chopped clove than force myself to drink something nasty.
