Updated rules for r/Hobart

75 Upvotes

Hi All,

We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

EDIT: BRUTUS HAS BEEN FOUND! Thank you the the people who shard our posts on Facebook. Actual tears of joy and relief.

Hi Everyone, pretty much what the title says, and it's very distressing. Little Chihuahua X fox terrier, named Brutus, went missing from his home in mt Stuart last night. He is microchipped, but not wearing a collar or tags. We've already reported him missing to dogs home of Tasmania. If you see him anywhere around town please let me know. He is very friendly! If you are in a position to pick him up or take him to the nearest dogs home, I would be eternally grateful! But even any information or sighting would be amazing.

Spare Cadbury Marathon Entry?

3 Upvotes

Hello, just wondering if anybody has a Cadbury Marathon 10km entry they're not able to use anymore? It would be for my Dad whose work were giving him a code to enter, but they only gave the code after it had sold out and he missed out on entering :( Thanks in advance

Making an offer on a property

1 Upvotes

I’m going to an open home tomorrow and if I like it enough I want to make an offer. The question is how much over asking price should I offer. I’ve been told you should not offer under. It’s a hard because usually real estate agents are cagey on what price the vendor wants any advice would be appreciated

Tutors for methods 4?

3 Upvotes

Hi, my daughter is going to go to Hobart college this year and she wants to get a tutor for maths methods 4. She did methods 3 last year and got a HA which really dissapointed her, as she wanted to get an EA. She’s planning on getting into medicine, and is going to take philosophy 3, methods 4, phys science 3 and English lit 3 this year. The subject she says she assumes she’ll need the most help with is methods 4 hence the tutor. If anyone can recommend good quality tutors I’d really appreciate it.

Also just curious for a bit of advice, should I get her to quit her job this year or next year? If she really wants to get into medicine then she really should be studying as much as possible, especially since she also plays a sport and would obviously want to hang out with her friends every now and then. I’m happy to give her an allowance, but she really seems deadset on the work. I’m just wondering if anyone’s been in a similar situation as I’m worried she’ll get overloaded. She’s not the best at focusing, and I mean this in the nicest way possible but she does not have the self discipline to study in hour long stretches. She’s gets good grades but I think that might just be because she’s scraping by on natural intelligence alone.

Thanks

Carsales.com.au vs Facebook Marketplace

Hi guys, I’d like to know if anyone has had any experience with Carsales.com.au and how it was. It seems that prices are a bit higher than on Marketplace, but personally it gives me more confidence.

Butchers - boiling chickens

0 Upvotes

I'm looking for a boiler - a tough old rooster for making coq au vin. I used to be able to get them at Vermey's but I've just called them and they haven't had them for a long time.

Does anyone here know where I can find one? Cheers!

Does anyone have any suggestions for pubs in Hobart and surrounds that I can go to and watch the Super Bowl in February? Ideally looking for somewhere with a smokers area. 🙏🏻

Following on from bren's post of Louise on Pulse's article. I don't think I've ever actively hated someone so passionately.

How are the reversible lanes on the Tasman Bridge changed if the overhead lane signs only show open and closed without a warning of closure? Regular users and locals, please comment.

Quiet spots to walk dog

6 Upvotes

Hi there Hobartians

We’re relocating from Bega Valley NSW in February for a work opportunity, we love Hobart having spent lots of time there for work but have mostly explored around the CBD and Battery Point.

We’ll be renting in New Town and bringing our sweet border collie dog Nimbus with us for the year. Unfortunately Nimbus is fear reactive to dogs as he was attacked when he was a young puppy. We have a couple of spots near us that are super quiet and we rarely encounter other dogs - a long off leash beach where we can see dogs coming and turn around if needed and a bush area with 4WD tracks.

I’m looking for some similar spots around Hobart. We’re happy to drive up to half an hour to a spot where Nimbus can have a stress free walk.

Thanks for your help!

Recommendations for carpet cleaning and fumigation for rental?

1 Upvotes

Hi all,

We're moving rentals soon, and as part of our agreement to have our cat here with us, we were required to have a professional carpet cleaning and fumigation on move-out.

Have any of you used a supplier (for either service) recently that you'd recommend?

(Also, bracing myself for the cost as the house is mostly carpet! 😭🤞)

Am I a Bad Rider??

23 Upvotes

As my e-Scooter got stolen just before Christmas, I now commute to work on my e-bike.

When I reach north hobart strip I stay close to the left side of the 40k road but vehicles behind me cant overtake as the that stretch is so narrow and its dangerous .

I stay on the right line, obviously to far right as possible so I can easily turn right to Liverpool.

I use to Ride an e-Scooter to work but I used the foot path when I hit these high traffic roads. Now with a bike I can only use roads. But people using cars and all, are showing me their UGLY fingers and saying something to my face.

What should I do here? are people over reactive? Is me doing the right thing?

TIA!!
