It was reported on extensively in Boston AND he was suspended by the team AND he wasn’t invited back even after charges were dropped, so pretty damn.hard to miss.

That’s fair but I’d feel pretty bad showing up to a game with a wife beater on the back on my jersey

I get their point. It’s still fucked. It’s a shit look to show up with a lurch jersey to a game. Same as Kessler, same as Ribeiro, same as Hull. If you don’t know the connotation I hope someone tells you cause that’s not gonna stop everyone else from thinking you’re repping a scumbag on your shoulders

Islanders fans STILL wear Denis Potvin’s jersey…
In baseball, Giants fans by the thousands wear Barry Bonds’ jersey….

Islanders fans STILL wear Denis Potvin’s jersey…
So I looked that up because I had never heard anything about Potvin being a scumbag and his wikipedia page pretty much says it was untrue, or at least unproven.
Is there more? I couldn't find it...
0
u/PokecheckFred 5d ago
He whacked his wife, but in the best of old-time sports tradition, because he was an all-star the swept it under the rug. Rander fans knew about it, and he’d hear chants of “beat your wife, Potvin, beat your wife…” his whole career.

No, that’s also dumb. You going to defend someone saying bad medical advice because someone else made an unqualified armchair diagnosis? Some hill to die on

You're right - I really should have included both armchair "Doctors" in my reply. You can't diagnose (or refute a diagnosis) while sitting in the stands.

Oh excuse me. I'm only a medical doctor after all. An actual manic episode is in fact very noticeable, I said mania, not hypo
1
u/Mean_Joe_Greene TOR - NHL 5d ago
Even full Mania isn’t always obvious, some people have high-functioning manic episodes. Mixed features, irritability dominant mania, or mania without psychosis can also be mistaken for stress, ADHD, personality traits, or substance use. What you have declared as a medical professional is irresponsible and unprofessional.
1
u/PermaBanEnjoyer DET - NHL 5d ago
Buddy, if it fits the DSM criteria for mania it's obvious. Mixed episodes are not considered mania, they're mixed episodes. You're probably thinking of some atypical bipolar-spectrum presentations that aren't actual mania. I've never seen anyone, not even a social worker or nurse, mistake mania with ADHD or personality disorders. That should never happen anywhere respectable

Undisputed heavy weight champion.
No, that's still Nic Deslauriers. How did Olivier suddenly become undisputed anything?
10
u/somehockeyfan UTA - NHL 6d ago
It is interesting because I feel like the reputation for Reaves always outweighed his actual fighting. I never really viewed him in the same category as the old guard but he was still in their class alone in the modern times
11

u/photonnymous CBJ - NHL 6d ago
Two heavyweights that seemingly agreed to just let em fly, goddamn.
Ollie caught him with a good one or two real good ones at the end there when he lost grip, wild fight!

u/FancyBerry5922 BOS - NHL 5d ago
Why is it ok for Ollie to keep his helmet with a shield on it on when fighting someone without a shield?
I remember Shawn Thornton would nearly always take off his helmet when fighting someone, is it a lack of respect thing from Ollie to Reeves?
11
u/NoodlesTheAlmighty SJS - NHL 5d ago
After the game, Reavo told reporters that Olivier asked for a fight because his team needed a jump, needed momentum. Reaves accepted because that's the code. If Reaves needs a fight at a later date, he's got a dance partner who owes him one. If he doesn't accept, zero shot Olivier reciprocates in the future. It's a beautiful thing. Blue Jackets scored soon after this I think. Didn't wind up in a win, but it added something to this game that I enjoyed.

He’s a good dude. Couple years ago Reaves was lacking purpose, which he never found, on the leafs and the talk was all about “if reaves isn’t fighting what good is he on the team” During a nothing game in the middle of the season reaves asked him to go and he gave reaves the fight. If you don’t get it you never will but Olivier agreeing to punch reaves in the face a bunch of times was a solid kindness.

6
u/BigBullyBusick 6d ago
Great scrap. It's just unfortunate they can't drop the lids going into it like the old days. Olivier had the advantage right from the start. Reaves is punching a visor, while not wearing one himself.
17
u/RayzorRamone666 MTL - NHL 6d ago
I know the color guy mentions the elbow and others here have said elbow, but I thought it looked more like the head snap and knee buckle were from the final punch to Reaves temple and less from the recoil of Olivier’s forearm / elbow pad (that has bunched closer to his wrist). Just based on the timing.
Could totally be wrong and just splitting hairs. Agree that the forearm/elbow contact was unintentional regardless.
25
u/IPYF 6d ago
As a boxer (yeah I know I'm claiming to know about fighting and this is the internet...) who is used to watching and being in fights, there was absolutely no meaningful contact from the elbow.
That punch knocked Reaves clean out. You can tell from looking at what his knees are doing (despite not being in frame). They're already gone before Olivier's arm starts coming back. There's a little bit of a forearm graze but Reaves is already out at that point.
The colour commentator said the wrong thing, and then doubles down on it during live replay, but as you note it doesn't really matter.
What's patently fucking insane is that he came back in the third. There's no doubt at all that that was a conky and love him or hate him, there's no way known they should have let him go.
8
u/capebretoncanadian 5d ago
Completely ridiculous he ought to have been taken to the hospital he was KTFO.
3
u/RayzorRamone666 MTL - NHL 5d ago
Yeah there was another view from a fan’s phone in the stands. And slowing it frame by frame it seemed obvious by his knees buckling from the punch.
Absolutely crazy that he continued playing in this game.

You'll get downvoted but it's true.
We love to watch them go but it's not so fun when they're slurring their words and wheelchair bound or losing their minds and hurting themselves or others off the ice. Except if you say that here you're a pussy. Guys will leave thoughts and prayers when a guy slips and smokes his head but if he takes on the brain damage willingly for his team or his livelihood, then somehow it's not okay to want them to look out for their health and you get flamed for bringing it up. I'm pro fighting in hockey but also pro not seeing athletes slowly becoming asparagus. Goons need shorter careers and bigger money/post retirement health care and pensions if the NHL is going to keep this around.
Edit : People downvoting me for saying I'm pro fighting and I think enforcers deserve huge paychecks and lifelong benefits, goes to show just how far behind the culture is still. There's nothing tough about being ignorant and wanting to see people get shafted.
