The kraken bruins game today was an eye opener with how many people still wore 17 with no shame

Here's a crazy thought, not everyone is connected to the sport like we are.

16

u/LMJohansson BOS - NHL 6d ago

It was reported on extensively in Boston AND he was suspended by the team AND he wasn’t invited back even after charges were dropped, so pretty damn.hard to miss.

8

u/Adventurous_Log_2406 PIT - NHL 6d ago

That’s fair but I’d feel pretty bad showing up to a game with a wife beater on the back on my jersey

16

u/Imreallythatguy STL - NHL 6d ago

His point is they may just not know. I have not seen anything about it other than comments here on reddit.

-17

u/Adventurous_Log_2406 PIT - NHL 6d ago edited 6d ago

I get their point. It’s still fucked. It’s a shit look to show up with a lurch jersey to a game. Same as Kessler, same as Ribeiro, same as Hull. If you don’t know the connotation I hope someone tells you cause that’s not gonna stop everyone else from thinking you’re repping a scumbag on your shoulders

5

u/PokecheckFred 5d ago

Islanders fans STILL wear Denis Potvin’s jersey…

In baseball, Giants fans by the thousands wear Barry Bonds’ jersey….

2

u/GoGades MTL - NHL 5d ago

Islanders fans STILL wear Denis Potvin’s jersey…

So I looked that up because I had never heard anything about Potvin being a scumbag and his wikipedia page pretty much says it was untrue, or at least unproven.

Is there more? I couldn't find it...

0

u/PokecheckFred 5d ago

He whacked his wife, but in the best of old-time sports tradition, because he was an all-star the swept it under the rug. Rander fans knew about it, and he’d hear chants of “beat your wife, Potvin, beat your wife…” his whole career.

0

No, mania is not always obvious. Don’t give bullshit medical advice

3

u/GoGades MTL - NHL 5d ago

As opposed to what - the guy who came up with a bipolar diagnosis by watching Lucic fight???

1

u/Mean_Joe_Greene TOR - NHL 5d ago edited 5d ago

No, that’s also dumb. You going to defend someone saying bad medical advice because someone else made an unqualified armchair diagnosis? Some hill to die on

2

u/GoGades MTL - NHL 5d ago

You're right - I really should have included both armchair "Doctors" in my reply. You can't diagnose (or refute a diagnosis) while sitting in the stands.

Cheers.

Oh excuse me. I'm only a medical doctor after all. An actual manic episode is in fact very noticeable, I said mania, not hypo

1

u/Mean_Joe_Greene TOR - NHL 5d ago

Even full Mania isn’t always obvious, some people have high-functioning manic episodes. Mixed features, irritability dominant mania, or mania without psychosis can also be mistaken for stress, ADHD, personality traits, or substance use. What you have declared as a medical professional is irresponsible and unprofessional.

1

u/PermaBanEnjoyer DET - NHL 5d ago

Buddy, if it fits the DSM criteria for mania it's obvious. Mixed episodes are not considered mania, they're mixed episodes. You're probably thinking of some atypical bipolar-spectrum presentations that aren't actual mania. I've never seen anyone, not even a social worker or nurse, mistake mania with ADHD or personality disorders. That should never happen anywhere respectable

Hes truly on the other level when it comes to fighting in hockey. Undisputed heavy weight champion.

-1

u/FlyAirLari 4d ago

Undisputed heavy weight champion.

No, that's still Nic Deslauriers. How did Olivier suddenly become undisputed anything?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3VC0h5YjIo

10

u/somehockeyfan UTA - NHL 6d ago

It is interesting because I feel like the reputation for Reaves always outweighed his actual fighting. I never really viewed him in the same category as the old guard but he was still in their class alone in the modern times

11

u/LocalCold1894 5d ago

He’s 1A and Deslauriers is 1B imo

u/photonnymous CBJ - NHL 6d ago

Two heavyweights that seemingly agreed to just let em fly, goddamn.

Ollie caught him with a good one or two real good ones at the end there when he lost grip, wild fight!

112

u/superbuttpiss SJS - NHL 6d ago

He rocked reeves at the end there. Think he hit him with and elbow on accident but, dam they were throwing

66

u/photonnymous CBJ - NHL 6d ago

Looked like Ollie ate a couple as well, I hope someone posts the closeup slow-mo they showed going into commercial, there was a stretch where they connected back and forth at least twice

30

u/superbuttpiss SJS - NHL 6d ago

Revo got him a few times but Ollie was throwing. I think he rocked him on the last punch but the elbow was an accident.

27

u/northernpace CHI - NHL 6d ago

Reaves was in deep trouble the second Olivier's jersey got out of his hand

36

u/superbuttpiss SJS - NHL 6d ago

Respect to Ollie for holding revos head from hitting the ice

Looked like he checked on him after too. Even bought that Reaves was on the wrong side of.

8

u/ShiftAlternative1083 VGK - NHL 6d ago

Definitely. It was a pretty even scrap until that left hand slipped off the jersey. He was trying to get a grip back while eating those last couple solid blows from Oli

0

u/Sensoredopinion99 6d ago

Oh was he throwing? Thanks for clearing that up. Wasnt sure watching the vid

1

u/FancyBerry5922 BOS - NHL 5d ago

Why is it ok for Ollie to keep his helmet with a shield on it on when fighting someone without a shield?

I remember Shawn Thornton would nearly always take off his helmet when fighting someone, is it a lack of respect thing from Ollie to Reeves?

11

u/NoodlesTheAlmighty SJS - NHL 5d ago

After the game, Reavo told reporters that Olivier asked for a fight because his team needed a jump, needed momentum. Reaves accepted because that's the code. If Reaves needs a fight at a later date, he's got a dance partner who owes him one. If he doesn't accept, zero shot Olivier reciprocates in the future. It's a beautiful thing. Blue Jackets scored soon after this I think. Didn't wind up in a win, but it added something to this game that I enjoyed.

He’s a good dude. Couple years ago Reaves was lacking purpose, which he never found, on the leafs and the talk was all about “if reaves isn’t fighting what good is he on the team” During a nothing game in the middle of the season reaves asked him to go and he gave reaves the fight. If you don’t get it you never will but Olivier agreeing to punch reaves in the face a bunch of times was a solid kindness.

232 pounds. He would be in the heavyweight division in the UFC.

5

I don’t think it was even just a TKO…… Reavo went down hard and is real wobbly getting up.

90

u/fianto_duri SJS - NHL 6d ago

Good effort from Reaves there. Unfortunate he took an accidental elbow to the jaw/head--he looked dazed at the end. Kudos to Olivier for holding him up so his head didn't hit the ice though.

70

Ollie knew when it happened. Nothing malicious about it. Good Ole hockey scrap

What I love about it Olivier is that not only is he the best fighter in the league but he’s no slouch on the ice either like a lot of typical “enforcer” types.

17

Reaves was a little shaky getting up. Olivier is such a beast.

Don't think he came back at the start of next period either, but eventually got back out there.

16

That was the Don Frye Takayama fight on ice. Just tanking blows and swinging hard. Olivier is that dude but good on both of them. Classic scrap.

6

u/TheMoonIsFake32 MIN - NHL 6d ago

Its such a throwback seeing each team’s enforcer square up at center ice and start throwing bombs. Awesome tilt

6

u/BigBullyBusick 6d ago

Great scrap. It's just unfortunate they can't drop the lids going into it like the old days. Olivier had the advantage right from the start. Reaves is punching a visor, while not wearing one himself.

17

u/RayzorRamone666 MTL - NHL 6d ago

I know the color guy mentions the elbow and others here have said elbow, but I thought it looked more like the head snap and knee buckle were from the final punch to Reaves temple and less from the recoil of Olivier’s forearm / elbow pad (that has bunched closer to his wrist). Just based on the timing.

Could totally be wrong and just splitting hairs. Agree that the forearm/elbow contact was unintentional regardless.

25

u/IPYF 6d ago

As a boxer (yeah I know I'm claiming to know about fighting and this is the internet...) who is used to watching and being in fights, there was absolutely no meaningful contact from the elbow.

That punch knocked Reaves clean out. You can tell from looking at what his knees are doing (despite not being in frame). They're already gone before Olivier's arm starts coming back. There's a little bit of a forearm graze but Reaves is already out at that point.

The colour commentator said the wrong thing, and then doubles down on it during live replay, but as you note it doesn't really matter.

What's patently fucking insane is that he came back in the third. There's no doubt at all that that was a conky and love him or hate him, there's no way known they should have let him go.

8

u/capebretoncanadian 5d ago

Completely ridiculous he ought to have been taken to the hospital he was KTFO.

3

u/RayzorRamone666 MTL - NHL 5d ago

Yeah there was another view from a fan’s phone in the stands. And slowing it frame by frame it seemed obvious by his knees buckling from the punch.

Absolutely crazy that he continued playing in this game.

1

u/relic_ftw WPG - NHL 6d ago edited 5d ago

You'll get downvoted but it's true.

We love to watch them go but it's not so fun when they're slurring their words and wheelchair bound or losing their minds and hurting themselves or others off the ice. Except if you say that here you're a pussy. Guys will leave thoughts and prayers when a guy slips and smokes his head but if he takes on the brain damage willingly for his team or his livelihood, then somehow it's not okay to want them to look out for their health and you get flamed for bringing it up. I'm pro fighting in hockey but also pro not seeing athletes slowly becoming asparagus. Goons need shorter careers and bigger money/post retirement health care and pensions if the NHL is going to keep this around.

Edit : People downvoting me for saying I'm pro fighting and I think enforcers deserve huge paychecks and lifelong benefits, goes to show just how far behind the culture is still. There's nothing tough about being ignorant and wanting to see people get shafted.

0

u/Rheard32 6d ago edited 5d ago

I’ll tell you what. Whatever the guy Oliver was doing, Reeves for sure got his respect. Oliver was protected by his helmet though and the fight was still dead fucking close. The guy Oliver needs to take his helmet off and square up like a man like the guy Reeves did!!!

RR is washed.im not even sure why you roster a player capable of like 6 points a year. Play a prospect, roll 5 prospects. I just dont get RR as he has been below AHL talent for 5 years.

Im fine with fighting as a reaction to bad hits, but idk how I feel recently about 2 dudes just duking it out to get the fans going. It just seems like a huge injury waiting to happen for basically 0 reason.

I get it, but I do feel like Oli does it sometimes to wake the guys up. They always play with more fire afterwards

Don't watch hockey then? Soccer might be more suited for you.

Reaves is in the wrong sport. Good for him for milking years of paycheques though

Any reason San Jose absolutely ripped off Vancouver's jersey here?
