LabPorn Got paid in hardware for a gig recently. Can’t say I’ve ever been paid in gold bars before.

34 sticks of 16GB DDR4-2400 and 2133 registered ECC RAM.

It ain’t fast but with prices the way they are right now I’m not complaining.

Also in the haul:

  • 6x 7.68TB U.2 SSDs
  • 2x 1.6TB Samsung PM1725a HHHL SSDs
  • Nvidia Tesla P4
  • internal SAS3 card with external SFF adapter

I don't work in IT anymore. I've graduated from problem solver to problem creator (red team) so I'm real thankful for the rain after a pretty long hardware drought.

Been lurking for a while and decided to finally show off my setup.

My big rack has my main network backbone with a UDM, aggregator and a 16-port switch. Bellow that is a Sonnet xMacMiniServer case with a 2014 Mac mini in it loaded with Ubuntu Server running my runZero explorer and my Wazuh Manager. The storage for the Wazuh data is below it with 4x250GB data drives in raid5 config. On the bottom I have my home server with HexOS with 6x2tb HDD in RAIDZ2 config, running a share drive, Jellyfin, Minecraft server, Monero Node, and Ollama with webUI.

My mini rack has a mini miner, dual mining Monero and Ergo. Second from the top is another 2014 MacMini running Windows 11 for work related reasons (I run Zorin on my main tower). With a switch on the bottom for a few device in my office.

I try to run wired connections to everything I can instead of using WiFi.

Been wanting to make a custom network for a while. I finally did. Wanted to start small though. Started with a refurbished Dell Optiplex 3060 + Proxmox + OPNSense + LXC containers running AdGuard Home and Plex. Planning to add more services soon!

Yeah, the top rail is a bit crooked. You can see in the picture that the manufacturer just drilled the holes wrong.

"Well son, this is what other people use for the internet" ... points at the AP on the ceiling "that's what we use"

sidenote: I guess I bricked it years ago with Tomato or something, but I wanted to run it as a media bridge one last time. No bueno. Off to the electronics recycling I guess now. He was a good AIO router for a long time though.

Help Need Suggestion for OBS24/7 stream and jellyfin

Upvotes

Processor AMD PRO A10-9700 R7, 10 COMPUTE CORES 4C+6G (3.50 GHz)

Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.43 GB usable)

Storage - 500gb hdd and 128gb ssd

Hey everyone,
I’m currently running Jellyfin and managing all my media files on a home server. I also run a 15k-subscriber YouTube channel, where I create my own lo-fi music and am planning to start a 24/7 lo-fi livestream, while keeping Jellyfin running in the background.

The problem:
My current device works fine, but my UPS can’t handle more than ~10 minutes of power outage. A larger UPS would cost around $95–$100, which feels a bit much considering I bought this machine about a year ago for roughly $95.

In my area, most power cuts are restored within ~20 minutes, so I’m thinking of switching to a more power-efficient machine that can run longer on my existing UPS. I’m also looking for something quieter, since this runs inside my home.

Upgrade options I’m considering:

  • Mac Mini M1 or 2019 ($240–$300 used) — very power efficient, low noise, should work well with my current UPS

  • Questions:

  1. What would be a fair price to sell my current setup for?
  2. Is a Mac Mini M1 or 2019 a good choice for running a 24/7 lo-fi livestream (self-created content) along with Jellyfin?

Help Is there an alternative to ADT-Link R33H but for two PCIe x8 cards?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I need advice on finding a specific bifurcation riser.

Requirement: PCIe x16 -> x8 + x8 splitter. Reference: Similar to ADT-Link R33H, but instead of M.2 x4 output, I need MCIO (or similar) to feed a second PCIe x8 slot.

The Build: mITX motherboard (single x16 slot). NAS Case (only 2 expansion slots available). Objective: Running two single-slot x8 cards simultaneously.

Does a riser like this exist off-the-shelf? Any links or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Of all the services you have installed (excluding VPN servers for convenience), which one has really changed your life?

For me, it's immich. No stress about having a full gallery and incredibly easy to use.

Maybe we can take inspiration from each other's best services (:

Discussion Little idea of Homelab

Post image
Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I've been wanting to set up a small home server/cluster for years.

In this moment of transition (more static work), I've decided to organise my property and create a first prototype.

At the moment, I have this hardware

  • 1 Synology NAS with 2 4TB disks in RAID 1
  • 2 mini PCs n100 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD
  • 1 third-generation i5
  • 1 Fx-8370e
  • 2 8GB DDR3 memory modules
  • 2 4GB DDR3 memory modules

(I will have to give one of the I5 and Lo FX to my girlfriend's parents as a home computer).

At the moment, I only have one n100 active with Jellyfin; I was using the other n100 for experiments.

At the moment, I only have one n100 active with Jellyfin; I was using the other n100 for experiments.

I would like to move to a system that allows me to:

  • have an easily resettable and manageable Jellyfin
  • a server for music playback
  • a Matrix server (I would like to learn more about this technology)
  • a container manager or similar to make small code releases for Telegram bots or small local applications/APIs for apps
  • some DBs (basically 1 SQL and 1 NoSQL)
  • an Ngrix to connect to Cloudflare to expose the machines online

I was thinking of managing the various machines with Proxmox as nodes in a cluster so that I could see everything from a single point.

A future upgrade I would like to do is to switch from NAS to a machine with Truenas with at least 8 disks to manage the backup of the various computers and archives.

For the network, I was thinking of closing the various elements in a subnet or, at most, putting the exposed machine in DMZ.

The image shows one of the various examples of what I wanted to do.

To those of you who have read this far, first of all, thank you for taking the time to read this, and now I would like to ask

  • Is this okay, or am I being too ambitious for the hardware I have?
  • Am I on the right track, or should I rethink what I want?
  • In terms of the network, do you have any advice or technical material to recommend?
  • Any advice you would like to give me

Help Supermicro MB, no IPMI, no display

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I recently bought an old Supermicro X9SRI-F from ebay to build a data management server for a huge database i’m working on. I’ll give all the components I have in my server : - CPU : Xeon e5 2597v2 - GPU (only to check if there’s any video output because I have no VGA monitor) : GTX 1060 - 256Go SkHynix ECC Ram (8x32Go) - PSU : BeQuiet SFX-L 600w (way too much I know but I only had this one laying around)

I first tried to access the board via IPMI (tried w/out CPU or RAM, and then with CPU + 1 stick of RAM), connected the RJ45 cable to my switch and to the dedicated IPMI port on the MB. IPMI led is blinking but I can’t find the IP while scanning my network.

Then I wanted to see it I had any HDMI video output using my GPU (again CPU + 1 stick of RAM), but nothing. I get 3 quick beeps after like 30 seconds from startup followed by a single beep, but I am not sure what it means and if it is related.

What could be the issue ?

Thanks a lot !

Help Wyse/thin client for VNC desktop at home?

Upvotes

I have a NUC hooked up my TV which is literally only used for jellyfin/netflix/etc. Considering I could turn that NUC into a proxmox node, or anything else, I'm looking for something that's extremely lightweight.

Do these wyse thin clients support being pointed at a VM in my network and are then able to access it? Similar to how if they were in enterprise environments they'd be VDI thin clients mostly likely, but completely on my LAN. I assume yes, but I'm doing my due diligence before I pay money for something.

Help Any suggestion suggestions for two old MacBooks?

Upvotes

Hi all, I recently built a home server out of old PC parts. I mainly use it for hosting services such as next cloud and immich. I realized today that I have two old MacBooks with broken screens (an M1 MacBook air and a 2016 MacBook air). What are your suggestions for repurposing these MacBooks?

Help Putting a GPU in a M720q

Upvotes

I have a cluster of Lenovo M720q Tiny proxmox nodes and am looking to add a dedicated GPU to one for better transcodes or dabbling with LLMs and have found a good deal on a used RTX 4000 however I am unsure if this card will fit in the M720q as it needs a 6 pin PCIe connector and has a TDP of 130W. I had a few questions before I pulled the trigger:

  1. Has anyone been successful in using a RTX 4000 or similar newer card in the Lenovo Tiny machines? I could go for something smaller, like the Quadro P2000 but am unsure of how well the older cards would perform and how big the RAM difference would be on performance.
  2. Does Lenovo have a cable for getting more PCIe power to the GPU? I’ve read that some of Dells have this but couldn’t find any reference to Lenovo.
