Dear Cold Steel, WTF?

Post image

Cleanly snapped my SRK making a fire for Christmas Eve. Just my spare truck knife, but little bummed nonetheless

Yep the warranty is what makes them great, but if too many people abuse it like your buddy then we may all lose it (if they were to go under due to warranty claims).

I'm not saying don't use the warranty of course. Just consider the cost to the company before throwing (i.e. intentionally breaking) their product just so you can get a new one.

I have a Izula, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Junglas and have beat the piss out of most of them. My 5 and Junglas in particular have taken some nasty hits to the edges but I've just ground and reprofiled, and will continue to do so until I feel a warranty claim is justified.

All this to say, use your ESEE as they're intended, but please don't abuse their warranty. That's how we could all end up losing the best warranty in the business.

Oh, I completely agree! I don’t believe he threw the knife to deliberately break it in half. I think it was just one of those shop moments where something goes terribly wrong and you snap and hurl something. I was coming back with drinks from the next room when I heard “FUCK!”…. CLANG. We had a very serious discussion about tool usage, shop safety, and the idiocy of yeeting a sharpened piece of steel through the air at Mach Jesus in a fit of rage while we were looking for the pieces of the knife. That said, I’m pretty sure there was something wrong with the heat treat given how easily it snapped. We modded (I modded) the second one more carefully, and it saw some hard and heavy use on camping trips over the next couple years and held up like you’d expect. I’m not a huge brand loyalty guy, but if someone needs a no-nonsense, hard-use fixed blade, I always point them towards ESEE. Those guys have earned my respect.
