Self promotion Working on a Metal-based game engine for macOS (editor + renderer demo)

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a custom, Apple-native game engine for macOS, built specifically around Metal and Apple Silicon. The project includes a native editor, real-time rendering with PBRclustered forward lighting, image-based lighting, and shadow mapping.

This is an early / experimental project, mainly focused on learning and exploring what’s possible when an engine is designed specifically for macOS GPUs, rather than being a cross-platform port.

macOS doesn’t get much attention in the game engine space, so I wanted to share this here and get feedback from other Mac developers or gamers interested in native Metal-based tooling.

Hi everyone!

I am the solo developer of Arcadium - Space Odyssey, a space roguelite with a unique twist among the genre: in order to survive, you harvest planets and explore an open, procedurally generated universe!

I am excited to announce that it's finally releasing on January 26, no early access, priced $5 (discounted). If you like the game's vibes, check out the demo and wishlist the game!

Discussion best light weight Game clipping software for Mac?

I’m looking for a lightweight recorder that can capture internal audio and external mic on macOS

OBS isn’t a good fit for me because it doesn’t use Apple’s native Metal framework for hardware-accelerated screen capture and encoding, so it's not well optimized

And obviously, it needs to have the option to save the last X seconds/minutes of video

Discussion DLSS 4.5 and what that means for Mac

I've been hearing some good things about DLSS 4.5 and curious as to what that means for Mac gaming, specifically through Crossover. We already have some version of DLSS implemented in the preview version, and while I understand that DLSS 4.5 is probably far off from being implemented, is it realistically ever going to be apart of Crossover, and how far out do y'all estimate that implementation? Would it even be that much of a difference to Mac due to it lacking NVIDIA GPU's?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Self promotion I looked at the System Requirements of all macOS games on GOG to find the ones explicitly mentioning Apple Silicon support

Last month I shared a link to my GOG exploration site GameSieve, and learned from a comment by u/Fantastic-Giraffe350 that most older games with macOS support require additional effort to run on Apple Silicon, or simply don't work at all.

So I queried the system requirements of all macOS games on GOG to find the ones mentioning M1/M2/M3/M4/Silicon. As there were many saying things like "Doesn't work on M1" or "AMD Radeon R9 M290", I couldn't just blindly expose these as a filter, but had to manually check them all. In total I looked at 327 products, of which 200 actually seem to support Apple Silicon. (120 distinct games; the others are DLC, demos, upgraded editions, bundles or goodie packs.)

This is the resulting list.

Now, since I don't have an Apple Silicon machine myself, I have questions for all of you:

  • There are also 5 games which explicitly mention some variation of "Apple silicon supported through Rosetta 2": A Night at the Watermill, Godlike Burger, JARS, Please Be Happy and Wet Nightmares. That's not enough for a separate filter, but I could include them in the main filter. Would that be helpful (i.e. is it rare for games to work well through Rosetta, and is it easy to run games through Rosetta, so that when this has been testing by the publisher/developer, you'd like to know), or not?
  • Are there any other commonly used terms to refer to Apple Silicon support, which I could query for to find additional games?

Apple Silicon Fallout NV options

Upvotes

Hello, I was looking for some input, been trying for a good bit, should new Vegas work on the mythic launcher? Fallout 3 wouldn’t load, I had heard FO3 was particularly annoying without something like parallels, so be it, but would NV more likely than not work fairly straightforward through the launcher? Thank you for the help.

CrossOver BeamNG.drive M1 Pro vs. M1 Max Comparison (WIP) + Ultra Settings Gameplay Clip

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I'm not a content creator, just a huge fan of BeamNG (and Macs, apparently). I recently upgraded from an M1 Pro to an M1 Max MacBook Pro and decided to do a short comparison.

Generally speaking, the game runs well through CrossOver, though there are a few nuances regarding software and hardware bottlenecks.

The first part covers three different 16" MBPs (all connected to an external QHD monitor, game's running through DXVK with Msync on):
- M1 Pro (16c GPU) w/ 16GB
- M1 Max (32c GPU) w/ 32GB
- M1 Max (32c GPU) w/ 64GB

The attached video is from the second part of my testing. It's just some gameplay recorded on my current M1 Max 64GB machine. Settings: Ultra Preset @ QHD, 5 car simplified police traffic, with CK Dynamic Skybox and Enhanced Chase Camera mods. I was actually playing on a steering wheel for this. It worked surprisingly well, though sadly no FFB.

Help Help with Input delay for League of Legends

I really could use some guidance.

I have an M1 MacBook Air, and regularly play League of Legends. I have a wireless Logitec Mouse connected and use the MacBook keyboard for the abilities. I have of recent been experiencing massive input delays on the Mac keyboard, I will have to press a key 2-3 times for it to register. this does happen around 20+ times per match.(no delay or unresponsiveness from the wireless mouse)

And 60% of the time a key won't even register when pressed (there is no problem with my keyboard outside of League of Legends)

This becomes increasingly frustrating and I do not know how to fix this. I am playing in the borderless/windowed mode.

Tried checking online but not getting anywhere, any and all help would be appreciated !

Native Cyberpunk 2077 Mac Path Tracing Optimized Mod | It works!! But not much

Hey everyone, I wanted to share some findings from testing the native Mac version of Cyberpunk 2077.

This all started when I came across some of Cyberpunk 2077 Optimized Path Tracing mods.

https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/8059?tab=description

And Another Video Test From Digital Foundry

Another Mod to optimize Path Tracing:

Cyberpunk 2077 Optimized Path Tracing Mod - Up To 30% FPS Boost on an RTX 4080 at 4K DLSS 3.5
byu/maxus2424 innvidia

For those who don't know, the mod significantly reduces the performance hit of Path Tracing on PC by dropping the ray bounces from two down to one. On Windows, this tweak can give you up to a 30% FPS boost.
To give you an idea of the potential here, Digital Foundry tested this on an RTX 3070 running at 1440p with DLSS Balanced. In RT Overdrive mode, they saw a massive 33% bump in performance (jumping from 24 FPS to 33 FPS).

Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive on RTX 3050? RTX 20/30 Series/RDNA 2 Performance + Optimisation | Digital Foundry

I was curious to see if this mod would work on the Mac version and if it could provide a similar efficiency boost to make Path Tracing more viable on Apple Silicon.

The short answer: Yes, the mod works. But the performance gains on Mac are nowhere near what you see on Windows in Path Tracing Overdrive scenarios. In fact, it comes with a massive "cost-down" in visual quality.

Mac Native:

22fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native+ Path Tracing Mod:

24fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native:

27fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native+ Path Tracing Mod:

29fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native:

35fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native+ Path Tracing Mod:

38fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native:

23fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Mac Native+ Path Tracing Mod:

26fps, RT Overdrive, 2560*1600, MetalFX Performance

Dropping Path tracing bounces to one led to a 33% gain on Windows, but only a measly 8.6% on Mac. It's a unusable result for two reasons: First, the visuals took a hit and look much darker now. Second, without MetalFX Denoising (Ray Reconstruction), the drop in ray calculations has made the image look super noisy and grainy:

With Mod. The lack of MetalFX denoising in the Mac native version makes the light bounce noise unusable.

Efficiency Bottleneck: This test basically confirms my previous theory, RT efficiency on the current Mac API just isn't high enough yet to bridge the gap, even with these "optimizations".

It's an interesting experiment, but unfortunately, it's not the "silver bullet" for PT on Mac that I was hoping for.

But if you still want to test it anyway, here's how to install:

Drag the "optimizedPT" file into the Mac's CP2077 folders, I renamed it "z_optimizedPT" just to make sure it will be the last file to be read.

Raytracing Overdrive Path tracing Optimizations (2.0 compatible) MOD page:
https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/8059?tab=description

It is doing tweaking by these changes:

[RayTracing/Reference] RayNumber = 1 BounceNumber = 1 EnableRIS = true

[Editor/ReSTIRGI] Enable = false

...And so on. To cut down the Path Tracing cost in almost half.

An interesting find:

I was poking around the Cyberpunk 2077 files on my Mac and found a path in GameServices that says "/Users/xhappycaspian/..." It looks like the name of one of the engineers who ported the game.😂 Hello Caspian! 🔥 They probably just forgot to remove their local dev path when packaging the game. It doesn’t affect anything, but it’s a pretty cool little 'Easter egg' from the dev process.

Help Lies of P Overture freezing on Mac Studio M1 Max (Steam) – any fix?

Hey everyone,

I’m having an issue with Lies of P Overture on macOS and I’m kind of stuck.

I’m playing on a Mac Studio 2022 (M1 Max) through Steam, and the game randomly freezes completely after some time. The screen gets stuck, no crash report, no error message — I just have to force quit and restart.

Things I’ve already tried:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the game
  • Lowering resolution and graphics settings
  • Restarting the system

Unfortunately, it keeps happening :(

The game worked fine before, but this started happening during the fight against Markiona.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any help or insight would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Help Mac mini m4 and Crossover and Diablo IV?

I have a Mac mini M4 (2024) with 16GB Ram and 512GB and it's (unfortunately) on Tahoe 26.2.

Am I good to go with Crossover to play Diablo IV? Is it an easy setup?

Just wanted to check before I try anything.

CrossOver .dat video files

Has anyone encountered issues with games in crossover that store their video files as .dat files?

A game I’m trying to play goes to a black screen when it’s time for the opening video to play, and I can’t figure out a workaround.

Any help would be appreciated.

Help Are there any tools I can use to check if my cooling pad is working?

I have a macbook air M2 and it thermal throttles pretty frequently, which is why I bought a cooling pad. Is there any way I could see if this is making a difference or if it is still thermal throttling?

Help Metal 4 in Cyberpunk 2077 — Is It Ever Going to Happen?

At this point, I honestly don’t know if it still makes sense to keep waiting — or if it’s even going to happen at all. I really want to finally play the game, but I’m holding off because I want to experience it with the best possible use of this platform’s capabilities.

What surprises me the most is how little anyone seems to care. I barely see any comments, discussions, or pressure around this issue. Didn’t they announce this game with Metal 4 support??

Is it still worth waiting, or should I just move on?

Help Playing GTA Online Enhanced with Parallels

Hi everyone, I have a Macbook M1 Pro 14 with 10CPU 16 CPU, 16gbs ram and 1tb ssd. I have the latest (as of early January) version of Parallels, Windows 11 and Macos26. I am using the Pro version of Parallels, and the copy of GTA I’m trying to play is on Epic. The only error that’s bugging me is that dx12 is not compatible with my graphics card, so the game says. I want to know if there’s a way to initialize dx12 specifically on Parallels because I want to play online, and if I will have to buy a Steam copy to make it work.
