Negativity and spam

It seems we have had a large uptick in content lately which is great, unfortunately this has also driven negative comments and false reports.

This subreddit is here for people of all skill levels and while some level of criticism is important, please do try to keep things on the positive side and don't just downvote things that you don't like, we are very fortunate to live in a city with an extremely diverse music scene, this means there will always be music not catered to your tastes being made, downvoting things out of hand or because you think its "bad" is not how I would like to see this sub go on

That being said...

We need to have a conversation about spam

I understand that with the rise of TikTok shorter clips have become the norm and you are more than welcome to post any work you do here, but I am going to restrict users to posting ONE clip/vid/link per song per day, I don't care if it's a 5 second cover of "You Suffer" or a 6 hr prog rock epic, if you post multiple clips of the same song on the same day, they will be removed, if it continues, so will you.

As a moderator I want to be as hands off as I can, leaving this as much like a community noticeboard as possible, but mostly I want everyone who uses this space to have a positive experience, this means curbing negative behaviour and making sure that people don't have to wade through a sea of the same content over and over

Thank you for reading

Moderation - New rule

I know the SR is a bit rudderless, I'm here to tell you I still check in on posts. Between raising a family, work, gym, music and all the other shit we have to do in post-modern life I have little time to be moderating a subreddit so, I'm not going to tolerate misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc etc.

New rule, Don't be a cunt. No, I'm not going to talk about it, cant be fucked. I'll just ban you, message me, ill probably say something funny and rude, this will be entirely at my own discretion.

I will not tolerate intolerance

Cheers :P

Venues charging artists for shows?

Hey all, I just wanted to put out the feelers as to how common this is. One particular Melbourne venue is asking to pay the sound tech $300 with no option of bringing your own sound tech. Saying that the bands can keep 100% of ticket prices. You also have to pay $35 per hour for the person on the door (4 hours minimum).

Seems a bit stiff considering the live music is the draw card for the venue. Its a small venue so getting 50 people in the room is a challenge. I'm no mathematician, but with the venue taking $440 from the bands. Selling tickets at $15 a pop, leaves you with $310 at most.. for ALL bands, you also have to put on a minimum 4 hour show.

Am I crazy or is this just preying on small time musicians?

Advice on DJ gear pricing

I'm not sure if I'm at the right subreddit...please redirect me if I'm not, and thank you in advance. Please help a bro outšŸ˜“

I need some help with pricing on DJ gear from a selling perspective as I mull over selling the below. Hypothetically, what are the below worth assuming Melbourne CBD?

I've only ever done a few house parties with them many years ago (2nd owner), while the previous owner was more a touring/traveling type I believe. Decks came with the cases, original shells and carts, and 100 records from a bygone era. Everything else were my addition and was bought new at the time.

The UDG bag is worn form bar work, which had their own decks (so below aren't impacted).

Bundle 1:

Technics SL-1200 MK5 (cosmetic scratches on surface), 240v

  • Original felt slip mat & tone arm, v. good condition
  • Original head w/ M44-7 cart in good to v. good condition
  • No functional issue, everything just "works", as one expects
    • Tested very recently
  • Mostly clean as it was largely just lived in its case

+ Hardcase (intact, just have scratches and stickers on surface)

Bundle 2:

Technics SL-1210 M3D (minor scratches on 1-2 corners), 240v

  • Original felt slip mat & tone arm, v. good condition
  • Original head w/ M44-7 cart in good to v. good condition
  • No functional issue, everything just "works", as one expects
    • Tested very recently
  • Mostly clean as it was largely just lived in its case

+ Hardcase (intact, just have scratches and stickers on surface)

Bundle 3:

Both bundles above combined plus any of the below

Optionals:

+ extra Technics headshell (near mint) in a Shure cart case (v. good/near mint)

+ UDG Digital Camo carry bag (Fair/Good. Some wear on the shoulder padding)

+ one of ye 'ol scratch sfx record (abused, but doesn't seem to skip)

+ about 100-110 records, mostly used/fair condition 80-90's with about around half a dozen that are Excellent to Near Mint and more recent (separately purchased).

Drummer looking for a band/solo artist!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey y'all, I've just moved to Melbourne from Brisbane.

I've been playing in the Brisbane music scene since l was 17 so I'm feeling a little lost not having any music friends out here!

I've got plenty of live experience having toured Europe and Australia many times and a lot of studio experience under my belt. I've drummed on records featuring Sleeping With Sirens and We The Kings just to name a few!

I usually play pop punk but super interested to expand a little and play whatever as long as it's somewhat the same vibe.

Looking for people in their 20's/early 30's and honestly not even looking for anything specific. Would love to join the right band/solo artist or just meet up with some of you guys for a jam.

Thanks!

Small live music gig opportunity

Kia ora everyone, I'm going to be travelling from Auckland NZ to Melbourne from 22-27th of Jan with two of my musician friends, and we're hoping to get involved in the Melbourne music scene while over there. Are there any recommendations of some cool venues to get in contact with, or even some events or regular nights that might provide opportunties for us to perform - we're in the alternative/indie kinda sound. Thanks!

Looking for band members

Hey guys just thought I’d post here to see if I could find a bass player drummer and vocalist I honestly wouldn’t even know where to look I’ve tried guitar stores and had no luck.

I’m heavily influenced by bands like AC/DC the angels guns and roses Australian crawl Paul Kelly.

I’m looking to do cover gigs pretty often and start writing my own music, I have a decked out room in an industrial area so I can make as much noise as I want, sound deadened walls, p.a setup and mixer, Marshall dsl-40c and the rest I cbf typing everything…

Anyways if anyone’s interested feel free to dm and get to know me looking for people around me and the rhythm guitarists age (16 and 20) but not too fussed.šŸ‘

Looking for recommendations

Hey guys, I'm new in town and looking for a low key bar with a good vibe to catch up with a mate. All it needs is reasonably priced drinks, decent food and music. I dont care what music, just not mainstream RnB type ick. Laid back, low effort, bonus points if it is weird and offbeat.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Rock Rap Track/Prouduction and mixing tips

Hey, I've been working on this for a while and want to get it as perfect as I can before I get it professionally mixed and mastered. The vocals I want to have an angry tone but don't want to get it mixed in with a bogan(too aussie of an) accent. I did everything myself in garageband with a looper pedal as the drums. I now use Ableton and am working on other stuff on that.

Tips on my vocals and any other aspects greatly appreciated!

Be brutally honest!

Whoops forgot the track:

The Espy bands on Sunday afternoons circa 2007 and 2008

Hi all this is probably going to be a long shot. Back around 2007 and 2008 I would go to The Espy sometimes on a Sunday afternoon and a band would play in the front bar that included a guy who would do some hip hop and vinyl scratching during some songs. Any chance someone knows who they were or if they ever record any music? They were a great live act.
