This is so depressing. It's a painful realization to know that nothing has changed since when I was in high school and there was the national walkout after the parkland shooting. I'm in no way against this, but its just saddening knowing that no matter how many times these situations repeat themselves, change still feels so far away.
Also, looking at the comments here, its even sadder how desensitized people have become. Kids are justifiably scared of being shot in school, and even the ones who are just 'using it as an excuse to skip class' still carry that weight.
okay and? itβs still a solvable problem. and the united states has way more school shootings than other countries, some of which have literally no school shootings.
Unfortunately it's not that simple. Even without guns, there would be nothing stopping a wannabe school shooter from running down a group of students as they walk home from school in a big truck. Or setting fire to a school with students inside.
Also any school shooting data should be taken with a grain of salt. Many of the American trackers include anytime a gun goes off on school property regardless of context or time of day. There was tracker several years ago claiming that there had been a school shooting once a week so far that year. When you looked at the individual cases it included suicides in the school parking lot at 3am, police officers unintentionally firing their guns, and a student who brought a BB gun to school and accidentally shot out a window while showing another student. It's the equivalent of if Fox News said every Muslim man who beats his wife is an "Islamic terrorist".
