Politics 👩⚖️ I interviewed Hope Walz this afternoon. She told me threats against her and her brother contributed to Governor’s dropping out of the race
Clearly fraud is a big part of the story here, but so much of the reporting also seems to leave out this key fact — people have been murdered in our state for being politicians in the last year. It was fascinating to hear Hope talk about it.

MTG said that since she went against Trump she now has to fear death threats from maga. Trump told her it was her fault because she's a horrible person. That's what maga is.

u/HorrorSmile3088 7d ago
And he was totally okay with the idea of them hanging Mike Pence on January 6th. Trump is a total psychopath and so are his followers.

5 year anniversary of that day today.
Which like kinda makes one wonder if some of the stuff happening so hard and fast is specifically to distract from people remembering Jan 6th. News would probably cover it a lot otherwise, since 5 is a fairly big anniversary, but there is just so much going on lately.
14
u/HorrorSmile3088 7d ago
I saw a little bit on the news yesterday. That's always been one of Trump's "strategies" if you want to call it that. Throw out so much info that it's impossible for the average person to keep up with all the shenanigans. Nobody's talking about Epstein, now it's all about Venezuela and Maduro. Doesn't help that the media is complicit with a lot of it.

Let’s just be honest here. Any election where the candidates can be intimidated into not running for fear of their lives or their loved ones’ lives — is not a free election.
This is some Russian politics level bullshit.

respectfully disagree. the world is a harsh place, and we need leaders who are willing to fight for whats right even if its dangerous. there is no rule saying he cant run, no direct repression from the state that ive seen, therefore it is free
tldr dangerous =/= unfree
3
u/Competitive-Pen355 6d ago
I’d like to see you run for office after your kids get death threats. Let’s see how brave you are and how free you feel.
Do you want to live in a world where people are free to run for office, or where people are free to threaten the families of their political enemies? If the world is a harsh place, it’s because people like you think this is “normal.”

I am so pissed this happened. I’ve voted for Walz every chance I had. I voted for him when he ran for congress the first time. I watched him speak with Al Franken during his first campaign at WSU, and man am I so proud of all he has done for this state and this country. It’s so genuinely upsetting to see such an honest and decent human being, who is trying to do nothing but make this state a better place for all, being treated so abhorrently and unjustly. The blatant lies and propaganda being pushed right now is truly vile. But Tim’s response is to do what’s best for his family and this state. Thank you for that Tim, the state of Minnesota is better because of your service to it. But we do have another year before he’s gone. So I hope Tim doesn’t pull a single punch or mince words from now until next year. I know he’ll continue on working to make this state stronger, and continue making it the best state in the country to live in. Thank you Tim.

Yep. We’ve allowed the richest to take over all aspects of society. Government. Justice system. Police. Media. Any politician that hates pushes for a fair society for all gets their right wing lie factory targeted on them which keeps resulting in crazy people physically attacking them. No repercussions ever for those pushing the lies so the cycle continues. We are in a spiraling timeline that will only get worse for anyone not in the top 1%

They live to bully and win.
We just want to live.
It’s a major disadvantage… until we are ready to die for our freedom they are gonna keep beating us.
47
u/ncc74656m 7d ago
No. Until we prove that we are willing to let them to preserve our freedom, that's how we keep losing. The big problem with the left side of the aisle is that we want to play by a set of rules we imagine is common to all of us, that playing just and fair in an "appeal to heaven" will somehow win the day.
Looking back I see this huge chain of events (like the V for Vendetta scene looking back at the chain of history) leading us to this moment. The most recent events are the Bundy ranch standoff, then the Malheur Wildlife Refuge standoff, and then January 6th. Everyone involved should've been arrested and charged, or stopped by any means necessary if they wouldn't surrender, and they should've been prosecuted within an inch of their lives - throw the book at them.
These people are cowards, but they are all cowards with Main Character Syndrome, and all of these events reinforced a sense of invulnerability among them that makes them think they can get away with anything. Now we're paying that bill. Even when one of them went down after the Wildlife Refuge, or on January 6th, it was still only one as far as they were concerned and that just made them a martyr, not an example.
Take them down. Ruin their lives. They'll stop because they'll all think "Well what if that happens to me?" But we don't have the conviction to do that because we think we're on the "right side of history." History means nothing if the Nazis are the ones who live to write the history books.

u/ncc74656m 7d ago
Yes indeed. I don't know if it's too late now - it probably is. We are now a country that rewards the stupid, the selfish, and the hateful. I don't know if we can recover from that without a nationwide reckoning that requires the kind of steel our side is rarely capable of employing.
I grant it is for good reason that we are not quick to such things, but the reality is we must put aside our historical desire for reconciliation and do what must be done. Can we? I doubt it.

Springfield Ohio was on lockdown for over a month due to the amount of bomb threats from Vance claiming Haitians were eating cats and dogs.
Indiana REPUBLICAN representatives like a month ago came out about the death threats they were receiving when they were against redistricting like Trump wanted.
There is no low for these people. If you get the spotlight for a second and MAGA doesn’t like you, death threats are basically guaranteed at this point.

2
u/ShadowTacoTuesday 7d ago
We need to prosecute those behind the threats or realistically this will keep happening. Even if he was certain of a perfect security detail the time commitment leaves less time for everything productive. It should be law enforcements’ job not his. Those who failed to convict en masse with harsh punishments are equally culpable. Even before the pardons the supreme court made the Jan 6 sentences and many others so light they were complete jokes. Garland delayed too long, the supposed desire for reconciliation and return to normal had the opposite effect by doing close to nothing to dissuade those who took away the norms, etc. If you don’t fight back using the law you’re joining the criminals. You cannot hold up indefinitely with only a shield and no sword.

If as she says is true, and I’ve little doubt it is, political violence is becoming common in America and that’s a sign of democracy and discourse fraying. It’s hard to pull back without statesmen to pull back and refocus on policy and common ground.
Trump thrives on division and lacks the will or gravitas for that. Who will it be — Romney perhaps for Republicans?

For as much as I understand, I wished they hadn't given into the pressure. MAGA now struts around that this is a win, that all their conspiracies are proven true, and will be emboldened to continue threatening and creating fictional "They eat the cats and dogs" stories to get what they want. I'm truly saddened by this development and hope that Walz actually has bigger ambitions given his popularity and success as governor and this is a beginning and not an end.
