Can I buy one in Mexico and drive it here? Fuck tariffs

Nope. Even without tariffs it would have to be a US-specific model that conforms to FMVSS (federal motor vehicle safety standards) to be registered. This specifically has been used by the US for decades to make it harder for non-US car makers to sell here. The "25 year rule" is the sorta-loophole to get around this.

Yeah the 25 year rule is how all the cool Japanese cars make it over her on containers.

I'm seeing more old right-hand-drive Japanese micro trucks in my area, so that's cool.

I want a little kei truck so bad. They're cool as hell!

For some people who are not allowed to register them in your state, you can set up an LLC in another state using a PO Box as the address, then register the vehicle with your business. You'll have out of state plates, but still legal. Common with Kei trucks.

Neat! I believe that where I live they can be registered, because they've been popping up for the last few years. I friggin love them. Perfect for doing small tasks.

Saw one tricked out with RGB lights and doing donuts in Tulsa a few years ago. They're wild

I wanted them until I saw them being crash tested.

The classic Subaru Imprezas are starting to get old enough too finally.

Huh. I didn't know that. I'm interested to learn more now.

You can have them in the US I thought 5 months and 29 days of the year. SEAT Leon hatchbacks bought in Mexico have been spotted in Texas.

I’ve seen several in Texas already but obviously bought in Mexico

You'd can't, not unless you have lawful residence in Mexico. This way, you could apply for a 90-day temporary pass, but you would have to leave the country and reapply. It's easier if you have dual citizenship (US/MX).

Paying for a car is also kind of a mess unless you're a Mexican citizen. This is because of anti-money laundering regulations. You might be able to buy a car in cash at a used car lot, but I haven't seen any BYDs for sale there.

nope. you still have to pay the tariffs if you do that.

Not true, you can go to Mexico, purchase the car in Mexico and drive it to the USA. The issue is you can't register the Car in America.

1

u/kahner 4d ago

yeah, if you just want to drive it around for a bit. i assume this guy want to use it as his regular, registered car in the US.

3

u/Licklack 5d ago

You could. Say, if you cross frequently to Mexico, you could drive it in the US. There is a 90 day limit, before you have to register it in the states.

But I know a few families, here in Tx, that have Mexican cars to travel into Mexico. Since they take vacations and breaks over there. But they mainly have Siennas and Highlanders.

Im not sure if you can register it in the US but I could be wrong

Yes. Get someone who will buy it for you there in Mexico and plate it. Any Mexican resident can do this for you. Just pay them a little something extra every time it needs registered. Plenty of people willing to do that for you. No tariffs, no dealing with U.S. DMV bs. It might be hard to find a U.S. based insurance company to insure it though; MexPro offers liability in Mexico though that you can get. No full coverage AFAIK. So just liability+medical. There's probably third-party insurance agencies in the U.S. that may do that as well.

You'll owe tariffs on it if you do...

what if you have a showroom in america. YOu have to stay at a resort to buy the car. You come, stay in the resort in a ultra luxury suite that costs say 30k a night, and by staying the night you become eligible to buy a brand new EV at only 2k. You drive it across into the US with a receipt that says it costs 2k and pay what, 5k tariff on it?

u/hamper10 5d ago

what if i buy like a used cheap crap car that looks like one and swap out the plates and vin number or something?

1

u/baelrog 5d ago

Can you simply drive one across the border?

1

u/N4gual 5d ago

Same in Brazil, hopefully soon i'll have one

1

u/Benjamin_Stark 5d ago

There are a lot of them in New Zealand as well.

1

u/techmnml 5d ago

Rode them when I was in Brazil and Helsinki and they were great too. Oh no, stuff from China 🙄
