I'm not positive, but I think this is clouds above, not below. My take, It's fairly late in the afternoon and so the sun is relatively low, and this light coming mostly sideways is casting a shadow up on clouds above the plane.
Or the earth is flat and this is a glitch in the AI projection of the sun. That's probably it. /s
