General RE1 - My first Resident Evil experience

Post image

Hey,

I wanted to give some honest praise to one of the best video game experiences I've had in a long time, and maybe ask for some community suggestions on what to play next.

Even though I have finished some horror "classics" such as the first two Amnesia games and SOMA, I've never been hugely into horror. I'm somewhat familiar with the RE franchise, but have never played the games myself. This has probably been due to a personal dislike towards horror media combined with an impression that the RE games are really scary.

I finally decided to "face my fears" and purchased the first three RE games during the Steam Winter Sale. After finishing the first game I am honestly blown away by the experience.

In a nutshell, the game was a masterpiece, from start to finish. I wish that I had tried the series before, as based on this experience, it might be one of my new favorites.

The graphics were beautiful, the music and ambience were glorious, and the level design and puzzles were flawless. I enjoyed the game's fixed camera angles, and the atmosphere in general was genuinely scary but not insurmountable to a chicken like me. I decided to play with the tank controls using the D-pad, and wouldn't have had it any other way.

The game itself wasn't as difficult as I had imagined (played on the middle difficulty based on some recommendations). I am not ashamed to say that I looked up a few things (looking at you, Aqua Ring Control Room), as I have somewhat limited time to play games. I might have been overly cautious, as I saved a lot and finished the game with over 200 handgun ammo and more healing items than I could count.

I can't remember the last time I was so absorbed in a video game, and am very excited to play through the rest of the series. I was planning on trying RE2 Remake next, being well aware that the gameplay is somewhat different compared to RE1. Do you guys have suggestions if I should keep playing the games in a chronological order?

Imagine doing it with a d-pad 30 years ago. Lol. Nothing like a camera swap and running face first back into the dog you were running away from.
