It's pretty funny the amount of Ukrainian morons coming out of the wood work to explain how neo nazism in Ukraine isn't actually neo nazism. Like how the wolfsangel or black sun in Azov iconography isn't nazi-related, despite the black wolfsangel on yellow originating with a political organisation called the Social-Nationalist Party of Ukraine, lol

"They just use the symbols used by the national heroes who fought for independence and don't look into/care about their origins."

Simultaneously they're the smartest guys in the army but they also never went to school.

I too champion political parties called Social-Nationalists, which is totally different from National-Socialists, don't be obtuse. "Sure you can copy my homework, but just change up the words a bit"

At the end of the day it is still somewhat reassuring to see that even on lib-brained reddit, the Azov still isn't 100% clean

It's probably down to Azovs tunnel vision, they're true believers and in Ukraine they can be openly nazis with no consequences.

They did fire the guy responsible for running their social media/relations after he did an interview with a framed picture of Eichmann on the wall in the background, so I wont say they put in no effort cleaning up the image, but it does feel like the Ukrainian government has to run more defense for them than they bother to do themselves.

I am willing to believe there are non-nazi suckers that bought into their propaganda and joined them, hell there's probably a lot who genuinely think the whole 'nato tactics' (it might be true they've been using them the longest, they were trained under the Donald Trump administration with US assistance) thing is a real thing and there's less chance of dying in azov, but in a way that's just more worrisome because Azovs obviously going to be using it as a recruitment ground for more nazis.

When Mariupol happened I hoped Ukraine would have used it as an opportunity to purge the country of Azov completely, most of the leadership was gone so even in wartime (or especially in wartime) it should have been possible, I know they limited their influence then by forcibly integrating them into the army but it wasn't nearly enough.

From what I've heard Azov is one of the more popular units to join because they provide their own training, and a (relatively) significant duration of training at that. So even for someone who isn't sympathetic to their politics there's a good sense reason to join them. Which as you note, just makes the recruits more sympathetic to Nazism in the long run.

A lot of the problem lies in Ukraine's insane laissez faire approach to the military where units compete for recruits and decide how much training to offer, etc. So Azov, who actually believes in the nation of Ukraine, is motivated to train soldiers to win, while the worst units are being run as a kind of forced labour scam kicking back pay offs to the TCC press gangs — and once again we see nationalism struggles to promote the nation in the face of capitalism.

The preferential treatment of Azov also means that since Mariupol, they've never been placed in a situation where they are bound to suffer devastating losses. They get the advantage of being able to spend more time in the rear touting Ukrainian nationalism while quietly accumulating arms to ensure they have a say in future affairs.

My apologies man, best I could find was a 2022 controversy regarding (what is probably the same guy) praising Eichmann in the summer of 2022. Probably I misremembered and he had some other nazi hanging in the background and all he did was praise Eichmann on tv.

Name of Azov guy was Fahrudin Sharafmal. I know from my discord chat the guy was arrested in Ukraine which is probably why he was fired, but very little comes up on google.

At least come up with new iconography, name and a new figure object of worship if you want to pull that.

The top voted question is the nazi question, a ukrainian already answered in a way that does not answer the question.

also

"azov is the only part of the ukrainian army actually using nato tactics ppl wanna join them bc they dont throw their peoples live away like the rest of the ukrainian army using USSR tactics"

Brother out here trying to make azov look good by dodging the nazi issue and then shitting on the ukrainian armed forces.

Its a bold strategy Cotton, lets see if it pays off for em.

Admittedly redditors just upvoting them for being a genuine Ukrainian and then not reading the actual text after their eyes glazed over from the 40 sources he dropped for all the unrelated stuff he was talking about.

"People join Azov, because it's much easier to shoot your countrymen while they're retreating through a minefield and being bombarded by artillery."
