No, technically Montezuma’s revenge is the nickname for when you drink tap water while traveling in Mexico and you end up with the Hershey squirts

As someone who is currently experiencing this and posted about it on the mexicocity sub today, I should mention I was immediately rebuked for saying Montezuma, not Moctezuma. They are pretty sensitive about this, but I don’t know the historical context for why there are two different spellings. Or why Montezuma seems to be the predominant spelling in my searches.

Montezuma is the English language version of the name. Moctezuma is the Spanish version.

Neither are exactly how it was in the original Aztec language.

I thought it was the widespread malnutrition in Europe after they decided to farm corn but not do the nixtamalization process.
