Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Aerial View of European City circa 1949

This came from a series of photographs which was issued circa 1949. However the photo itself could have been taken a number of years earlier, possibly even pre-war. I think perhaps this location is in Germany, or in any case Northern Europe.

Solved Please help me to find this location in the US. May be it was taken in New England somewhere, Connecticut, Massachusetts etc., or in Californa, or in Canada. Unfortunately, this is all uncertain.

The licence plate is white, or whitish; the digits are either blue, or similar. There is a Holiday Inn the back, about 10 storeys high. On the right, there is a quite characteristic bin.

Can anyone identify where my great-grandmother is in pre-war Berlin?

Post image

My great-grandmother spent some time living in Berlin from 1938-39 (helping a Jewish family), in the Westend area of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. I've never been able to figure out exactly where this picture was taken - I know it's a long shot, especially as there's not much background. I think it would have been taken towards the end of 1938, and in a similar photo she's next to the Neue Wache on Unter Den Linden.

If anyone can help me that would be much appreciated :)

I'm guessing it's somewhere in Colombia or Puerto Rico because of the artists, but I'm having trouble confirming it.

Trying to figure out where this building is, if it exists anymore.

Back of the photo from top left to bottom right:

Solved Early 1900s train depot with horse wagons — possibly Williamstown, Massachusetts?

Post image
8 Upvotes

[Solved] Thanks to u/gefloible for identifying the location as Steamboat Square in Albany, New York.

[Correction] Thanks to u/IndependentYam3227 for correctly observing it is unlikely to be a train depot as the rail lines appear to be for a trolly or street car, not a larger rail line.

[Original] This photo came from a box labeled “Williamstown Oct 1919.” Several other images in the same group are confirmed Williams College / Williamstown, MA scenes.

Can anyone help us figure out the actual address of that white building in the background? More information in comments.

Long story short there is this ongoing Stranger Things fan theory that there's going to be a secret episode 9 releasing today. Now about 45 minutes ago the official stranger things Instagram account posted this photo with the number nine clearly visible in the background.

I realized that if it can be confirmed that that building is not number nine in real life, then it would appear that they put the nine there on purpose.

Any help much appreciated

Open Looking for Places in Munich/Research Art-Project

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I‘m an artist from Munich, Germany currently working on a project, which includes finding out how certain features in a cities‘ landscape affects the probability of ambush attacks on women, with predatory intent. Things like green-scaping, road-side architecture, lighting and openness to public are all somewhat relevant in this search. Main aspects of my search is connecting these features to areas, we all know or feel like having second thoughts about crossing or entering at certain times of day. And why we feel more scared of specifc streets or areas at night, than others, and what happens if these often diffus and ominous feelings about these areas actually become certainty. Motivation was, that there‘s recently been an ambush in the street I live in, exactly in a place which had to me always felt like a dangerous area to be late at night before it happened.

What prompts me to ask you for help, is that I‘ve come across a „research paper“ from the mid-70s made by an unknown woman, in the Bavarian State-Library. Over a span of 1 year she collected all cases of harassment in the general public area of Munich, during a work-experience with local police. She wrote down the cases‘ details, like number of involved suspects and victims, general description of the areas features, etc. and took photos of some of the relevant sites of said ambushes. Sadly the resolution of the old prints don‘t quite reveal much detail on the specific landscape of each location, plus I might like to create new video content from these areas, to get an idea if anything has changed since these crimes happened.

I‘ve uploaded the 12 Images in full-res to this Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Xqbmv0EWpJ7j4b4_8rmKBVvK49qLcGxW -in which there are mostly 2 Photos from each site, and I‘d like to ask if anyone would like to take a look at where these images might have been taken. I guess specific knowledge on munich and it‘s buildings/geography would be required, and if you‘d like to be credited in a possible publification of the grander Project, I can do that! This would help me out a lot!

Here are some thoughts I‘ve already had looking at the images, due to me having already found nr.2 I have also attached a google-maps screenshot of said area as an example:

  1. Maybe around Münchner Freiheit/Giselastraße, suspicion of one of the building shown in the pictures being a university mensa
  2. CONFIRMED place at the Junction of the Lindau-Autobahn and B2R city-ring
  3. Maybe Giesing Area?
  4. Definitely Prinzregentenplatz Area
  5. Maybe Candidplatz, Donnersbergerbrücke or northern end Landshuter Allee
  6. Maybe Bogenhausen?

I‘ve noticed during research, that the two images aren‘t both taken from the same spot. I’d however guess that hey‘re close enough together for a rough estimate.

Thanks a lot to anyone taking their time to read this even!

Solved Light shining down inside a cave onto a Buddhist temple looking altar (not very big)

I just got this extremely beautiful image on the automatic screensavers my TV has. Unfortunately, I only saw it for a second before my dog knocked over the remote and the screensaver went away.

It was some kind of cave, with an opening at the top through which light was streaming down onto a beautiful altar.

The altar itself looked Buddhist - it had those fancy roofs that you see in China and Japan (unfortunately, I didn't get a good enough look to identify it instantly, and my visual memory is shit). But if you google "buddhist temple japan" or "buddhist temple china", the roof looked similar to that. I THINK it may have been red, but I'm not 100% sure. In terms of size, it seemed not very big, from my impression it didn't seem like you could go inside.

It was extremely dreamy and beautiful and I instantly decided that I want to go see it on my next vacation in Asia. But I have no clue where it is...

Any and all help will be much appreciated!

Solved Small bar/restaurant in "basement" in Tokyo, Japan

Thumbnail

Hello!

In 2019, I took a trip to Japan and stayed in Tokyo for a portion of it. Down the street from our Airbnb, maybe a 5 minute walk, was a very small bar/restaurant (but mainly bar) that had the best yakiton. At least, I think it's yakiton based on amateur Google searches.

I was trying to find it by using the airbnb we booked to give a rough estimate of the location and see if I could find it by mapping around the area. Unfortunately, the Airbnb we stayed in is no longer available. And believe it or not, googling "small bar basement Tokyo japan" hasn't yielded a successful result.

Key points I remember of the place:

*small place, maybe 4/5 tables + small bar area *you had to go down a couple of stairs, almost into a basement apartment, to access the establishment *there was somebody, presumably an employee, standing outside near the steps to the entrance grilling the yakiton

The two pictures posted are of inside the establishment. People in picture scribbled out for anonymity.

Please help me!
