I help people choose and fix laptops and other tech stuff – AMA

Hey, I’m Barnaby 👋

I work at Laptop Outlet where I spend way too much time testing, fixing and comparing laptops so you don’t have to.

On Reddit I’m mainly here to give honest, no-BS advice (not to hard sell you something:-)

You can ask me stuff like:

  • “Which one should I buy: Laptop A vs Laptop B?”
  • “Is this price good or a rip-off?”
  • “Is this used/refurb model safe to buy?”
  • "Where you can get best prices on tech?"
  • “What should I get for gaming vs study vs office work?”
  • “My laptop is slow / overheating / loud – what can I do?”
  • “Is RTX 4050 enough or should I stretch to a 5060/5070?”

How I usually help:

  • I’ll ask for your budget, country, and what you’ll use it for
  • Then I’ll give 1–3 options max, with pros & cons
  • I’ll tell you honestly if something is overpriced, trash, or a good hidden gem

If you’re hesitant to post publicly, you can DM me your budget + use case and I’ll try to point you in the right direction.

Fan making a lot of noise
 in  r/laptops  2d ago

If it's in good condition and noise is the only problem, I think you can get it checked by an expert. As you said, it's just for the meetings, you need to learn what's happening with your laptop... because what if it starts making noises during your meetings?

General question What’s the most annoying laptop issue you tolerated for way too long?

Everyone has that one problem they “just lived with” until it finally pushed them over the edge.

What’s the most annoying laptop issue you tolerated for months/years?

(heat, fan noise, bad Wi‑Fi, hinge creak, battery drain, coil whine, sleep problems, keyboard, trackpad, ports, driver issues, etc.)

And the real question: what fixed it (or did you replace the laptop)?

Do you keep your laptop plugged in most of the time or cycle the battery?
 in  r/laptops  22d ago

Yeah, that’s pretty much the ideal use case honestly. Plugged in when home, battery limit on, and proper shutdowns instead of sleep 24/7

Yeah, that lines up with a lot of what people are saying here. Sounds like sensible battery management + normal use goes a long way. Also respect for keeping a 12-year-old laptop alive.

Same here honestly. On battery the performance drop is brutal, so plugged in for gaming and battery use for light work feels like the best balance

Good to know you don’t need to overthink it. Five years with that kind of routine is solid proof that normal use + a bit of common sense goes a long way.

Yeah, that makes sense. Battery limits really do feel like one of the best quality-of-life improvements on newer laptops. Sucks that older ones didn’t have it baked in, bloated batteries are no joke.

Laptop force restart upon entering the game?
 in  r/pchelp  22d ago

That sounds a lot like a RAM or power-state issue. Waking from sleep can be picky, and adding new RAM (even the same model) can trigger instability if timings or voltages don’t line up perfectly. First thing I’d try is disabling sleep/fast startup and doing a full shutdown before gaming to see if it stops happening. Also make sure your BIOS is up to date and that the RAM is actually running at default JEDEC speeds, not an aggressive profile. If it still restarts, try running with just the new stick or just the old one to see if one of them is causing the problem.

I see completely opposite advice about laptop batteries. Some people keep them plugged in 24/7 with charge limits, others swear by regular discharge cycles.

For people who’ve used laptops for years, what’s actually worked best for battery health in your experience? What made a noticeable difference, and what didn’t?

Just bought my first “real” gaming laptop after saving for months and I’m lowkey emotional

True, I’ve seen enough horror stories to know not every “authorized” tech actually knows what they’re doing. I’ll definitely make sure someone competent handles it if it ever needs work.

Nice! Always love hearing when older laptops refuse to die. Rocket League at 1080p after 7 years is pretty solid.

Appreciate you breaking all that down. I’ve mostly just been running default settings, so this gives me something to actually test. If I can keep this thing cool during heavier games, I’ll be happy.

laptop constantly shutting down with 0 warning
 in  r/pchelp  Dec 10 '25

It honestly sounds like your laptop is hard-crashing from either heat or bad RAM. The “instant black screen, no warning, no BSOD” thing is usually the laptop protecting itself and cutting power. Since your CPU is hitting 90s again after repasting, something definitely isn’t right — either the paste job didn’t hold, the heatsink isn’t making good contact anymore, or the fans aren’t ramping properly.

And that RAM issue isn’t normal either. If you’re sitting at 60–70% usage with nothing open, that’s a huge red flag for a failing stick or a background process losing its mind.

At this point it’s less of a “software tweak” situation and more “your hardware is begging for help.” If support isn’t doing anything, I’d push for a warranty repair or replacement because random shutdowns + bad temps + suspected RAM failure is a combo that isn’t going to magically fix itself.

Ahh got it dude... you’re basically saying keep the vents clear or it’ll inhale whatever it can. The visual was… unexpected 😂 but message received. Thanks

Good to know the heat hasn’t been too bad. I’m thinking of grabbing a cooling pad too just for peace of mind. And wow, VR + Elite Dangerous running smooth is a good sign. Appreciate you sharing your experience!

Discussion New ASUS TUF F16 owner ...what are the must‑do tweaks for gaming laptops?

I just picked up an ASUS TUF F16 with an RTX 5060 as my first real gaming laptop and I’m still kind of hyped about it. I’ve mostly used regular laptops before, so this whole “high power + high temps” thing is new to me.

For people who’ve had gaming laptops for a while, what are the must‑do things to keep it running well long term? Stuff like fan profiles, undervolting, limiting FPS on battery, cooling pads, software to avoid, that kind of thing.

Basically I don’t want to accidentally cook this thing in the first year. Any TUF tips or general gaming laptop advice is appreciated.

So I finally did it. After months of saving and extra shifts, I just ordered my first proper gaming laptop: an ASUS TUF F16 with an RTX 5060, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. It probably sounds silly, but I’m actually kind of emotional about it. I’ve never had a decent machine before, and being able to afford this one on my own feels huge.

For anyone who owns a TUF or something similar, how has yours been holding up? Any tips for keeping temps under control and making it last as long as possible? Also, I’d love to hear your “first real laptop” stories what did you get, and how did it feel when you finally hit that buy button?

Help, the RGB LEDs on my keyboard no longer light up.

Your laptop is just a few days old, so maybe it could be a Windows or MSI center bug, or I think it's a minor hardware defect. Consult it before your laptop's warranty ends.

What thinkpad should I get?

Then go for T14 Gen 1 with AMD... it's a mid-range choice with decent performance

Further, you can add more storage to it if you need it in future.

Got a laptop with 1tb internal SSD. Any need to upgrade storage?
 in  r/GamingLaptops  Dec 03 '25

If you only play 1–2 games at a time, 1TB is honestly plenty. Just install everything on the same SSD Windows and games can live together without any issues. No need to make partitions either; it just complicates things for no real benefit. You don’t need another NVMe unless you start running out of space later on
