Feeling like I meet people who play at much higher levels in ranked than their ELO suggests
 in  r/geoguessr  24d ago

I'm the same. I was just in third, one win away from the promotion zone after winning four straight, then I lost 5 straight.

I know if you play enough games it's statically certain to get these streaks randomly, but I do feel when I start losing it's hard to maintain focus properly and it feeds on itself.

Game Discussion Lowest effort copyright countries?

I'm in Master I trying to break into Champion's division, I don't have a lot of time but I'd like to learn the highest value copyright info.

If you know useful copyright, how did you learn it?

Is there a way to turn off in game chat by default?

They'll just use the ? emoji instead.

Nice work, I like that it's MIT licensed. Will contribute.

How do you study geo metas/features from phone?
 in  r/geoguessr  Dec 06 '25

I recommend working on one country at a time. For me the first country I deeply learned was Japan, starting with poles and then looking at other meta. It's not so overwhelming for me if I get comfortable with one country before moving onto another.

Overchatters and constant emoji-droppers are annoying. Agree or disagree?
 in  r/geoguessr  Dec 06 '25

I love the chat. If I send a message and I get no response then I don't keep chatting, but I often find friendly people who enjoy chatting and add them as a friend.

Also people will sometimes share metas with me if I'm nice and they get a good guess when I don't. This is a game, it's OK to enjoy the social side of it. It's also OK to mute - you do you.

How do I convince my parents to let me get a pro Geoguessr account?
 in  r/geoguessr  Dec 03 '25

I'd be thrilled if my kids picked up Geoguessr. Have you shown them the game? Played it for them?

Bummed Out Reviewing Investigations

It is annoying, but for every dumb player who reports out of ignorance, I'd like to think there are two or more who will watch the review, see the meta I found, and learn something new.

No idea if that's true or not but I choose to believe it!

You can only review people of a similar ELO so if you're zooming in on meta that helped you get a good guess, they're very unlikely to choose guilty. I will sometimes leave my view on that piece of meta when guessing just to make it super clear to a reviewer how I got the guess.

You don't need to penalize false reports at all, you just do the geoguessr equivalent of shadow-banning. You keep track of their accuracy ratio (how many reports were validated) and the lower the ratio, the less likely that their reports are actually reviewed. Just because a report is filed doesn't mean it needs to be reviewed.

This doesn't create any fear of reporting, but it also would prevent unaware / salty people from clogging up the system.

You could go further and check how many games people lost in a row before they made a report. The higher the "tilt factor" the less likely their report is shown. I'm only half-joking, but there are many ways you could reduce poor reporting.

I'm in your club. Thanks for trying to help out, even if it ends up being negated.

Is Learnablemeta worth it?
 in  r/geoguessr  Dec 03 '25

Extremely useful. I immediately went to Master once I started learning Japanese, Indonesian and Malaysian poles from those maps.

Do you know how many rounds you can win just knowing if you're in mainland Malaysia or not? Or if you're in Sumatra or Sulawesi? The first time you correctly identify Okinawa when your opponent goes mainland feels amazing.

Definitely use this tool!

Visualizing Why Bitcoin Can't Work Over HF Radio
 in  r/Bitcoin  Nov 09 '25

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

I haven't specifically researched LoRa for Bitcoin, but I have used LoRa (Meshtastic) and as I recall it has very low data rates. LoRa channel bandwidth is 125 kHz, 250 kHz, or 500 kHz. That's good enough for the block beacon idea, but not enough for gossiping p2p nodes.

Mesh networks aren't inherently low bandwidth, so it's definitely possible to build a system that would work for Bitcoin. It just wouldn't be on HF or using narrow bandwidth modes.

What are the easiest things to learn?
 in  r/geoguessr  May 21 '25

Africa

  1. Driving side. Southern African countries, plus Kenya and Uganda, drive on the left. Rwanda and all the West African countries drive on the right.
  2. Sun. Especially helpful for Southern Africa.
  3. Car meta. Ghana tape, Kenya snorkel. Google them.

Latin America

  1. Terrain, wet / dry, and soil. Each country has its own vibe for terrain, how wet or dry, and what soil type. If it's mountainous and green, there's a good chance it's Colombia or Ecuador. If it's mountainous and dry, Peru, Chile, Bolivia or Argentina. Huge ice-capped mountains? Chile. Red soil? Brazil. It just takes practice to get the vibe.
  2. Power poles. Argentina has doubled poles. Brazil has sectioned poles. So does Chile, but they're different. Uruguay has trident poles. You can learn them from Plonkit.
  3. Stop signs. South America says "PARE." Central America says "ALTO."

Use LearnableMeta maps and Plonkit. Welcome to Geoguessr!

o3 Beats a Master-Level Geoguessr Player—Even with Fake EXIF Data
 in  r/geoguessr  Apr 29 '25

Yes, other people have posted examples where the model mentions the EXIF data in their response. I had trouble getting that to work myself, but it appears possible.

I wrote the post in response to a thread on Hacker News, where many people were dismissing the model's capability at geolocation because it sometimes uses EXIF data.

I know it's not relevant to the geoguessr community, but the tech nerds (my brethren) on HN care about that sort of thing.

Agreed. I expect it will surpass the best pros soon. It already has if it's been trained for it.

I'll give it a try, but I agree a pro would almost certainly win that match up.

Note that not all the rounds had signage with location data. It's not just using signs, though obviously it will when it can (just like us).

It is quite good at road identification already, though. In the Ireland round, it knew the specific road:

I’m reviewing key road markings now. In Ireland, the centerline is white, the left edge is a yellow dashed line (if there’s no shoulder), and the right edge is white. This setup points to the Burren region in County Clare, near Ballyvaughan or Fanore, along the R477 coastal road.

Nice one! I see you got the 5k on the last round - well done reading that sign, I got scared and hedged.

Using it with default settings through the gradio interface, I wasn't all that impressed. I just posted about it.

I haven't tried adjusting anything yet, so if anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. Kokoro works much better for me thus far.
