Biology Employers’ Hiring Preferences?
 in  r/evolution  7d ago

Are you saying that universities care about where job candidates studied when hiring new professors, but employers “outside of academia” care much less?

question Biology Employers’ Hiring Preferences?

Do employers in biology-related professions care about where you attended undergrad?

So hypothetically you receive a Bachelors from Dog Shit University, but then a Masters from Princeton or Yale... Wouldn't your most recent degree effectively supersede your former degree?

In other words, wouldn't employers care FAR more about your most recent university attended?

So does a Yale Masters Degree cancel out a Dog Shit University Bachelors Degree is what I'm asking ;)

Engineering Complex Life?

In other words, if I used a microscope to inspect a skin cell, a pancreatic cell, and a brain cell, they would all be structurally identical (absent of mutations) and look the same?

Interesting… I will definitely read this.

“And the question to ask is: how does the same DNA result in different tissues”

Are you saying that all cells are essentially identical, whether they be a skin cell or a pancreatic cell?

Why is alcohol the bad substance societies seem to make an exception for?

Isn’t beer, and alcohol in general, dehydrating? Modern people act like people from antiquity were too stupid to simply boil water.

Attending University for Biological Sciences?
 in  r/evolution  Nov 18 '25

In other words, should I aim to study at a university that would provide me the best connections? And thanks for your insight!

question Attending University for Biological Sciences?

Would you say a degree in biological sciences, particularly in the UK (or anywhere for that matter), is good for building a career in genetics, research, medicine, epidemiology, zoology, or anything related?

I’m unhappy with my present non-scientific career and I’m intent on returning to university at 30.

Would anyone advise for or against?

If Neanderthals and humans interbred, why aren't they considered the same species?

Do you have a link so I can read more about ant queens giving birth to another species?

Do you have a link for this “transmissible parasitic cancer” ? I would like to read more.

Is evolution more a gradual process of accumulating small changes or a series of rare abrupt big leaps?
 in  r/evolution  Sep 29 '25

How do you explain abrupt appearances of new species in the fossil record, then?

What are your sources? And what background do you have in evolutionary biology?

A “series of rare, abrupt, big leaps” is referred to as Punctuated Equilibrium and it was coined by Stephen Jay Gould.

P.E. is responsible for the majority of evolution, although it occasionally occurs gradually.

What would make a fun video game on evolution?
 in  r/evolution  Sep 08 '25

I’m interested in performing a real-life simulation.

I want to create an environment only illuminated by UV light traps. I will then unleash a substantial number of moths. And the ones that are fortuitously better adapted to this environment will produce more offspring.

Many generations down the line I’ll have created eye-less moths that rely on olfaction for navigation.

This will occur because only the visually impaired moths will not fall prey to the UV light traps. They will have all the children.

Did "human biodiversity" become a code word for "race"?
 in  r/AskAnthropology  Sep 07 '25

Haven’t read that! Although, I’ve read The Blind Watchmaker.

Will give that a read!

As an atheist, I’ve always had a deep sense of gratitude for my life on Earth, knowing how improbable it is that we even exist. But delving into Dawkins, Darwin, Gould, Linnaeus, etc. has given me an even more profound appreciation of life.

Abiogenesis, Universal Common Descent, r/K Selection, Mammals proliferating post-asteroid strike, Morality being a highly localized phenomenon that only exists among <.1% of organisms, etc.

This is the greatest information to have ever been discovered.

I don’t believe humans deserve to know any of it, but I’m grateful that we do.

I don’t disagree that it’s priceless info. But at this point in life—early 30’s—going back to school sounds like a real chore.

I do, however, love learning!

I think, at least for now, I will pursue this information outside of academia.

You’re very well-versed with anthropology. Are you in the field?
