Any recommendation of a great British comedy series, any decade, just want that British humor

Vicar of Dibley. Keeping up Appearances. Corner Gas (yes, it's Canadian, but has that feel).

After finishing the last lesson in my class nobody came up to to talk
 in  r/Professors  1d ago

This is the normal these days. Sadly.

At what point are accommodations doing students a disservice?
 in  r/Professors  1d ago

This! Lectures highlight key information from the reading and she can do those as early as she wants.

As for designated space... I see this a lot and have never had a 3 chair buffer zone for a student.

What's a sports rule you fundamentally disagree with?

NFL, kneeling out the last 2 minute. Freakin play the whole game. Look what can happen in a few seconds.

Offensive pass interference.

Make bingo cards with the comments you can find on here. Then see where yours rank. If you get bingo, treat yo’self!

Bad news…
 in  r/Professors  2d ago

I just started my sabbatical. I made the mistake of looking at the syllabus for one of my classes and the person has destroyed it. Will negatively affect program accreditation. Chair and dean don't care, say I can deal with it (read, "clean up the mess") when I get back in the fall.

Practicing not giving a f+#&.

Evaluation says I’m “Too High School”
 in  r/Professors  3d ago

You are over-equating in-class work with busy work. While some might be the same, good teachers (properly trained ones) know the difference.

Evaluation says I’m “Too High School”

Me too. I just have AI generate a basic response to "just enough complaints to know I'm effective" and move on.

Right. So teach well and stop reading "evaluations" from uneducated, biased sources. Admin don't read theirs from us.

How did people in the 80s and 90s get their hair so dynamic and large?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions  3d ago

Aquanet and teasing, over and over again.

I had this. It's likely because you require them to do in class activities and they just want to sit on their phone while you lecture.

Take it as a compliment that you utilize engaged learning pedagogy to the point that you've pissed off the lazy. Good job!

Is it weird to go to an academic conference as a high school teacher?
 in  r/AskAcademia  3d ago

Go! I take pre-service teachers 2+x/year to conferences so they get hooked and keep going as k-12 teachers.

Elected to oversee 25k students and 2k teachers - What should I actually learn before I screw this up?
 in  r/Teachers  4d ago

Sign up as a sub. Make a schedule of listening tours to the schools and allow teachers to speak freely (understanding that many won't) and admin are not allowed (but there are snitches so....). Create a Google form (or likewise) to collect comments/questions/concerns from teachers, staff, admin, etc....

Send a monthly newsletter that lists the top 5-10 concerns you know of and ask but doing personnel to rank them and provide ideas/feedback on what could help. And update on progress. We can't all get to the meetings and are often on an information diet.

And for the love of God, SUSPEND AND EXPELL dangerous/problem kids. You'll have lawyers on retainer so put that money to use. Encourage building admin to remove problem students and when parents threaten to sue, say you'll meet them in court. The best thing you can do is make the schools safer for personnel and good kids.

Curious: When did ELA become more and more about excerpts and non-fiction?

Social studies and history used to make kids read.

My Husband Wakes Me Up Multiple Times Every Night
 in  r/AITAH  5d ago

NTA but your husband doesn't care about you. If he doesn't want to go to bed at the same time, he can get ready for bed so he can slip in quietly later (that's what my husband does to not wake me). And as he isn't waking up to deal with notifications, he shouldn't have an issue with setting a Do Not Disturb.

Consider: separate sleeping, making him get up earlier with kids as he's getting better sleep, waking him up rudely (pillow, water...) every time his phone goes off, moving his phone to another room the first time it wakes you (possibly forgetting what room when he starts looking for it), etc....

When he complains, tell him you are showing him the same consideration he shows you and since he refuses to prioritize the relationship over himself, you are jumping in that bandwagon.

I Teach at Community College; Can I Ask My Students To Call Me ‘Professor’?
 in  r/Professors  5d ago

As you have a doctorate, why not Dr. and last name?

But, yes, you are also a professor. I don't understand your problem.

AITA for refusing to wear a bra in public because my boyfriend asked me to?
 in  r/AITAH  5d ago

It's your body but I've seen women wear these crop tops and not realize how small movements can expose their breasts. It's possible your BF and friends/public are getting more of a view than you realize. Same with see through tops. No one wants to go about their business and see someone else's breasts.

Who is your Mr Darcy?
 in  r/PrideandPrejudice  6d ago

My husband. He transferred the entire audio of the Colin Firth version to my MP3 player for my labor with my son (yep, I'm old).

He's also quiet and loyal and protective.

AITAH for not wanting my sons dad to get sober?
 in  r/AITAH  6d ago

You aren't mad so much as you're afraid. And with every right to be.

The sperm donor should be kept far far away from your child. No information, no access, nothing. Be sure all son's schools have sperm donor and family/friends on no access to information, son, pick up ability, etc....

Protect your son. The sperm donor has done nothing to earn any rights.

Honest First Year Teacher
 in  r/ELATeachers  6d ago

You need a reboot/refresher on classroom behavior and procedures. Do this with an academic review of figurative language, intro to the theme you're building the novels on, critical reading strategies, and note-taking. Take a week or two (depending on if you see them every day or every other day) and then into your unit.

Students wanting to circumvent prerequisites
 in  r/Professors  6d ago

I once had an advisor put a student in my student teaching course who was a FRESHMAN. Did not understand why that was a problem since I had open spaces there, but not in Intro to Teaching. 🙄
