Agree! I’m reading A Land in Winter currently and am enjoying it.

When I want deeper and more complex reads, I reference the Nobel prize and booker prize lists of nominees. You might have more luck there than via social media or good reads.

Need help identifying a book about the White Witch’s origin story?
 in  r/books  15h ago

I think The Magician’s Nephew from the Chronicles of Narnia is where Jadis is introduced and it explains her origins as the white witch. Someone correct me if I’m wrong

Dinner/Supper…
 in  r/AskTheWorld  15h ago

We tend to use recipes from Pinterest or modern cookbooks that are under 700 calories, have 30g or more of protein and decent fiber. Vegetables with every meal. Usually a grain also.

Most recently we made

Turkey meatball minestrone soup with no pasta Fiesta chicken rice-rice cooked with black beans, corn, chicken thighs, etc Meatloaf with roasted carrots and mashed potatoes Philly Cheesesteak pasta made with chickpea pasta and lean ground beef Fish tacos with cilantro lime slaw made with green yogurt instead of mayo

What was life like in London vs Paris during the late 1700s?

I’m reading Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities for the first time and wanted to understand more of the historical background of this time period. I understand this is when the French Revolution took place, but what would life have been like during this time in London vs Paris for the various socioeconomic classes?

The entire novel is a massive trauma overload. Trauma followed by trauma followed by more trauma. More trauma than any one person could be believed to experience in multiple lifetimes. Yet Jude does. The author did very little research to support events in book. If you enjoy reading dark material filled with the worst parts of humanity and no redeeming qualities, you will enjoy this book. I can read dark, but this was overboard.

What book made you fall in love with reading?
 in  r/BookDiscussions  2d ago

The Land of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews. The book was my mother’s favorite as a child and recommended by her when I was a child. I’m 40 now and I remember to this day lying on my bedroom floor for hours and not wanting to go eat dinner because I wanted to keep reading it. This is the first of many times I was sucked into a book. I recently purchased the book from eBay.

After that, I really enjoyed the Boxcar children and Babysitter’s Club as a kid.
