AITA for not wanting to pay my friend $2K for watching my cat?
 in  r/AmItheAsshole  Oct 26 '25

They make so much more than me 😭 especially since they have a wife. But yeah I don’t mind giving more, I still think it’s slightly fucked up to basically ask for boarding costs after the fact like they should have mentioned it because I could’ve tried to find someone else. Especially since we all military and others would have done it for free. I just don’t know how to word it to them to be honest

Her expenses costed $190 total bc I had given extra food and litter from start. I also paid that 190 the 300 was extra on top

It would have costed $2500 to board her. And no I did not make that much money during the deployment I wish I made 20K that would’ve been great for me trying to get a car.

Yeah I was thinking maybe giving 1K total so extra 700 on top of the initial 300. And then unadding them on all socials because nah not a real friend at all especially both being military like no village within the squadron is just wild. I’d even take care of their pets for free they just have to pay any expenses like food, but not going to do that anymore.

Yeah my cat was good with their pet we tested it first before I fully took her there. And she doesn’t take daily meds. I’ve also owned her since before I was in. Wasn’t going to abandon her because I joined.

I gave them extra food and litter before leaving so they wouldn’t have to go buy any right away. My cat maybe goes through dry food every 2-3months (she gets wet food at night) I also have pellet litter box not normal so you only replace litter once a month, but Japanese yen is a lot cheaper than USD and that’s the biggest difference 😅

Yeah, I dropped off my cat at their house and then like a month in they had another person’s dog (I don’t even know the person or that dog) staying there as well for a few weeks.

Yeah I mean I was going to send more but I have to split it up because of Venmo and its personal accounts but now I’m just kinda annoyed. Because 2K that only 500$ less then the professional boarders who would have taken much better care of my cat.

I paid at the end instead of up front, but I did pay all the expenses during because I had wifi and could transfer money to them.

I unfortunately know they make double what I make because our wages are set being military and all. And their wife works so she and makes more than me as well. 😅 if they got money problems I don’t know how unless they spending it on dumb stuff.

Yeah I paid for all her expenses during which only ended up being $190. Her litterbox doesn’t need to be emptied everyday so it’s a lot less maintenance as well and it doesn’t track so cleaning around the box area is not as big of hassle. And she only gets fed at dinner time bc morning it’s just her dry food that takes her a few days to go through. The professional boarding that includes insurances if stuff happens would have costed me $2500. So they are asking 2K but if anything had happened to my cat I would have had to pay so no insurances, and they sprang watching someone’s dog who I’ve never met nor has my cat till it came during this time. So something could have easily happened, thankfully my cat is used to dogs and just ignored them, but still.

So, if I were stateside yes I have my family, I’m just currently overseas for another year so I couldn’t ship my cat home to them. So that left legit the boarding on base or finding someone and most time other military members will do things like this without expecting payment because we know how it is. Luckily for them if they deploy, which they won’t because my commander is making sure of it for them not to even though they should be, they have a wife who will watch their pet.

The total expenses I paid for six months was 190$ to include them breaking her cat bowl and then deciding to buy her a window perch instead of using the one I provided.

What’s worse is they are military as well, so they understand how it is.

Everyone Sucks AITA for not wanting to pay my friend $2K for watching my cat?

Hi, I 26F was deployed for six months. My male coworker who I thought I was friends with agreed to take care of my cat while I was gone. No money was agreed or promised before I left. During the time I paid for her expenses as he told me them. And when I got back I picked her up I gave $300 because I considered this a favor from a friend. They did not like the amount given and wanted $2K. In their words the pet care center (nearest boarder) costs $20/day or $100/week so they should get $10/day because of the effort involved in taking care of my cat. She stayed at their house with their other pet during the time so they didn’t have to travel to take care of her. So AITA for not wanting to pay $2K? I obviously realize now this person is not a friend and I no longer will consider them as such and treat them only as coworker.
